Katrina POV
I am just carrying our bags out of Charlottes room when I hear Charlotte yelling at Zane. She has never done that before, and I decide to race down the stairs. I reach the top landing and feel someone push me from behind. I fall for what left like an eternity to hit the first set of stairs with my left shoulder, face and wrist. I bounce off and continue the descent. The second time I hit the stairs at about the middle of the staircase. This time I feel a sharp pain in my right hip and my lower back and then the world goes black.
I feel like I am dreaming, the pain disappears, and I feel content. I seem to drift off into a memory.
“Luna, your daughter is very gifted. She is part of a prophecy that has not been talked about by our elders for centuries. The Moon goddess told the first of our ancestors that a child born of wolf and of witch would be born and she would hold the key to saving and protecting all creatures that walk the earth. She is to be the salvation for creature and human life.” The Elder wolf Xavier said as he told Zane and myself about why our child has been having abilities that are unexplainable.
“It is said that she will need to be protected at all costs. Many will try to use her gifts for their own selfish gains. She will also be tested through out her entire life. She must always choose the correct path, or her destiny will alter the fate of all creatures,” he finished.
“What does this mean for our pack?” Zane asks as I see him getting protective of our little girl.
The night before we walked into her nursery to see all her belongings floating in the air. the furniture stayed fixed to the floor but all the pictures, teddy bears, and toys were floating suspended in air as she continued to sleep soundly.
We woke her up and the items all crashed to the floor. That ability is something that takes witches quite a few years to learn. I was seventeen before I could have complete control over an item, she was two...
When she reached up tp place her little hand on his face he said that he suddenly felt compelled to feed her. It was beyond the normal feeling of taking care of your child. He said that there was no way he would have been able to resist it.
The troubling part of this is that Alfa wolves are not able to be controlled. They are the Alpha and they can make other wolves listen to their command, but they can not be compelled by other wolves or any other creature. Witches and Vampires are able to use compulsion as their ability but there is always a delicate balance of abilities to keep an acceptable population of all creatures. Humans are the weakest link to the earth, but it is understood amongst all societies that humans are to be protected. No creature can live without the existence of humans.
Charlotte had already exhibited her athletic talents that come from her Alfa bloodline. We had hoped that she would get the genetic lottery for the wolf with the dominant Alfa traits in Zane’s bloodline. However, she was showing us that she had dominant genes from both Zane as well as myself.
I then drift into another memory... the one that decided Charlotte’s fate forever...
We meant during a war between Zane’s pack when his father, Evander was the Alfa. It was all over the Blood Moon pack trying to expand their territory. The expansion meant that the Convens’ territory would be surrounded by the Blood Moon Territory and that would leave us vulnerable to the possibility of attack from the pack should they choose to expand. The leaders of both groups had attempted to reach a civil agreement but when none could be reached a war started.
I was the daughter of the head witch, Aries. She is the strongest witch and much like the Alfa has the sole responsibility of protecting the coven.
Both leaders felt the loss of many casualties as the war raged for over a year. As my group ran through the woods one night to get away from the wolves I ran straight into a massive pure black wolf with green eyes. They seemed to glow in the dark as the rest of him was only visible by the slivers of moonlight peaking through the branches.
I had been thrown to the ground by the impact and I now stayed there. Both of us holding our breathe waiting for the other to make a move.
“Mate,” the wolf said.
I looked at him in shock. There is no way in hell I was the mate of a mutt! These dogs stink and we haven’t known anything but pain from these animals, they knew nothing but war and brute force.
“I am NOT YOUR MATE,” I hissed. I watched how those neon green eyes looked hurt and then angry. The wolf leaped overtop of me and seemed to grow in size as it growled and snapped at the other wolves that had finally caught up to our position. They snapped back until the black wolf swiped out at one. They all then bowed to the black wolf. I knew this was a highly ranked wolf by its sheer size, but the other wolves just confirmed it.
They believe a mate is their Moon Goddess telling them that this is their soul mate. It is believed in our coven that only blessed witches of white magic will ever get to meet their “true one” as we called them.
It took almost another month of both sides losing battles before we were finally able to convince our leaders to accept each other as well as our love. We caught for each other and for the other side. We now have one of the strongest bonds between the two societies. Both are strong and regularly meetings are held to protect both equally from any threats.
This little girl we created was now in danger and we had to protect her with our lives, while teaching her write from wrong. One choice could change her life forever.
It didn’t take long for another pack to find out about her and the prophecy. They attacked relentlessly and we were forced into hiding to protect all creatures.
I was thinking about that night I first ran into Zane when I felt myself slipping. I knew he would protect our baby. He would keep her safe. He knew what he had to do next...
We had many late nights creating a plan. I didn’t know if I would be there for my baby any longer but I knew he would stop at nothing to guide her. I loved them both dearly. I hope he realizes our home was no longer safe.... someone was in our home, and they were willing to kill.
