Chapter 10: The Secret Alexander arrived at his father's house twenty minutes later. He walked into the study and found his father standing beside the window. “You want to see me?” His father turned around. “Yes.” Alexander noticed the serious expression on his face. “What happened?” His father placed a folder on the desk. “I found this.” Alexander looked at it. His expression changed. The folder contained a copy of the marriage contract. “Where did you get this?” “That doesn't matter.” Alexander picked it up. “You went through my things?” “I was worried about you.” “You don't need to be.” His father shook his head. “You married Rose because of this agreement?” Alexander remained silent. “That girl doesn't know what she's getting herself into, does she?” “She knows.” “Does she know why you really needed this marriage?” Alexander's jaw tightened. “That's not your business.” His father stepped closer. “Everything that happens to this family becomes my business.” Alexander closed the folder. “The contract was necessary.” “For what?” Alexander didn't answer. His father sighed. “You've always believed you could control everything. Your company. Your reputation. Your future.” He looked directly at his son. “But people aren't contracts, Alexander.” Alexander stared at him. “I care about her.” His father was silent. Then he asked quietly, “Do you?” Alexander didn't respond. Because suddenly, he wasn't sure whether he could call what he felt for Rose simply an arrangement. Meanwhile, Rose was waiting at home. She checked the clock. Then check her phone. No message. She tried to distract herself by watching television, but she couldn't concentrate. Finally, her phone buzzed. Alexander: I'm coming home. Rose smiled without realizing it. Then she stopped. “Why am I smiling?” She quickly put the phone down. An hour later, the front door opened. Alexander walked inside. Rose immediately noticed something was different. “You're quiet.” “I'm tired.” “What happened?” “Nothing.” Rose stepped closer. “Alexander.” He looked at her. “What?” “You don't have to tell me everything.” She paused. “But don't lie to me.” Alexander stared at her. For a moment, he considered telling her the truth. About his father. About the contract. About the reason he had agreed to this marriage in the first place. But he wasn't ready. “It's complicated.” Rose nodded slowly. “Then I'll wait until you're ready.” Alexander looked surprised. “You'll wait?” “Yes.” She smiled. “After all, we're partners for the next year.” Alexander smiled faintly. “Partners.” Rose turned to walk away. “Good night.” “Rose.” She stopped. He wanted to say something. Something important. But the words wouldn't come. “Good night.” She walked upstairs. Alexander remained standing alone in the living room. Then his phone rang. He answered. “Hello?” A familiar voice spoke on the other end. “Alexander, we need to talk about Rose.” His expression hardened. “Who is this?” The voice answered. “You really don't remember me?” Alexander stopped abruptly. He knew that voice. It belonged to someone from his past. Someone he had Think would never return. And now, that person knew about Rose. The wedding contract was no longer a secret.
