What? 30 seconds of complete silence. Never have these boys been this quiet as long as I have known them.
Slowly the coach started to smile. Ummm... sir?
Then the butthead started to laugh!
"I'm only joking!" he said between laughs. His big booming belly laugh echoed through the room.
None of us joined him and none of us thought he was funny.
Kyle, his son, however, took pity on him, laughing all alone and chuckled. "Good one Dad". He said, with a little smile that definitely looked forced.
Coach stopped laughing. Stood straight back up. "It wasn't supposed to be." he said pointedly to his son. Kyle looked down at his feet.
"As I'm sure you gossiping teenagers have heard; the team we were supposed to play has been kicked out of the league for the remainder of the year. I'm not going to waste my time re-telling a story most of you know. If you don't know it, ask one of your teammates. Now to get to business. We have ice time in half an hour. Drink some water and be ready. We will be playing Ms. Harrows favorite team. Hine's Creek."
Everyone looked at me and I grumbled. Coach Harlin was right. I hate that team. That is the name of Lawson's team.
"Please put the rest of your gear on and be ready for our pre-game meeting in 15 minutes." Coach asked.
Kinsly and I left the boy's room to give them some privacy and to get the remainder of our gear on.
Our room was basically a broom closet. It really wasn't one, but it felt like it. Because we were the only girls and needed privacy to change, the administrators put us in one of the two referee rooms. Which was most likely gonna lead to the zebras being mad at us because all the refs today are in one room. I was just going to ignore that tid-bit for now though.
"Are you ready for the last game of the day?" asked Kins.
"Yes" I mumbled. I really wasn't lying. I was excited about the final game of the day. I was still kinda sore from the first one of the day. What I wasn't excited about though was to be playing Hines Creek. Lawsons team.
"You don't sound excited," She remarked.
We were sitting across from each other in this relatively small space, getting the rest of our gear on. We had about 8 minutes until we had to be back in the boys' room for the pre-game meeting. I was just finishing strapping my elbow pad, when I heard Kinsly let out a loud Huff. I looked up at her and burst out laughing!
Her head was stuck under her jersey. It was caught on one of the ridges of her chest plate strap, making it impossible to free her head on her own, as her hands were stuck upwards. She couldn't lower them without ripping her jersey. I was laughing so hard, making no attempt to get near her and help. This isn't even the first time she's done this. She did it last practice. I heard her huff very loudly again.
"Kay! I need your help! Quit laughing, it's not funny! This is very uncomfortable." I had to take pity on her and help her. She sounded very defeated. Before I got up to help her though, I took my phone and snapped a picture, labeling it "Defeated by her jersey".
I stood up and got her unstuck. She let out a huge sigh of relief and said "thank you".
"You might not want to say that."
She gave me a curious look. "Why?"
I put my jersey on without struggling and grabbed my helmet and gloves. I looked for my stick, remembering I had left it in the boys' room. I stood up and reached for the door before answering her.
"I took a picture and sent it to the team group chat". And with that, I ran out the door as fast as I could.
I heard her anger yell, "YOU WILL REGRET THIS!!!" I just laughed as I ran to the boys' room.
I made it to their room and knocked. When I was given the clear to come in, I went and sat down where I had been before.
"Where's Ms. Smith, Ms. Harrow?" asked Coach
"She's coming." I replied out of breath with a smile on my face.
I heard the tell-tale ding as my message finally went through (the service sucks in this building. They should really fix that). All the boys went to check their phones. One by one they started to laugh. Kyle, who was sitting beside his father, the coach, showed him the picture of Kins. He laughed to himself a bit. Then he announced to the room "No phones in the dressing room. Put them away before I bring back the phone basket." All the boys immediately put their phones back where they had stored them. I had left mine in my dressing room.
Kins came into the room, with a scowl on her face. She looked right at me, sat beside me, and whispered, "I will get you back. And rest assured you will regret what you did". I just laughed at her attempt to sound threatening. She wasn't very good at threatening me.
"Everyone! Quiet down now," the Coach announced. "It's time to go over possible plays and the opposing teams' weaknesses".
