Chapter 6 - The Protector

1909 Words
Lucas' POV We were now in the panic suite that the house was built over. It is about 2000 square feet. It is designed much the same as their house above with marble tiling and chunky leather couches with a large oak table and a full kitchen. It is separately powered by hydro-energy in an underground cavern that Zanes' seismic team found when they surveyed the land to build. There is a cooler and cold room with enough food to sustain 10 people for three years. With just three of us we could easily be well sustained for years. Our wolves would go crazy before we starved. Zane and Kathrine had built a state of the art gym in it but working out was not the same as letting your wolf out to run and hunt. Eventually our wolves would go insane, we would either be feral and destroy one another or we would be let out before that happened. It was closed and locked. There is no way out unless Katrina or Zane let us out. The only reason Zane agreed to me being part of this emergency plan was because Kat had made him accept it. Differences set aside, they both knew that I would protect her with my life. There is one more person that has the ability to let us out but only Kat knows who that is. She wouldn't even tell Zane.  I watched from the bar stool at the kitchen counter as Emma tended to Charlotte while the silver wore off. Charlotte was what we call a blessed wolf. Silver would kill a wolf of a lower rank. As you moved up through the ranks to more potent bloodlines it would range from death to severe discomfort to a mild sedative. Her father has been adding colloidal silver to her coffee creamer for years to make sure her body could build up a tolerance. We didn't know what her tolerance level would be with her only being a half-blood so he had to make sure. Zane had grown her tolerance stronger then that of his own just in case any unfriendly intentions came her way. His love for her went deeper then anything I have ever seen before, but I don't know if she will see past the lies.  Zane hated every part of me for past decisions, he only let me live because he knew that every decision was made for their protection. Specifically, Charlottes protection. He will hopefully forgive me eventually. It has been hell not having my best friend. We grew up together. We trained together and when it became time for Zane to take his fathers place as Alpha, we became leaders together. He made me his Beta and I vowed to protect the pack, him, and the family he created years later. I made the hardest choice I have ever made but he only sees what he lost and that I took it away from him. Emma used a cold cloth to dab Charlottes forehead. The events of the day had been to much and the silver was not wearing off as fast as it should have been because of her exhaustion. I had laid her down on the black chaise in the living area. It was more like a panic mansion, but her parents didn't want to spare any expense on her protection. The above house could completely burn down but no one could get to her here. This would be her own person prison, but it was all to keep her alive. I know that she will eventually understand that. In the meantime I can train her to be one of the strongest wolves alive. Once we get out of here I will take her to her mothers coven to learn to control her powers.  "Charlie?" Emma softly spoke to Charlotte. "I can see your waking up. You don't need to be scared. We know what is going on and we can help you. You just have to give us the opportunity to explain it all before you freak out."  Charlottes' eyes slowly fluttered opened. The bright lights burned her eyes as she slammed them closed again. She attempted it again making sure she didn't look directly into the light this time. I stayed back out of view so that she hopefully recognized Emma and found comfort in her.   "Charlie... We have a lot of explaining to do," I spoke softly as I moved slowly around the black leather couch she was on to get into view. "Both Emma and I are werewolves, you are one too sweetie. Well... half of one, as you saw earlier you father is one. Your mother is an immensely powerful witch. She will be ok, but she is very hurt, and she needs time to heal. You have her powers as well. You are a very powerful creature. The first of your kind... Actually you're the first hybrid. We are here to answer any questions you may have."  I looked at her waiting for the tears, the screams, anything... but it never came. She just looked back and forth between Emma and Myself. Calm.  "So... my entire life has been a complete lie." She gave us a cold and steely tone as any softness that as once in her eyes disappeared. "First of all, If you EEVVEERR think to inject me with anything ever again, think twice. Secondly, you both better start explaining. Like NOW."  She sat up slowly and Emma backed up to sit on the arm of the couch across from Charlotte. Emma pulled out a book from her bag and slowly moved back to Charlotte, careful to make unthreatening movements.  "Char, this book has everything you need to know. Your mom wrote it for you about a year back because she knew it wasn't going to be long before you found out." Handing the leather-bound notebook to Charlotte she then stepped back again.  I watched the exchange. Charlotte was holding back a lot of anger and resentment, her shoulders were tense. That is not healthy for a wolf to do. While we pride ourselves on being in efficient control of our emotions, we have to learn to handle them at a very young age. Charlotte never had any of that, and now that she won't be having any silver in her coffees anymore everything will hit her ten times harder. Emotions, transitions to her wolf, increased senses, body temperature, and strength are all going to hit her all with in the next 24 hrs. This is when she will be the weakest and the most dangerous, unable to control everything. We have been tasked to support and train her through this.  "Charlie... your need to take some deep breaths. Your eyes are turning violet. Your wolf is trying to come forward. You're not ready for that yet. You need to think about your human body. Think about your legs, arms, and hands." Emma held one hand up ready to brace if Charlotte lost control. Emma's red hair started to thicken and lengthen as she mentally prepared her own wolf to be ready. Her fingers transitioned into claws and she backed behind the couch. Waiting. She was giving herself enough room to respond if Charlotte changed.  I stepped forward in between them. Charlotte may be a high-ranking member, but her wolf should still submit to me as the Beta if she hasn't completely disconnected from us and her family. Her eyes were almost neon violet. I have never seen a wolf with that eye color but none of us will ever know the full extent of what Charlotte is for years to come.  "Charlotte... take control of your wolf NOW!" I yell at her this time. Enough trying to be understanding. There isn't time to let her decide anymore. This is getting to dangerous for her. Its beyond dangerous for Emma and I to be around her now. We are literally locked into a steel and concrete box with no where to go. If she loses control, she could kill us.  I watch as her shakes her head trying to gain control, her eyes slowly fade into the blue we are all accustomed to. The tension releases from her face and shoulders and she looks around completely disorientated. She takes one look at me and lunges off the couch into my arms.  "Please help me. I can't do this on my own, I don't know what is happening." She cries into my chest as I pull her tighter into my chest. Her sobs shake me to my core as my heart breaks for my niece. Whether or not we have the same blood running through us she is family. I won't let her forget that.  "I've got you Charlie. I will protect you, we are going to help you but first I want you to just let it all out right now. You tell us when you are ready." I continue to support her as Emma comes up and I open up for her to join Charlotte. The girls soon release me and hug each other.  After a few minutes Charlottes' sobs begin to slow and become hitched breathes. She turns back to me with swollen red eyes and trails of where tears have been running. "OK... I think I am ready. Tell me everything. No more lies." Her face sets into a determined look as I see the strength we knew she had return.  "Ok. Let's sit down and go through the book page by page. We can stop when you need to take a break or have questions." I nod taking a seat on the couch waiting for the girls to join each other on the opposite one.  It took four hours but we eventually caught Charlotte up on everything we knew. It unfortunately left more questions then answers again. We had no more information then the book about her powers. All we could do was train her for what was about to come. I could tell she was in complete shock, but she was so exhausted that she needed to rest before she could come to terms with everything.  She was able to start connecting the dots that both her and Emma could run so fast because of their increased stamina and strength from their wolves. She tried to mind-link both Emma and I but it was faint from the silver still in her system. She asked me to link Zane and ask about her mother but Zane must have taken Kat to another safe house. It was out of range for our abilities. If there was more coming they would have had to disappear fast and lead them away from us down here so they didn't just camp out upstairs and wait for someone to come here.  I hope we have done the right thing. I hate sitting here just waiting. Those that say "good things come to those who wait" were clearly never involved in a pending war. She doesn't understand the prophecy but neither do we. All I could tell her is that when an important decision comes she will know in her heart what the right thing to do is.  None of us knew that these decisions would already start with in the next week. I guess we are fools for thinking we had more time before fate created her destiny.
