A Warmthless night
“I’ll be late, don’t wait for me”
The phone beeped signaling that the other person had hung up. The deep baritone voice seemed to still echo in her ears reminding her again of what his responses had been since the past few weeks.
What she hadn’t expected was that he’d repeat the same response on the day of their 2nd marriage anniversary. Hoping that maybe her husband had a well-planned surprise for her at the last hour was only her being delusional. A surprise was a far-off expectation when he didn’t even care to wish her for once on this special occasion. “Did he even care to remember?” she murmured as her voice cracked at the end. Tears glided through her pale cheeks as she realized how silly her life had been all this time.
A ding-dong sound resounded in the room as the minute hand passed midnight indicating the beginning of a new day. Serena wiped her cheeks as she glanced at the decadent red velvet cake she made this morning along with all his favourite dishes. She had dismissed the cooking staff earlier that day so that she could cook something special for him all on her own but what now?
What else if not see to it herself what her husband had been ‘busy’ with all this time?
After all, she was a caring wife so what if he wasn’t?
She made her way from the sunroom to the master bedroom through all the lit candles and silly rose petals that she had scattered around to appeal to some romance which she now realized, wasn’t even there but what was present there, was ONLY lust, no care and LOVE?
“I never got the fortune to feel that” She chuckled at her misery. She took the car keys before taking a glance at her reflection. A pair of green orbs stared back at her, her features were soft and feminine. A button-shaped nose, pouty pink lips and wavy blonde locks that reached her waist- everything about her screamed perfection. Her cheeks and eyes were still wet from her tears which made her lashes appear more textured and thicker. And she effortlessly pulled off the red spaghetti strap V-neck Draped mini bodycon dress that she wore and paired with red heels and essential accessories, it was time she made her appearance at her husband’s office.
A matte black Koenigsegg speeded from the basement as it blended into the darkness. It was a moonless night deprived of any natural light, making it seem darker than usual as if nature too was trying to match the aura of Briggs Manor.
There was barely any staff present by the time she reached there. The sound of her heels clicking on the floor echoed as she made her way to the elevator. She might have married him for two years, but this was her only second time visiting her husband's office.
The elevator door opened and the sight of an employee caught her eye who was probably doing overtime and now was taking a coffee break. He stood dumbstruck as he stared at her, processing her presence at this late at night. He was probably a recruit judging by how he seemed to fail to recognise her as his boss's wife. She passed by him and reached the main office. There was no one at the PA desk, "maybe she left" she thought. She went to open the door directly instead of knocking when she heard someone call her and that made her pause.
"-And oh my god, her eyes are just hypnotic and her juicy pink lips-"
"Are you sure you aren't drunk from all the coffee you have been gulping since evening?" his colleague interrupted with a sigh before he could complete another round of describing this 'beauty in red'.
"Not, you should have seen her green eyes and those silky blonde locks, you would have the same-"he continued when another colleague who was older than him and had joined long ago interrupted.
"GREEN EYED BLONDIE?? " "Yes" he confirmed.
"That's Mrs Briggs". Their eyes widened and met in unison as realization dawned on them and one of them quickly fished out their phone.
" Hello, Mrs. Briggs,"
A sweet feminine voice from a young lady probably in her 20s stood in front of her in a business suit, she was heaving for breath as if she had been running a mile to catch up to her.
"Mr Briggs is busy right now, he had to attend an important meeting, Would you like to pass him a message or is there anything you want me to do?" she asked politely with a practised tone, her tone high-pitched.
"No, that's fine, I'll just wait for him in his office," I said mustering up a small smile as I initiated to reach over to the door. But she was quick to stand between me and the door as she hastily said " You don't need to"
"What do you mean I don't need to? I'm his wife I have the right to do so" I said with furrowed brows, looking into her eyes in question.
