Chapter 14: The Warning

Alexander quickly put his phone away.

Rose noticed the change in his expression.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

Rose frowned.

“Don't do that again.”

“Do what?”

“Pretend everything is fine when it isn't.”

Alexander looked at her for a moment.

Then he handed her the phone.

Rose read the messages.

Her face became serious.

“They know about me.”

“Yes.”

“Who sent them?”

“I don't know.”

Rose looked toward the office window.

“Do you think someone is following us?”

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

“That is possible.”

The lawyer closed the file.

“You should both leave.”

Alexander nodded.

He took Rose's hand.

“Come on.”

They returned home in silence.

Rose walked into the living room and dropped onto the sofa.

“This marriage was supposed to be simple.”

Alexander sat across from her.

“It was supposed to be.”

She gave him a look.

“And now?”

“Now it's complicated.”

Rose laughed nervously.

“That's an understatement.”

Alexander leaned forward.

“I need you to promise me something.”

“What?”

“If anything strange happens, you tell me immediately.”

Rose nodded.

“Okay.”

“No hiding things.”

“I won't.”

“And don't meet Daniel alone.”

Rose looked at him.

“You really don't trust him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Alexander's expression changed.

“Because three years ago, I trusted him.”

Rose became quiet.

Before she could respond, the doorbell rang.

Both of them looked toward the door.

Alexander stood.

“Stay here.”

He walked to the entrance and looked through the security camera.

No one was there.

He opened the door carefully.

A small envelope lay on the ground.

Alexander picked it up.

There was no name on it.

He returned to the living room and opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Rose stared at it.

It showed her outside her old workplace three years earlier.

Her face went pale.

“Why do they have that?”

Alexander looked at the back of the photograph.

There was a message written underneath.

“You are asking the wrong questions.”

Rose looked at Alexander.

“What does that mean?”

Alexander didn't answer.

He was staring at another detail in the photograph.

Someone was standing in the background.

Someone Rose hadn't noticed before.

Alexander zoomed in.

His expression changed.

“I know this person.”

“Who?”

Alexander looked at Rose.

“My father.”

Rose stopped

“Your father?”

Alexander nodded slowly.

And suddenly, the mystery wasn't only about Daniel anymore.

It was about Alexander's own

family.

Someone had been watching Rose long before the wedding contract was ever signed.
