Chapter 15: The Photograph
Rose stared at the photograph.
“Your father was there?”
Alexander nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“But why?”
“I don't know.”
He picked up the photograph again and examined it carefully.
“My father told me he had nothing to do with what happened three years ago.”
Rose looked at him.
“Maybe he was investigating it.”
“Maybe.”
“Then you should ask him.”
Alexander shook his head.
“Not yet.”
Rose stopped
“Why not?”
“Because if someone wanted us to find this photograph, they may be trying to lead us somewhere.”
Rose looked at the envelope.
“So what do we do?”
“We find out who took the picture.”
Later that evening, Alexander called his lawyer.
“I need you to investigate something.”
“What?”
“A photograph from three years ago. Find out when it was taken and who owned the camera.”
The lawyer paused.
“That's going to take some time.”
“Take whatever time you need.”
Alexander ended the call.
Rose was standing nearby.
“Did you find anything?”
“Not yet.”
She nodded.
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
It was her former manager.
Rose answered cautiously.
“Hello?”
“Rose, we need to talk.”
“About what?”
“About Alexander.”
Rose's expression changed.
“What about him?”
“I can't explain over the phone.”
“Then where?”
There was a pause.
“Tomorrow. The old office.”
The call ended.
Rose lowered the phone.
Alexander immediately noticed.
“Who was that?”
“My former manager.”
“What did he want?”
“He wants to meet me tomorrow.”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
Rose stopped abruptly. Ooo
“You can't just tell me what I can and can't do.”
“I can tell you when something doesn't feel safe.”
“He may know what happened.”
“And that's exactly why you shouldn't go alone.”
Rose thought for a moment.
“Then come with me.”
Alexander nodded.
“Fine.”
The next morning, they arrived at the old office.
The building looked almost exactly as Rose remembered it.
She stopped outside.
“I haven't been here in years.”
Alexander looked at her.
“Are you sure you want to go inside?”
“Yes.”
They entered together.
The receptionist wasn't there.
The hallway was unusually quiet.
Then Rose noticed something.
“The door.”
“What?”
“My old manager's office.”
The door was slightly open.
Alexander moved ahead carefully.
Inside, the room was empty.
But there was a folder sitting on the desk.
Rose walked toward it.
Her name was written across the front.
She looked at Alexander.
“Why would my name be on this?”
He opened the folder.
Inside were several documents.
The first page made them both freeze.
It was a copy of the wedding contract.
Rose stared at it.
“How did they get this?”
Alexander's expression hardened.
Then he noticed something written at the bottom of the page.
A single sentence.
“The contract was never supposed to be between Alexander and Rose.”
Rose looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Alexander didn't know.
But before he could answer, footsteps sounded outside the office.
Someone was coming.
Alexander quickly closed the folde
r.
The door began to open.
And the person standing outside was someone neither of them expected to see.
