Chapter 1: The Moon Ceremony
The scent of crushed pine and candle smoke filled the Great Hall of the Blackthorn Kingdom, and Aria Nightshade stood at the edge of it all, trying to be invisible. She had learned, over twenty-two years, exactly how to do that. An Omega did not stand in the center of a room. An Omega did not meet an Alpha's eyes. An Omega simply existed at the margins, useful and unseen, and tonight — the night of the Moon Ceremony, when every unmated wolf in the Blackthorn territory gathered beneath the full moon to learn the names the Goddess had written for them — Aria intended to remain exactly where she was: near the back wall, half-hidden behind a pillar draped in silver ribbon. She hadn't expected to be called at all. Omegas were rarely gifted mates by the Moon Goddess. It was one of the quiet cruelties of the rank — you served, you worked, you lowered your gaze, and you did not get to hope for the one thing every wolf secretly wanted. So when the Oracle's voice rang out across the hall, ancient and resonant, Aria almost didn't realize the name being called was her own. "Aria Nightshade." The murmur that swept the crowd hit her like cold water. Heads turned. Betas and Deltas and Warriors she had spent years being ignored by now stared at her with open shock, as if a servant had wandered onto a throne. She had no choice but to walk forward. The crowd parted, reluctant, the way water parts around something it doesn't want to touch. Aria kept her chin low, her hands clasped in front of her plain gray dress — the only decent one she owned — and made her way toward the dais where the Alpha King stood waiting. Kael Blackthorn. She had seen him from a distance before, at gatherings, at hunts, always surrounded by Betas and Elite Warriors who moved like his shadow made flesh. Up close, he was worse. Broader. Colder. His eyes were a gray so pale they looked carved from winter ice, and when they landed on her, she felt them like a physical weight pressing down on her spine. He did not look pleased. "Kneel," the Oracle instructed her gently, and Aria did, because that was what Omegas did — they knelt, they obeyed, they made themselves small in rooms full of people who mattered more. The Oracle took Kael's hand and Aria's, pressing them together with surprising strength for someone so frail. The moment their palms touched, something happened that Aria hadn't been prepared for. Warmth. A pull, low and unmistakable, deep in her chest — as though a string tied around her heart had suddenly gone taut, connecting her to the man in front of her. She gasped before she could stop herself. She looked up. For one unguarded second, something flickered across Kael's face too — recognition, maybe even wonder — before it vanished beneath a mask of stone. "The Goddess has spoken," the Oracle announced to the hall. "Kael Blackthorn, Alpha King of the Blackthorn Pack, meet your true mate — Aria Nightshade." Silence. Then whispers, sharp and disbelieving, rippling outward like cracks spreading through ice. *An Omega. The King's mate is an Omega.* Aria barely heard them. She was still looking at Kael, waiting — hoping, despite every lesson life had taught her not to — that he would say something. Anything. Instead, his jaw tightened. His eyes, which had softened for that single heartbeat, went hard again, harder than before, as though he were angry at himself for the softness at all. "Kael." A woman's voice, silk-smooth, cut through the hall. Lyra Ashmoon stepped forward from the crowd, resplendent in deep violet, her golden hair catching the candlelight like a second moon. She was beautiful in the way of something dangerous — a blade polished until it gleamed. "The prophecy," she said quietly, but not so quietly that the front rows didn't hear. "You remember what the Oracle scrolls said. A mate born of low rank, marked by the old blood, who will bring the kingdom to ruin." Aria's stomach dropped. She had no idea what prophecy Lyra meant — but she watched it land on Kael like a blow, watched his expression shutter completely. "Kael," Aria whispered, his name strange and fragile in her mouth. It was the first time she had spoken to him at all. He looked down at her — this stranger the Goddess had chosen for him, kneeling in her plain gray dress, her hand still resting in his — and for one more terrible second, she thought she saw regret. Then he pulled his hand free. "I reject this mate bond," Kael said, his voice carrying to every corner of the silent hall, flat and final as a door slamming shut. "Aria Nightshade is not fit to stand beside the throne." The words hit her harder than any physical blow could have. She felt the bond between them — that warm, taut string — snap violently, and pain tore through her chest so sharp she nearly cried out. Around her, the hall erupted into noise, but it all sounded distant, muffled, like she was drowning. She looked up at Kael one last time, searching his frozen face for even a flicker of doubt. There was none. Aria rose on unsteady legs, every eye in the Great Hall fixed on her — the Omega, the rejected mate, the girl who would never be enough — and did the only thing she had left. She ran. She didn't see Lyra's small, satisfied smile as she disappeared through the doors. She didn't see the flash of grief Kael quickly buried before anyone else could notice it. She only knew that somewhere behind her, in the ashes of the life she'd known, something ancient had just begun to stir — and it had been waiting for her for a very long time.
