Chapter 5 - The Intruder

Charlotte POV    I saw her there. At the bottom of the stairs. I could tell she was struggling to breathe by how hard the muscles in her neck were working. But the blood was everywhere. There was a huge gash on her forehead and a bone was protruding from her leg.    I stopped in my tracks and felt that same feeling I felt earlier... shock. I was frozen there.    My dad rushed by yelling her name. Trying to get her to wake up. He quickly ripped the sleeve off his dress shirt and tied it around her thigh as a tourniquet. He was saying something to me but all I saw was the red blood on the marble floors. I couldn’t hear anything. I just stood there.    “CHARLOTTE!” He screamed at me this time. Tears were streaking down his face. “I need you to focus. I need you to call Luca right now! We don’t have any time to waste.”    Doing what he said I pulled my phone out of my pocket and filled Luca in on what had happened when he answered.    Without hesitation he had Emma and himself on the way. It had been years since I had known my dad to talk yet alone talk to Luca. Whatever had happened was something my father held a grudge for years.    “Dad, shouldn’t I be calling 9-1-1? What is Luca going to do?” I asked. I could feel the panic setting in. It looked like the tourniquet had managed to stop the bleeding for right now, but she still looked lifeless. Pale as she was, I could still see her struggling to breathe. At least she was breathing.    “Charlie... there is going to be a lot of things that you’re going to find out about us and yourself very shortly. I need you to tell me that you understand we did everything for your safety” he looked up from my mother and made direct eye contact with me. There was fear there in his eyes.    “What are you talking about? What could be worse than this” I asked? This time I felt furious. What in the hell had they been keeping from me?    “Your mother is a witch. She is a high-born and that means she will heal from this, but she will heal in a couple days instead of months like a human.” He quickly glanced my way after talking to see my reaction.    I looked at him ready to yell. How in the hell would he think it’s funny to make up some nonsense right now? In what world did he think that was ok?    Just as I was about to speak, I looked at my mother and noticed her breathing had eased and the cut on her forehead now looked like a scar. The bruising was completely gone.    “Charlotte, I am a wolf and I need you to understand that what I am about to do is going to help your mother. We are mates and if I bite her mark she will heal faster,” he said as he then held eye contact with me this time.    I watched in horror as my own father moved the strap of my mother’s tank top from her shoulder exposing a scar that she said was from a dog bite when she was young. He gently caressed her head supporting her as he lowered his face closer. Just as he got to the scar, he opened his mouth and exposed fangs where his previous “normal” teach had been. They grew to about 2 inches long. I continued to watch as he sunk his teeth into my mothers’ shoulder and neck penetrating her skin. His eyes turned black, and he waited for half a minute before releasing his jaw from her neck.    I looked at him in disbelief. What was going on? Had my father just bit my mother? Why would his teeth magically grow?    A million questions flooded my brain as I became over-whelmed. I looked down at my mother’s face again and seen her eyes flutter. She was waking up already...    I moved to sit on the first step of the stairs so that I could support her head.  The scar ran from the center of her forehead to the apex of her left brow. But it was now a faint pink line now.    I was still numb from what I had just seen but found myself becoming calm. I felt a sense of relief came over me when I realized that her leg had begun to heal. It was much slower than her forehead, but it was still healing.    “Well... isn’t this a beautiful family reunion,” A deep husky voice came from up the stairs. I felt a chill run through my body.    I slowly turned my body to see a dark figure at the top. The lights shone around him and made his face shadowed. I couldn’t make out any clear structure to his face. He was dressed in all black. A black long coat hung down to his ankles.    “Oh, come on Charlotte.... you don’t remember me? I am your uncle Alias.” His voice was steely and cold. I instantly felt like I was in danger.   “Alias, what are you doing here?” My father asked. His tone was defensive, and I knew my initial feelings were correct. He moved from my mothers’ side and used his arm to push me behind him. I could feel rage almost pulsing from him.    “Imagine my surprise when I thought my dear sister and her husband had managed to live through the war. We were told that you as well as your sweet little girl had been attacked and died. It was a beautiful service for the three of you.” He said back making a hissing sound as he spoke.    He moved a step down and I heard a growl erupt from my dad’s chest. I took a step back and realized that I was not only scared of the man descending the steps, but I was also fearful of my father. Everything about this situation was a nightmare. I didn’t recognize any of the people in front of me... whether they had raised me.    The man moved into the light from the entry way. He had a chiseled jaw line. Skin that was so pale that it looked like he had never seen the light of day. His eyes were red. I had never seen anything like that before. Why were they red?    Alias had slowly made his way down to the center of the stairs now. He slowly lifted his hands to show he wasn’t a threat. I noticed that his eye seemed to start to glow. They reminded me of a stop light shining vibrantly against his pale skin.    “That’s fair enough Alias.” My dad said with a deep and commanding voice. He seemed to be fixated on every move Alias was making. Almost like he was carefully calculating a defense to every move Alias made.    Alias looked straight past my father and made direct eye contact with me, “Now... my lovely niece, you and I have some catching up to do. It seems here that your father and mother have kept a lot of things from you. You have no idea what your capable of young lady. i can show you everything you want to know. They have lied and manipulated you long enough my dear. It’s time for you to come home and meet your family.”    “You tried to kill her!” My dad roared. I could hear popping bones in my dads back. It looked like his entire spine was rearranging. His dress shirt stretched and started to rip at the seams. His face started to change shape and his nose transformed into a snout. The horrendous popping sound stopped, and I looked up at a huge silver wolf. He towered over top of me and moved so that he was positioned directly over top of my mother body.    The wolf turned his head to look at me. I recognized my fathers’ eyes and knew that I was ok. Just as I looked up, I saw Alias move down the rest of the stairs in a blur. The wolf’s head whipped back, and his snarling teeth were mere inches from Alias’s face. The huge rumble from the wolf blew the hood off Alias’s head. I could see the resemblance to my mother now. Alias smiled revealing fangs and his own wicked snarl.    “You know... my sister doesn’t bounce back like she used to when we were young. You would think she would have noticed me upstairs waiting for your little girl, and we both know that if I wanted to kill her I would have been more.... lethal.” He hissed every word again. Clearly trying to get under my fathers’ skin and I could tell it was working. My father snapped his teeth at Alias.    Alias moved back just in time to dodge the bite. He seemed unphased and proud that he had pushed my father so far.    “You were in our house? You did this to Katrina?” The wolf said with a voice so deep and powerful the sound resonated in our entry way.    I felt a feeling of anger rip through me. It was powerful. I could feel a tingling start in my chest and slowly make its way down my arms until my fingertips felt every pulse. I felt the feeling grow until I felt like I was going to explode. All I could see was Alias and his cruel smirk. He was watching my father and not paying any attention to me. They were in a stand-off waiting for the other to make a move.    I was so focused that I wasn’t paying attention to my father’s voice in my head. “Charlotte its me. It’s your dad. I am mind linking you. It is something wolves can do. I need you to calm down. You are very powerful, and I can feel you accessing it. You don’t know how to use it yet and it could kill all of us if you loose control.”    My focus stayed on Alias, but I saw my mothers’ fingertips move underneath my father. She was waking up.    The feeling in my fingers felt like it was starting to burn. I needed to release this feeling. It was building and I knew then it was already too late to stop it.    I focused and used what I had left to focus on my father. Maybe I could mind-link him back.    “Dad, I can’t stop it. it is too strong. My fingers are burning. I don’t want to hurt anyone.”    “It’s ok baby. I am going to move your mother out of the way. You’re going to put all your focus on Alias. Hold your hand up and face your palm in his direction. Just focus on him. He pushed your mother down the stairs. She has mind linked me. She is ok but she is very hurt.” His voice was calming and seemed to help me focus on the feeling I had. My hands were shaking now, my fingertips felt like pins and needles.    “NOW!” I shouted. My father ducked and slid my mother to the center of the room with him away from the stairs.     I simultaneously lifted my hand and let go. I released the power and the air rippled as the impact hit Alias. He flew back into the stairs and was pinned there as I held my hand up towards him. He was struggling to breathe under the pressure I had on his body.    A look of panic crossed his face. His eyes contacted mine, and he seemed to be pleading as he continued to struggle free.    I knew what I had to do. I held right hand up towards the chandelier on closed my fingers to my palm. The chandelier began to chime as it broke free from the ceiling. I could feel the energy surging through my body.    Looking straight into alias’s panicked face I moved the suspended chandelier over top of Alias. He looked at me and began to plead.   “You don’t know what you are doing Charlotte. If you kill me, you will never be able to let it go.  This is what they want. Your parents want to keep you for themselves. They want all your power here where they can use it.”    “I may not know what is going on, but I know you put my mother’s life in danger, and I can tell that you are not someone that I should have anything to do with. I don’t even know who you are!” I screamed this time. My head had started to pound, and I could tell the power was draining. I felt my strength wavering.   Luca burst through the door with a loud bang as the door shattered. The bang broke my focus and the chandelier fell. It shattered into a million pieces as it hit the stairs. The metal framing now rested embedded into Alias’s body. Black blood began to drip from his mouth.    “You little b***h!”   He hissed. “Your to late anyways. I have already told the faction where you are. They are almost here! You are going to lose everything you ever loved little girl. They are going to suck every single drop of blood from you and obtain your powers for themselves.” He barely finished before I saw my father launch forward and the huge jaws came down on Alias’s head. He crushed the head and then tore it from the rest of the body.    The wolf huffed and began to shutter. There was blood dripping from his mouth. He looked in my direction and I saw shame flicker through the eyes before they landed on Luca.    A growl ripped through the room. “Luca... get her out of here now. Get her to the safe room. I have a fight coming and she needs to be safe. You are to protect her with your life.” My dads’ words seemed to command Luca without a word he grabbed my arm to lead me past my mothers’ body to the bookshelf nestled in between the stairs. He pushed a book and the bookshelf opened like a door.    “What is going on!” I cried.    My mother made eye contact with me as she woke up. She was still so weak, but I knew that i had to go with Luca. She created a small smile and nodded her head to urge me in.    I knew that my world had just changed but I still had no answers. Only more questions. I felt a sting in my arm and looked at Luca to see him holding a needle full of something silver. I felt myself slip into a deep slumber. He picked my up and carried me in. I felt a small hand grab mine and I knew it was Emma. I could feel her reassuring nature. Then the feeling took over and I was out cold.
