CHAPTER 1; The new environment.
It was 4 a.m., still dark, when Kemmy heard her name from the living room. Half asleep, she mumbled to herself, but her excitement quickly took over. Today was the day they would leave the village. "Kemmy, wake up!! Time to pack, the bus will soon arrive!" her mom called out. Kemmy rose up with excitement; she had been waiting for this day. She stood up, showing her average height and lovely demeanor, and smiled as she stretched. "Good morning, dad, morning mom! Hi, good morning bro!" she greeted her family with a smile as she went to help pack. "Good morning, sweetie," her mom replied. "Let's hurry up; we don't want to miss the bus," her dad added. As they finished packing, Kemmy's dad expressed gratitude, "This is our greatest achievement...Kemmy will finally have a better life." Kemmy thanked her parents, tears of joy in her eyes. "Dad, mom, this is the greatest thing I have ever wished for. I know we aren't rich, but...you've done everything to make us happy, thank you." Everyone smiled at her. "Okay...everyone eat fast; we've wasted much time here," her mom said. They ate quickly and soon were off to town. Shane was in deep thought when Kemmy called his attention. "Shane! Shane! What's wrong? Where did you wander off to?" Kemmy asked, noticing her brother's distraction. "Nothing, I'm just...bored and sleepy," Shane lied. "If you say so," Kemmy said, closing her eyes to sleep. Meanwhile, Shane thought about finding a job in their new location and dealing with his demanding girlfriend, Haness. "Haness has been disturbing me about changing her wardrobe and hair style, and I haven't any money to give her," Shane thought to himself. "Haness" was a lady who complained a lot. Beautiful, agreed, but rude, inconsiderate, proud, naughty, and sometimes malicious. "Shane, I haven't met your girlfriend; when will you introduce her to us?" her mom asked curiously. "Ooh...yes, mom, by next week, I'll introduce her to the family," Shane replied. "Dad looked at him with a satisfied look. 'We are waiting!'" After a long journey, they finally reached Manela, their new home. It wasn't big or fancy, but they loved it. As they unpacked, Kemmy wanted to explore, but Shane advised her to wait until tomorrow. "That's okay, Shane, but I'll find a way," Kemmy thought to herself. That night, Harrison confided in Kate about his concerns. "Honey, everything is just frustrating," he said. "How?" Kate asked, relaxing her back on the bed. "We have come to a new environment where I will have to go and search for a new job, which may be very hard to find. Plus, Kemmy has to start a new school by Monday. I need to get all her requirements, and if I use the money on that, how will we feed the family?" Harrison explained. Kate reassured him, "Harrison, don't worry. Everything will be fine if we believe." Harrison's past haunted him – his brothers' betrayal and cheating him out of his inheritance. "My brothers hated me because our parents loved me more. They said I didn't need anything," Harrison thought. The next day, Kemmy tricked her mom into letting her go out. "We don't have water in the house; can I get some?" Kemmy asked. Her mom gave her a questionable look. "Where do you know to get water?" "Uhmm...I'll ask around!" Kemmy replied. Her mom sighed. "Okay, Kemmy, you win! Go, but don't stay out too long, okay?" "Thanks, mom; I'll be back soon," Kemmy grinned, rushing out. Luckily, she met a girl her age passing by. "Hi...please, where can I get some water?" Kemmy asked. "Oh, it's over there!" the girl pointed. Kemmy turned, only to see a tap right behind their doorstep. Her plan was foiled. "Oh s**t! Thank you very much," Kemmy smiled awkwardly. The girl laughed. "You look like you're new here and want to explore?" Kemmy smiled sheepishly. "Is it that obvious?" The girl introduced herself. "Nice to meet you; I'm Sonia, and I live very close around here. What about you?" "I'm Kemmy, and the place you pointed is my house," Kemmy replied, shaking Sonia's hand. Kemmy and Sonia walked around, and Sonia shared that she was a house help It was getting to noon, and Kemmy had to head back home. "You come around here all the time?" Kemmy asked Sonia as they stopped walking. "I barely have time to come out because I'm a house help," Sonia replied. "I understand. I have to go home now; Mom will be waiting for me," Kemmy said, waving goodbye to Sonia. Kemmy fetched the water and returned home, relieved her mom didn't scold her for being late. "Honey, sorry to disturb you, but could you go down and get some foodstuffs for me?" her mom asked. Kemmy happily agreed and headed out. Lost in thought on her way back, Kemmy bumped into someone. "Oh s**t!" she muttered angrily. "Why can't you watch where you're going!" she exclaimed. The guy smiled, "Just take a look at my white dress! Ugh!" Kemmy retorted, "No! Blame yourself; you weren't watchful either." The guy's smile caught Kemmy off guard, leaving her momentarily speechless. "You're disgusting!" she managed to say, regaining her composure. Kemmy quickly walked away, but the guy stood watching her leave. "She's beautiful," he said to himself before walking away.
