whispers between Aisles
Chapter 1
The Man Who Stole Her Eyes
Gwanda had never been the kind of girl who noticed men.
While her friends whispered about crushes and love stories, she had always been different. Romance had never pulled her heart the way it seemed to pull everyone else’s. To her, love was just something people talked about in songs and movies.
Until that day.
The wedding hall was glowing with warm lights and soft music. White roses decorated every corner, and laughter filled the air as family and friends gathered to celebrate the marriage of Nicole’s Aunt Lydia.
Gwanda sat quietly beside her best friend, Nicole, watching the guests walk down the aisle.
But then her eyes stopped.
Standing beside the bride was a man she had never seen before.
He was tall, calm, and confident. His dark suit fit him perfectly. When he smiled politely at the guests, something about him felt different. Not loud or attention-seeking like other men. Just quietly powerful.
Without meaning to, Gwanda kept looking at him.
And then it happened.
As he lifted the microphone to give his speech, his eyes briefly moved across the room and met hers.
For a second, the world around Gwanda seemed to disappear.
Her heart beat faster than it ever had before.
Confused, she leaned closer to Nicole and whispered quietly.
“Nicole, who is that man standing beside Aunt Lydia?”
Nicole glanced at him and smiled.
“Oh, that’s Uncle Zack.”
Gwanda frowned slightly.
“Uncle Zack?”
Nicole nodded.
“Yes. He’s my mom’s younger brother. There are three of them in the family. My mom, Aunt Lydia, and him. He’s the last born.”
Gwanda looked back at him again as Zack continued speaking to the guests. His deep voice was calm and steady as he congratulated the couple.
Something about the way he spoke made people listen carefully.
Gwanda could not explain why, but she could not stop watching him.
After a moment, she leaned closer to Nicole again.
“How come I’ve never seen him before?”
Nicole laughed softly.
“That’s because he doesn’t live here. He lives in Chicago.”
“Chicago?” Gwanda repeated, surprised.
“Yes,” Nicole said. “That’s where his company is. He only comes here during holidays or when the family has something important. Like this wedding.”
Gwanda’s eyes slowly moved back to Zack.
“So when the holidays are over…” she murmured quietly.
Nicole finished the sentence.
“He goes back again.”
For some reason, those words made Gwanda’s chest feel strangely heavy.
She had only seen him for a few minutes.
Yet the thought of him leaving already made her feel something she could not explain.
As Zack finished his speech, the room filled with applause.
But Gwanda barely noticed the clapping around her.
Because deep inside, she felt something new beginning.
Something dangerous.
Something beautiful.
And she did not know it yet, but the man standing beside the bride was about to change her life forever.
