Chapter 13: The Missing Piece
Rose couldn't sleep.
The photograph Alexander had shown her kept replaying in her mind.
The man in the picture.
She had seen him before.
But where?
She sat on the edge of her bed, trying to remember.
Then suddenly, it came to her.
“The office…”
She remembered seeing him at her old workplace several times.
But why had he been there?
The next morning, Rose went downstairs.
Alexander was already in the living room, speaking on the phone.
“I need the records from three years ago,” he said. “Everything.”
He ended the call when he noticed Rose.
“You're awake early.”
“I remembered something.”
Alexander immediately became serious.
“About the photograph?”
Rose nodded.
“I saw that man at my old workplace.”
“Do you remember his name?”
“No.”
“Do you remember what he was doing there?”
“He used to meet someone in the back office.”
“Who?”
Rose shook her head.
“I never knew.”
Alexander walked toward her.
“Rose, this could be important.”
“I know.”
His phone rang.
He answered.
“Hello?”
His expression changed.
“What?”
Rose watched him carefully.
“Where are you?”
A pause.
“Stay there. I'm coming.”
He ended the call.
“What happened?” Rose asked.
“My lawyer found something.”
“What?”
“A record from three years ago.”
Alexander picked up his jacket.
“It connects Daniel to the person you saw.”
Rose stood.
“Then I'm coming with you.”
“No.”
“Alexander—”
“This could be dangerous.”
Rose nodded.
“You can't keep telling me to stay behind.”
He looked at her.
“I don't want anything happening to you.”
Rose softened.
“I'll be careful.”
Alexander hesitated.
Finally, he nodded.
“Stay beside me.”
At the office, Alexander's lawyer placed a file on the desk.
“We found this hidden among the old company records.”
Alexander opened it.
Rose leaned closer.
Inside was a list of payments made three years ago.
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
“This account…”
His lawyer nodded.
“It belonged to Daniel.”
Rose looked at the documents.
“So Daniel really was involved.”
“Maybe,” Alexander said.
He turned another page.
Then he stopped.
There was a signature at the bottom.
Rose stared at it.
“I know that name.”
Alexander looked at her.
“Who is it?”
She pointed at the signature.
“That was my former manager.”
Alexander's face went still.
His lawyer looked between them.
“Are you saying your manager was connected to Daniel?”
Rose nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Alexander closed the file.
“Then we finally have the missing piece.”
But before anyone could say another word, Alexander's phone buzzed.
A message appeared on the screen.
Unknown number:
You should have stopped looking.
Alexander's expression hardened.
Another message arrived.
Now Rose is involved too.
Rose looked at him.
“What does it say?”
Alexander slowly put the phone down.
“They know about you.”
Rose's hear
t sank.
And somewhere outside the office, someone was watching them.
The secret was no longer buried.
