CHAPTER 2

ADAM'S POV "Bring the girl up. We just want to see her. Probably have a word or two with her." I leaned back in my chair, eyes fixed on Jarek, my trusted bodyguard, as I listened to Dominique's urgent voice on the phone. To distract myself from the growing annoyance, I reached for the pistol on my desk, casually loading it with a single bullet. Jarek's eyes widened as I placed an apple on his head, his face paling as he understood what I was getting at. "Let's make this interesting," I whispered, a cold smile spreading across my face. My chair creaked as I spun it around, taking aim. Jarek's breath caught, his eyes locked on the pistol but he didn't dare speak to interrupt my call. One miss, and his life would be over. "I said, Dominique, stop asking. She’s my property now. Mine.” I spoke calmly into the phone, my finger tightening on the trigger. The sound of the gunshot echoed through the study, and the apple exploded into tiny bits, leaving Jarek shaken… but alive. My aim was still just as perfect. I turned my attention back to the phone like I had not just used someone as a shooting target, my voice unwavering. "We're done here, Dominique. If you ever bring this up, I will kill you." I hung up, dismissing the conversation before Dominique could utter anything else. Jarek let out a relieved breath, his composure regained. "Sir?" he queried, his voice steady. “How's the girl?” I asked, my thoughts already shifting to the eighteen year old who had almost gotten herself killed by coming to the meeting, luckily my men got her back to her room before the others could get to her. He faltered, his left eye twitching. "She's.. she’s awake… crying. The maids tried to calm her down, but she's quite…errr unresponsive." I ran a hand through my hair and sighed. "Bring her here." He nodded and left the room, leaving me to my thoughts. Flipping a switch by a table, the room was plunged into near darkness, waiting for her to show up. I didn’t want her seeing my face. At least not yet. There was a slight knock on the door and I adjusted on my seat, asking her to come in. The door was pushed open and she walked in slowly, her gaze to the ground as she struggled not to fall judging by the way her legs shook with each step. “Audrey..” I muttered out gently. Her breath hitched “How are you doing?” I asked the first question that came to mind. I didn’t mean for my voice to come out that rough and intimidating, but oh well. She didn't raise her gaze up, her hair was feathered across her face and she didn't seem to want to tuck it back behind her ears. Something in me wanted to do it for her. And more. “What .. what do you want to do to me?” Her voice came out in between shaky breaths and I could smell her fear from where I sat. She fiddled uncontrollably with her silk shirt. “Nothing at all. How are you feeling?. Tell me.” I asked again. I was particularly concerned about the nightmares. And in the next moment she raised her face up, her eyes squinting trying to make out my face in the dark but failing. Even if she could see me properly, I was still with my mask. “There must be something you want with me.” her voice shook as she spoke. She was scared. Terrified even. “Look, Audrey. You just have to calm down. You're safe here” She kept shut but I knew she was still trembling. That wasn't good. I didn't want her to feel unsafe in my presence. “Audrey…” I could hear her shuffle awkwardly on her feet. “Yeah?” She muttered. “You still haven’t answered my question.” “Oh?.. Uhmm I’m ..I’m okay.” A sigh slipped out from her, it sounded like a moan. Damn! I shifted back on my seat, wanting to have a better look at her cute round face. Her freckles adding to her beauty. “Hmm.. I just wanna ask you a few questions” I rested my hand on the table, waiting for her to show some sign that she was listening which came in form of a nod “Before you came here… did you have any friends or anything?. Perhaps something you’d like to do?” I asked carefully. She hesitated, her hands clenching into fists on her dress. “I… I had one. Amelia. We met uh… she was among the girls… with me and uh…she's my friend. Was. She was my friend, I don't know where she…” she choked back on a sob and shut up Amelia… My mind raced back to the auctioning of that day. Amelia. I don't think she was killed. No. I scoffed as I realized what had happened to the girl, she was bought and it just had to be Axel. He bought her. Fuck. I sighed and placed a hand on my forehead thinking, Audrey clearly seemed to consider Amelia a close friend so If I was able to get Amelia, she would feel at ease and open up more. That sounded like such a great idea. “Audrey…” I suddenly muttered, looking back up at the girl who jerked at the sound of her name. Who gets frightened at their own name! “Come here Bella.” I said huskily, my voice smooth as my eyes frolicked around her curvy figure. She tensed but didn't move, playing dumb like she had not heard me. Still biting those damn lips. “I don't like repeating myself for any reason. Come. Here.” I spaced my words so she understood that i wasn't joking around. With wobbling legs, she came over to my table and stood there. “Sit” I ordered roughly. She immediately dropped down to the chair beside me, her form tense and her eyes refusing to turn to look at me. “Stay put.” I said, standing up to open my drawer. I retrieved a small box noting how her interest has been piqued and her gaze was now on the small wooden box. I came to stand in front of her and I dropped the box on the table, opening it and removing the first gift. “Here.” I said, giving her the phone. Her hands trembled but she reached out to collect it. “What is…” she paused, realizing what I had given her. “A phone? Why?” She whispered. Her eyes glittering under the dim light. “You'll need it. Don't worry, it's a burner phone and it's all yours. I wanted you to have it.” I explained— not entirely the truth— before reaching inside the box to remove the second item. A leg chain. I squatted down, noting how she reacted to that, her frame shrinking into the seat. “Calm down.” I said gruffly as I grabbed her leg gently, trying to put on the beautiful leg chain for her. As my hand wrapped around her ankle, a jolt of electricity shot through my being, my wolf immediately started pacing about. I paused what I was doing, a frown on my face… what the hell was that? A sudden urge rose in me, a primal sense of desire coursing through my veins making my skin prickle in awareness. I gritted my teeth, fighting the urge to act out on the thought swirling through my troubled mind as I quickly clasped the chain around her ankle, fumbling with it. This wasn't about desire, I was protecting for f***s sake yet the raw s****l urge within me was real Finally I managed to lock it around her leg and I quickly stood up. “You may leave.” I horridly instructed, my voice strained but still calm. She immediately stood up, shooting towards the door. “I Uhmmm Thank you.. “ she paused as if trying to recall my name. I almost let out a chuckle because I knew she didn’t know it. “Audrey?” I called after her. She stopped abruptly, turning around to look at me. “The phone.. you left it on the table.” As if contemplating her next line of option, she rushed to the table and grabbed it avoiding my gaze. “Thank you .. I uhh.. Yh.” She stuttered a little before leaving. But I didn’t miss the smile playing on her lips. PING My phone! It was a reminder for the hunt tomorrow taking place in the forest backing my estate. This should be a perfect opportunity to bring Amelia so she could be with Audrey all night while we wolves did our thing. Collapsing back on my seat, I thought about the hunt. It was simple. I would somehow get Axel bring Amelia along. I picked up my phone lying on the table and dialed that one number, knowing how wrong this could go. “Hello Twin Brother?” Hopefully Amelia was still alive..
