Charlotte POV
After an hour of sitting on my bed and thinking about those yellow eyes I decided that I better get packing my bag. I knew that if dad was sending me to stay with my aunt Lucy, then what ever was going on was serious. A summer in sunny California wouldn’t be the worse place to spend a summer anyways. I could use some relaxation after the school year.
That wolf shook me to my core but for some reason I feel like I should have stood my ground. It shouldn’t have been here that’s for sure, but here was home and I had a strong feeling like I needed to protect it. Protect my family.
I looked at my phone and realized that I had three missed calls from Emma. She would hate this but maybe i could convince Luca to let her come with me for the summer. She was going to Harvard in the fall so this would be the last chance we would get to see each other.
“Sweetie! Oh my god baby are you ok?” My mother bursts into the room shouting. “Your father called me and told me what has happened! I can’t believe I got tied up! Baby! I am so sorry I wasn’t here! How are you doing?” My mom asks a million questions. her waist long blonde hair and blue eyes look frazzled. She is always neatly polished. I think I might even see a wrinkle in her skirt... That is almost completely unheard of... My mom is short, very short. We often tease her that she lives up to the nickname my dad calls her, Kat. I am four inches taller than her but a spitting image of her none the less. The only difference is that I seem to have my dad’s ability to keep calm. I swear my mom can trigger the weather. When she is upset there is always a storm... but, that is always just coincidental.
“MOM! I am ok! I didn’t get hurt and it never attacked. It just chased me. I think it was more curious than anything else. I just can’t believe how fast it got up the cliff. What in the world can run that fast? I also have never seen anything that big!” I pat the edge of the bed beside me to have her come sit beside me.
“Honestly... I am ok. I am shaken up, but I am ok. It was actually a beautiful animal. I want to sketch it... I think... Maybe after a couple days.” I said as I make direct eye contact with her. I wanted her to be reassured I was ok.”
“I was thinking that maybe Emma could come to California with me for the summer or for a few weeks at least. I want to spend some time with her before life gets real in the fall.” I ask with the most pleading eyes I can manage.
My mom looks at we with a frown and then looks like she is slowly contemplating. She sits up straight once she has made a decision and says, “I think that would be something we can arrange sweetie. We will pay for Emma to go as well.” She finishes with a huge smile. “I might come for a week or two if that is, ok?”
She looks at me with the same pleading look I gave her. I sigh and nod my head. I knew that i learnt that look from her. I should have known better then to try it on her.
“Oh great! I am going to go tell your father to go up the credit limit on all the credit cards! I am going to take you guys’ shopping and get both of you a whole new wardrobe for school!” As she is taking, I can see that she is getting excited. Her voice inflects to a high-pitched squeal at the end.
“I will call Luca right now honey. Then you can call Emma and break the news to her once he has agreed.” She says as she is pulling out her phone.
She is almost out the door when she turns around. “Ah... Charlie... maybe leave out the part about the wolf... We don’t want to panic anybody unnecessarily. You father will get the situation under control while we are gone.”
“Ok mom, I think that is for the best. I um... I do want to know what happened to Emma’s parents though. It just seems so weird that no one knows...” I trail off looking at her expression. For a second, I think I see a glimmer of sadness, but it is quickly hidden and she quickly nods and leaves the room without a word.
I am left to pack a bag and I think that I just might wake an itinerary for us as well! A well-planned schedule will ensure we can enjoy the time we have and see all the sites with ample time to relax, and sketch.... that wolf....
My phone rings about 30 minutes later. It seems to pull me out of my daydream about those eyes. It’s Emma. I figure that Luca has told her and that is why she is calling.
I answer my phone to hear Emma screaming inaudible on the other side. I immediately pull my phone away from my ear and burst out laughing. She always had so much energy. I swear that girl would physically bounce off the walls if she could. She was also the fastest girl in school, and with lungs like these its no wonder....
“EMMA!” I shout into the phone. “Emma, if you don’t stop screaming into the phone I will hang up!” I say as I attempt to get her attention.
“Luca says I can go! OMG I am SOOOOOOOOOO excited,” she says again.
I laugh and we discuss the things that we want to do. It pretty much ends with everyday spent on a beach somewhere getting an even darker tan then we already have from grad.
After an hour giggling and planning we both say goodbye to pack our bags. Our flight leaves at 6 am and I need to get a decent sleep if I am going to be able to handle both Emma and my mother in the overly excited states.
I head downstairs to spend some time with my dad. I am not going to see him until i come back to leave again for school. I reach the study that is tucked behind the living room on the main floor. It is my dads “man cave” as he calls it. His domain. I go to knock on the door, but I hear my dad yelling into the phone.
“What do you mean you can’t track him?”
“You mean to tell me that my daughters’ safety is in jeopardy because of your incompetence?”
“No... no I will not calm down; you know full well what’s at stake.
“You get the patrol out and you find that intruder!”
He is really yelling now. I know full well I shouldn’t be listening in, but my curiosity is now peaked. What did he mean by intruder? It was a wolf...They lived here long before we did... We just needed to re-home it somewhere where it wouldn’t be a danger to anyone.
I hear him grumble while he is listening to whoever is on the other end of the call.
“What do you mean we should tell her? The entire point of this is to protect her! It’s not just her life on the line here Jameson. We are all in danger if she isn’t kept safe and hidden.”
There is some shouting on the other line and then I hear my dad slam the phone back in the receiver.
I wait for what seems like forever before knocking on the door. Not giving him a chance to say no I open the door and suddenly, I feel energized. I feel like I am angry and ready to demand I know what the hell is going on.
I look him directly in the eyes. I see he is still steaming mad, but I don’t care. “What the hell dad... Why do I need to be safe and hidden?”
My words register with him, and the rage leaves his face. He softens his stance and comes around his mahogany desk to lean against the front.
“Charlotte, sit down... we need to have a long talk and you’re not going to like me after,” he states without any emotion. I have never seen him like this before. He has never spoken to me like that. The coldness in his tone almost hurts me so much that I feel like crying.
I take one step and we suddenly hear a huge bang followed by what sounded like someone falling down the stairs.
We both run to the stairs but its to late...
My mother is laying at the bottom with a pool of blood growing underneath her.
