Chapter 21: The Voice in the Dark Rose looked. The whisper had come from directly behind her. “Your father is alive.” She turned quickly. No one was there. “Alexander?” “I’m here.” He reached for her hand. His father stood near the doorway, looking toward the dark hallway. “Everyone stay together,” he said. The lights flickered back on. Rose looked around the room. “Who said that?” Alexander's father didn't answer. Then there was another knock. This time, Alexander walked toward the door. His father grabbed his arm. “Wait.” “Dad, if that's Daniel—” “It isn't.” “How do you know?” His father looked toward the window. “Because Daniel is standing outside.” Alexander frowned. They looked through the window. Daniel was indeed outside the front door. He raised his hands. “I didn't do anything!” Alexander opened the door. Daniel stepped inside. “What happened?” he asked. Alexander stared at him. “You tell me.” Daniel looked confused. “I came because I found something.” “What?” Daniel pulled a small envelope from his jacket. “Your father's old lawyer gave me this.” Alexander took it. Rose stepped closer. “Is it about my father?” Daniel nodded. “I think so.” Alexander opened the envelope. Inside was a photograph. Rose looked at it. Her heart stopped. It was her father. But the photograph wasn't old. There was a date printed beneath it. Six months ago. Rose stared at Alexander. “He's alive.” Alexander nodded slowly. His father closed his eyes. Daniel looked at him. “You knew, didn't you?” Alexander's father remained silent. Rose turned toward him. “You knew my father was alive?” He finally looked at her. “Yes.” Rose's voice shook with anger. “Why didn't you tell me?” “Because he asked me not to.” “Why?” “Because he was still being watched.” Daniel stepped forward. “By the same person who has been watching Rose.” Alexander looked at him. “Do you know who it is?” Daniel shook his head. “Not yet.” Then the phone on the table rang. Everyone became silent. Alexander answered. “Hello?” No one spoke. Then a familiar voice came through. Rose's eyes widened. She knew that voice. “Dad?” There was silence. Then the voice answered. “Rose.” She covered her mouth. Tears filled her eyes. “Where are you?” “I can't tell you.” “Why?” “Because you're in danger.” Alexander took the phone. “Who is threatening you?” Her father paused. Then he said, “Alexander, you need to listen carefully.” Alexander's expression became serious. “What?” “Your father didn't create the wedding contract.” Alexander froze. Rose looked at him. “Then who did?” Her father whispered, “Someone who wanted you two together.” The call suddenly ended. Everyone stared at the phone. Rose slowly turned toward Alexander. “Who would want us together?” No one answered. Then Daniel looked at the contract on the table. “There is only one way to find out.” Alexander picked it up. “We find the person who wrote the original version.” And for the first time, Rose realized something terrifying. Their marriage had never been a coincidence. Someone had brought them together for a reason. And they were finally getting close to discovering who.
