Chapter 18: The Second Letter Alexander stood alone in the hallway, staring at the envelope in his hand. His name was written across it. He had found it inside an old file his father had given him years ago. He hadn't opened it until now. Slowly, he tore it open. Inside was a letter. The handwriting was familiar. His father's. Alexander read the first few lines. Then his expression changed. “Alexander, if you are reading this, then Rose has already become part of your life.” He stopped. Why would his father write Rose's name? He continued reading. “There are things I never told you about her father.” Alexander's jaw tightened. He read the rest of the letter carefully. Three years ago, Rose's father had discovered that someone inside the company was secretly transferring money and documents. He had tried to expose the person responsible. But before he could reveal the truth, he disappeared from the investigation. Alexander's eyes narrowed. “Why didn't you tell me?” He turned the page. There was one final paragraph. “I asked you to marry Rose because I believed keeping her close was the safest way to protect her.” Alexander stopped. “So it really was planned.” But then he read the final line. “Do not tell Rose until you know whom you can trust.” Alexander folded the letter. For the first time, he understood why his father had been so protective. But another question remained. Who had been watching Rose all these years? Upstairs, Rose was still awake. She sat on her bed, reading her father's letter again. There was one name mentioned repeatedly. King. She had never understood why her father had warned her about the King family. Now she was beginning to. A quiet knock came at her door. Rose quickly hid the letter. “Come in.” Alexander entered. He looked serious. “I need to tell you something.” Rose's heart began beating faster. “What?” Alexander sat across from her. “Your father and my father knew each other.” “I already know.” Alexander looked surprised. “How?” Rose hesitated. Then she reached beneath her pillow and pulled out the letter. “I found this.” Alexander read it. His expression became tense. “You found this tonight?” “Yes.” Rose looked at him. “Did you know?” Alexander was silent. Then he nodded. “I just found out too.” Rose stared at him. “Then why did you choose me?” Alexander took a slow breath. “Because my father believed you needed protection.” Rose shook her head. “That doesn't explain everything.” “No.” He looked directly at her. “There is more.” Before he could continue, his phone rang. Alexander answered. “Hello?” A voice spoke quickly. His face changed. “What?” He stood immediately. “Where?” He listened. Then his eyes moved toward Rose. “I'll be there.” He ended the call. “What happened?” Rose asked. Alexander grabbed his jacket. “My lawyer found something.” “What?” “They found your father's missing file.” Rose stood. “Where?” Alexander looked at her. “In an old storage room belonging to my father.” Rose's eyes widened. “Then let's go.” Alexander nodded. But as they reached the door, his phone buzzed again. A message appeared. Unknown number: If you open that file, Rose will finally learn why her father disappeared. Rose read the message over his shoulder. She looked at Alexander. “What does that mean?” Alexander didn't answer. He simply stared at the screen. For the first time, both of them realized the truth was no longer hiding from them. It was coming for them.
