Zara's Trial
“A wolf-less Omega—like yourself—CANNOT be Luna,” the prime minister declared, his tone final and unwavering.
Zara’s breath hitched. Her pulse pounded in her ears.
“What nonsense are you talking about?” Zara demanded, her voice ringing through the high walls of the court-like chamber.
Rows of stern-faced-looking men stared back at her, their faces lacking any form of expression as they broke the disheartening news to Zara Callister.
She let out a dry, bitter laugh. “I would take it as some joke, Prime Minister.” Her body trembled from fear and anxiety.
“I cannot make sense of what you just said,” she said, trying to sound braver than she felt.
“That is our decision, Zara. You simply cannot rule the crescent moon pack as the Luna…” An older man finished.
However Zara was unwilling to comply, “But I can. That is what my father had taught me ever since I was a kid. The alpha taught me how to be-” A loud bang echoed through the room as someone slammed their hands on the table, making Zara to flinch.
“The Alpha hid a great truth from us about his daughter,” The elder spoke with fury, blazing in his eye. “If it weren't for the accident that happened on your birthday, we wouldn't have found out you were an omega—a wolf-less one.”
A tinge of tears lingered in Zara's eyes, pulling to the horror of her twentieth birthday. The day she was supposed to transform into her glorious wolf. However, nothing happened. No transformation. No awakening.
That wasn't all that happened .
“I understand what my parents did was unforgivable,” she admitted, her voice strained. “However, you cannot deny me my right to be a Luna for the Crescent Moon pack. It is just not right.” Zara half-yelled, trying to sound neutral, constraining her anger that boiled in her.
Her fist tightened but she remained calm.
Silence fell upon them as the councilmen stared at each other.
“Despite being an omega, I can lead and protect our people. I will make sure nobody ever finds out,” Her voice was steady and resolute as her promise.
The room fell silent for a while, and the councilmen began whispering to each other, shaking their heads. She knew on instinct it wasn't on her side.
However, Zara thinks their judgment of her was poor. Because she was an Omega, it didn’t give them the right to take away her position as Luna.
One of the councilmen, Cedric, the Alpha's beta, got up, concerns etched all over his face as he walked up close to Zara, where she stood.
Zara's chest tightened and her breath hollow, making her breath heavily. Her knees weakened with every passing moment, and a knot was tied in her stomach.
Cedric paused, and stood face to face with her. “Zara, Omegas…" He paused, lips pressing into a firm thin line. "Omegas are nothing more than breeders.”
Zara knew she had lost all the battles. Her knees felt like spaghetti on a spoon, and almost immediately she dropped to the floor; the tears she fought back suddenly blurred her vision.
“And it'll be considered an abomination for a mere breeder to rule a pack.” Cedric paused and stretched out his hands to help Zara up.
He felt great pity for her, but it wasn't in his place to decide who the next Luna or Alpha was.
Cedric lifted her up and stepped closer to her to whisper, “I know how you feel, and I urge you to be strong…”
However, something snapped inside Zara, and she pushed him away from her.
Her gaze shifted to her uncle, Kael, who seemed less concerned about the whole situation.
Zara's legs carried her, and she ran up to Kael, grappling his shirt.
Surely he would intervene.
Her body vibrating uncontrollably, “Tell them…” she pleaded.“Tell them I'm worthy of being a Luna. Tell them about all my training….” Her words were cut off when Kael spoke up.
Kael’s face held no expression, with a menacing look. “Omegas aren't even allowed to be here, let alone discuss being a Luna. What a joke?” he scoffed, yanking her hands away from him.
Zara's hands dropped to the wooden table, her pupils sucked in like she saw a ghost, mortified by his resolution.
“What!!?” She let out softly out of disbelief.
Zara found it hard to believe that the man she had loved like a second father, said something like that.
Kael adjusted his coat and got up. “I don't understand why we are wasting time with this conversation already,” He turned from the councilmen. “It is clear that Zara is unfit for Luna,” he said, and they all conformed in unison.
Zara couldn't sit and watch them humiliate her. This was exactly what her father, the late alpha, had taught her. To be strong, as she would soon be the next Luna.
Her frown deepened, her fist tightened, and her gaze turned furious as she opened her mouth to speak.
“You guys don't have the right to dictate my fate,” she spat, her voice low and venomous. “I will be the next Luna…”
Before she could finish, a hard slap swiped across her face within a split second, and she held her face where the impact had been made.
“For an omega, I don't know what gave you the audacity to speak to us.” Kael roared furiously at her; however, Zara wasn't going to back down.
With tears in her eyes, she drew out a small dagger, given to her by her father in case of any emergency.
She aimed it at the councilmen; however, they looked more relaxed than fearful.
With the daggers stretched out, her hands trembling, she struggled to hold the dagger in her sweaty palms.
“I will be the Luna, and if anyone tries to touch me, I will slit the person's throat,” she warned, her breath heavy but serious.
