Chapter 16: The Unexpected Truth

The door opened slowly.

Rose held her breath.

Alexander stood between her and the doorway.

Then someone stepped inside.

It was Daniel.

Rose stared at him.

“You?”

Daniel looked at Alexander.

“You shouldn't have come here.”

Alexander's voice was cold.

“You left us a message.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

Daniel glanced at Rose.

“Because she deserves to know the truth.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“Then start talking.”

Daniel sighed.

“The contract wasn't originally written for Rose.”

Rose's eyes widened.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Your name was added later.”

Alexander turned toward him.

“Who added it?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Your father.”

Alexander smile.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Rose looked confused.

“Why would his father put my name in the contract?”

Daniel placed a second folder on the desk.

“Because three years ago, your family was connected to the company investigation.”

Rose shook her head.

“My family?”

“Your father worked with Alexander's company.”

Rose stared at him.

“My father never told me that.”

“He didn't want you involved.”

Alexander opened the folder.

Inside were old company records and photographs.

One photograph showed Rose's father standing beside Alexander's father.

Rose slowly picked it up.

“I've never seen this.”

Daniel nodded.

“There was a disagreement between them. After that, several company records disappeared.”

Alexander looked through the documents.

“And Daniel?”

“I was blamed for everything,” Daniel said. “But I wasn't the one who took the records.”

“Then who did?”

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“That's what I've been trying to find out.”

Suddenly, footsteps echoed outside.

Daniel immediately became alert.

“We need to leave.”

Alexander closed the folder.

“Why?”

“Because whoever sent those messages knows we're here.”

Rose looked frightened.

“Who is it?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

They hurried toward the exit.

But before they reached the door, Rose noticed something on the desk.

A small note.

She picked it up.

There were only six words written on it:

“Ask Rose what her father knew.”

Rose stared at the message.

Alexander looked at her.

“What does it mean?”

“I don't know.”

But deep inside, Rose realized something.

Her father had kept secrets from her.

And those secrets might explain why Alexander had chosen her for the contract in the first place.

She looked at Alexander.

“Did you know about my family before you asked me to marry you?”

Alexander didn't answer.

Rose's expression changed.

“Alexander?”

He finally spoke.

“I knew your surname.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

Silence.

Rose took a step back.

“You knew.”

Alexander lowered his eyes.

“I didn't know everything.”

“But you knew something.”

“Yes.”

Rose felt betrayed.

“So the wedding contract wasn't a coincidence.”

Alexander looked at her.

“No.”

The room fell silent.

For the first time, Rose wondered whether she had entered the marriage because Alexander needed a wife—or because he needed her.
