My baby sister Poppy was my absolute pride and joy but my mum was sick that winter and didn’t recover and she passed away. I was devastated but I had to stay strong for Poppy. She was only a baby and I took on the role of a parent to her. Before I knew it four years had passed and we were able to walk around freely but the woman in the town were still suspicious of all men. We had became like second class citizens and I couldn’t blame them for what we had put them through. The queen still supplied food to us all but the men in the town took the scraps. The shame of what we had done stuck with all of us even if we couldn’t remember exactly what we had done. The queen lived in Sutton Manor and she was ruthless but incredibly kind to all the woman and children. All men knew never to go near the fields or woods surrounding Sutton Manor because we knew we would never be seen again. After a while the town felt like a community. The queen sent word that she wanted us to appoint a leader and that there was lots of little communities springing up around that area. She said that they would have meetings to discuss anything that we needed. Of course she said that the leader must be a woman and that no men were to enter Sutton Manor. There was around a hundred of us in the town and we all voted that Margaret the towns doctor should be the leader. Margaret would go to meetings every now and then and report back to us everything that was discussed. One day I asked Margaret what the queen was like and she said she was the scariest b***h on two legs with the biggest heart. She said she was beautiful and that she was surrounded by a group of beautiful woman. Margaret said that during those awful times that the queen and her gang would travel through the streets of Dublin in a bus with the windows open so that packs of men would follow them and that they would slit their throats and find woman and children and take them back to Sutton Manor to look after them. This woman terrified me and I really hoped that I would never have to meet her.