A stunned silence followed.
“You're committing treason, Zara.” The cold voice sent shivers down her spine.
Her mate. Her fiancé.
She turned back abruptly and saw Damian walking in casually. Her heart leapt.
“Damian!” Zara whispered hopefully; relief washed over her, and a weak smile spread across her tattered, sweaty face.
Damian strode up to her and snatched the weapon from her and held it.
Zara's heart leapt; she knew that Damian would support her.
He had always told her that, a promise she had held on to.
“Tell them, Damian.” She begged.“Tell them not to take it away from me,” She said, standing close to him, her eyes clearly displaying desperation.
A smile tugged at Damian's face, and he lifted his face to Zara. “I cannot do anything, Zara.” His words hit her hard.
“It is true. An omega has no position as the Luna.” Damian's demeanor darkened as he spoke.
Zara's heart crushed into a million pieces “How could he say that? After all, what have we been through? All the promises we both shared. It all meant nothing? Doesn't that make any sense?”
She reckoned within herself before mustering the courage to ask.
“How…what do you mean?” Her voice cracked, barely above whispers.
Damian moved backwards and opened his arms in gesture.“I mean, you cannot be Luna Zara. It's not going to happen.”
“I expect you to support me, Damian, as my fiancé.” She yelled at the top of her voice, her body trembling.
“Why are you siding with them?” Zara asked obliviously, tears rolling down her cheeks, but she remained strong.
“Aren't you supposed to be my husband? Aren't you supposed to be my mate?” Her voice cracked as reality dawned on her.
“I cannot be a mate to a wolf less Omega… Worst of all, a breeder,” he said evilly, grinning while Zara watched with mixed emotions: anger, confusion, and a broken heart.
But before another word could be let out, Kael spoke up. “They're here to take you. You will no longer be part of this pack. A punishment for keeping such a secret about being an omega. You will be sold to the Bloodstone pack as a breeder. That is our final decision.”
In defiance, Zara pushed Damian, making the dagger fall to the marble floor; however, she quickly grabbed it and used it as a shield.
“Stay back, nobody comes close to me,” she said, stretching the dagger to defend herself against the group of men.
“I refuse to be humiliated like this. They cannot deny me of my right,” Zara thought, still standing on her words.
“Cease her!” yelled the Prime Minister, and immediately, some guards began marching up to her.
“No, no, no,” Zara yelled out while thinking of a way to avoid this fate of hers.
With a swift movement, she dodged the guards and ran out of the court chambers with men hurling behind her.
*******************************************
The heavy rain blinded Zara's eyes, but she dared not to let herself down now that she was at the end of the road.
Cold penetrated into her thin clothes, her lips quivering and body shivering from the cold.
“You're fooling yourself, if you think you can win this,” Damian called out, his voice closing in.
“Why did you follow me out here?” Zara snarled at him, holding onto the knife as if her life depended on it.
Damian ignored her questions and walked towards her. The remaining guards had gone back to the mansion on Damian’s command.
“You know, I loved you,” he began, then stroked her wet hair, closing their gap. Zara’s skin crawled at his touch.
Zara slapped his hands
“You lying bastard. Don't f*****g touch me with those filthy, backstabbing hands,” she fiercely roared at him, panting heavily.
Immediately, in her peripheral vision, she saw someone swift past Damian. It was more like a shadowy figure that she had noticed following her a while back, although she ignored it, thinking it was Damian’s men.
The earth was soil where she stood due to the downpour; behind was a riverbank that flowed freely to a waterfall.
Miles from where she stood.
Damian kept walking close to her, a grin on his face as he spoke, “I will be the next Alpha..”
“Is that all you wanted? To be the alpha? You never loved me, did you?” Zara cut off, tears rolling down her face. “You engaged me because of the benefits?”
Damian nodded his head. “Yes, Zara, you are right. I've always wanted to be the alpha and possess the Crescent Moon pack’s treasure…”
“What treasure?” Zara thought within herself.
“But you're always in the way. The obstacle to my success. You're nothing but a lousy nuisance.” He continued in a cryptic tone. “I caused it all. I made them turn against you. I orchestrated everything that's happened…” he said and grinned.
Zara's eyes widened in disbelief. “What?” She managed to let out. She couldn't believe the man she had devoted her life to, turned out to be a monster who ruined her life.
“You…you killed my parents?” The words vibrating in her body, unable to look at him in the eye again. “You took everything…from me” she said, softly.
“And that's not all I'm taking away”
“I will be the Alpha. The only way to do that is to kill the next heir”
And with a swift movement, he kicked her in the guts. Zara lost her balance, before she could react Damian grabbed the pocket knife and stabbed in the stomach.
Blood oozed from her mouth as she stared dead in Damian's eyes.
“It ain't over” she said before losing consciousness and falling over the cliff.
