Chapter 12: Three Years Ago Rose stood in the living room, waiting. Alexander had been silent for almost a minute. “What happened three years ago?” she asked again. Alexander looked away. “It was complicated.” Rose sighed. “That is not an answer.” He walked toward the window. “Three years ago, Daniel worked for my company.” “And?” “He betrayed me.” Rose frowned. “How?” “Money disappeared from one of our accounts. Important information was leaked, and I was blamed for it.” Rose stared at him. “You were blamed?” “Yes.” “What did Daniel have to do with it?” Alexander turned around. “He was the person who knew the most about what happened.” Rose crossed her arms. “So you believe he did it?” “I know he was involved.” “Then why is he back?” Alexander's expression hardened. “I don't know.” Rose studied him. “You're hiding something else.” Alexander didn't answer. She shook her head. “You keep saying this marriage is based on trust, but you won't trust me with the truth.” “That isn't fair.” “Then tell me.” Silence. Finally, Alexander said quietly, “Daniel wasn't the only person involved.” Rose's eyes widened. “Who else?” “My business partner.” “And what happened to him?” “He disappeared after the investigation began.” Rose stared at Alexander. “Is he still alive?” “I don't know.” The room became silent. Rose slowly sat down. “This is much bigger than I thought.” Alexander nodded. “That is why I didn't want you involved.” “But I'm already involved.” He looked at her. “How?” “Because I'm your wife.” Alexander's expression softened. “Rose…” She stood. “I don't need you to protect me from every problem. I need you to tell me the truth.” Alexander took a slow breath. “Okay.” He reached for the folder on the table. “There is something else you need to know.” Rose looked at the folder. “What?” Alexander opened it. Inside was a photograph. Rose picked it up. Her face changed immediately. She knew the person in the photograph. “That's…” Alexander watched her carefully. “You know him?” Rose couldn't speak. The photograph showed Daniel standing beside a man Rose had seen before. A man she had never expected to see connected to Alexander's past. She slowly looked up. “Alexander…” “Yes?” “I think I've seen this man before.” His expression became serious. “Where?” Rose swallowed. “At my old workplace.” Alexander stopped. “Are you sure?” “Yes.” He took the photograph from her. Suddenly, the mystery of three years ago had become much closer to home. And neither of them knew that the next person to walk through their door would have even more answers. Someone who knew exactly what happened three years ago.
