Chapter 3

Chloe's POV I turned pale, unable to understand whatever he just said, so I decided to cool the tension. I cleared my throat and immediately headed back to the main drill of the day. “So small stretches first.” I moved close to him and used my body as an aid so he could support his weight. I watched how he groaned, face twisted in pain. Standing was a massive task for him. “s**t!” He slipped out of my grip, landing hard on his wheelchair. “f*****g be careful with me.” He roared, eyes glaring at me. I pressed my lips together. “Yeah, it's totally my fault. Let's try—” “Are you kidding me?” He was still trying to catch his breath. I frowned. “Do you plan to remain in that wheelchair forever, or do you want to get back on your feet so you don't have to see my face again?” He exhaled, eyes still fixed on me. “It hurts.” This was the first time he spoke to me, but I inched closer, crouching to take a look at the casted leg. “I'm sorry.” I stretched my hands to touch his leg, but he put his other foot in the way. “Don't forget the f*****g rules. You're trying to invade my personal space.” I frowned. “I'm your personal trainer. I'm supposed to do that, am I not?” He parted his lips, but no words came out. Seeing that he had nothing to say, I gently touched his leg, staring at him in the eyes. “So how about you tell me how the accident happened?” Silence. He stared at me for a few seconds before finally parting his lips to speak. “It was on the Rink, a national game. I was certain we would win, but just when I was about to score my first goal, my skates messed up, and I hurt my foot pretty badly. That's the only part I can remember besides the excruciating screams that left my lips.” I pressed my lips, watching how he exhaled. “Relieving, wasn't it?” He twisted his lips, glaring at me. “For you, right? Because it felt like I was reliving hell.” I laughed. “You don't really mean that. I saw the relief in your eyes.” He scoffed, not responding. “Do you still see yourself playing hockey?” My hands moved to his knees, and I stared at him with a small smile on my lips. “It would be wonderful. I always dream about those moments.” “Great. Then you shouldn't be afraid to take steps towards recovery. Do you know how many people are waiting to cheer your name again?” I didn't believe I said this to him, but I guess it worked because the training went smoothly. Sure he was in pain, but that didn't stop him from giving his best. “Good, you did well today; see you tomorrow, Mr.—” “Call me Adrian; you earned it.” I didn't argue with him. “Okay Adrian, see you during tomorrow's—” “Um, how about we have lunch today?” My eyes widened, but he brushed off my thought immediately. “You did well on your first day; you deserve it.” My lips slowly curled into a smile. “Okay then, we'll have lunch.” The next few days were better than the last. We got along well, and had lunch and dinner more often. He even gave me one of his signed shirts.“My hockey teammate is coming over today; you're free to join us.” He explained after our training for that day. My eyes widened. Was he inviting me to join him— “You don't have to come if you don't want to. I was just hoping I could introduce my trainer to—” “I'll be there.” I cut in, and once we rounded up the conversation, I headed into the room, closed the door, leaning into the door as I exhaled. “This is getting better than expected. At least, he was no longer a pain in the ass.” I took a shower and dressed up in a nice outfit. Still in my regular sweatpants and a matching top, then I let my hair fall over my shoulder, rather than tying it up in a ponytail. I headed downstairs, and the moment he saw me, I watched how his eyes lit up. A smirk played on his lips, and he made a comment that made me stop in my tracks. “Sure I shouldn't make you my girlfriend?” I frowned. “You know that's wrong. You should understand that it would affect both our careers, and I know you're not willing to lose your career, right?” Adrian nodded. “Yeah, right.” I noticed how his tone died, but thankfully, the doorbell rang, and it wasn't long before his friend was escorted to where we were. “Bro!” He hugged him and then pulled away from him with his eyes fixed on me. His brows knitted, and I could tell he had a question. “Who's the chick?” he paused and then exhaled. “Don't tell me you got yourself a hot bodyguard.” Adrian's face twisted in a smile. “No, James. This is my personal trainer, Chloe. She's the one who would help me get better so I can get in the rink faster.” His eyes widened, and I watched how he walked over to me, stretching out his palms. I put mine in his, and he kissed the back of my palms lightly. “You look pretty, I must say. Are you an angel because you—” “That's enough, James. She's my personal trainer, and that's all there is. There's no point flirting with her.” James smirked, pulling away, but he didn't fail to wink, making me blush. “Well, she's pretty. I want to take her out on a date.” My eyes widened, and I pressed my lips, feeling shy. “No. She's not allowed to leave. She only attends to my—” “Cut the slacks, bro; it's just a harmless date. Besides, I'm sure she wants to go with me, right?” I felt my body burn hot, so I pressed my lips. As always, I wasn't the one to make the decision. “Come on, bro, please. Have I ever asked you for anything?” He frowned. “She's not supposed to leave, and she's—” “Please…” The tension was rising fast, I could feel it. “Fine, but you have two hours, and it has to be tomorrow, nothing more.” He nodded. “Cool. You don't have to worry; she won't stay out too long.” I swallowed. Why did I have a feeling he was reluctant towards me going on a date with James?
