Chapter Six: The Photograph Amelia couldn't stop staring at the photograph. Her father's warning kept repeating in her mind. Protect my daughter from the king's family. She looked at Alexander “Why would my father write this?” Adrian remained silent. “I asked you a question.” “I don't know.” “Then find out.” Alexander took the photograph carefully. “There is something strange about this picture.” “What?” He pointed to the corner. A small symbol had been drawn on the back. Amelia looked “I've seen that before.” “Where?” “In my father's old study.” Alexander’s eyes narrowed. “Take me there.” They returned to the house and went into the room Amelia had avoided for years. Dust covered the shelves. Old books and documents were still scattered across the desk. Amelia opened a drawer. Nothing. Another drawer. Nothing. Then Alexander noticed a small key taped underneath the desk. “Amelia.” She turned. He handed it to her. “This belongs to something.” She looked around the room. Then she noticed a small wooden cabinet hidden behind some books. The key fit perfectly. Inside was a sealed envelope. Amelia opened it. There was only one sheet of paper. She read the first line. “If you are reading this, then Alexander King's has finally found you.” Amelia stared She slowly looked at Alexander “You knew my father expected you to find me?” Alexander's expression became unreadable. “No.” She continued reading. “The truth about what happened years ago is hidden with the person you trust least.” Amelia lowered the paper. “Who is the person we trust least?” Alexander looked at her. Neither of them spoke. Then Amelia's phone buzzed. A message appeared from an unknown number. You are looking in the wrong place. A second message arrived. The person who betrayed your father is closer than you think. Amelia's blood ran cold. She looked toward the doorway. Someone was standing there. Victor. He stared at the letter in her hand. And for the first time, the calm expression on his face disappeared. “You found it,” he whispered. Amelia stepped forward. “Found what?” Victor didn't answer. Alexander moved between them. “Uncle Victor, what are you hiding?” Victor looked at Alexander Then at Amelia. Finally, he said: “Your father didn't die because of an accident.” Amelia's heart stopped. “What did you say?” Victor's eyes filled with regret. “Your father was trying to expose someone.” “Who?” Victor opened his mouth. But before he could answer, the lights suddenly went out. A loud crash came from downstairs. Alexander immediately turned toward the sound. “Stay here.” Amelia grabbed his arm. “No.” A nother crash echoed through the house. And then Victor whispered: “They've come back.”
