"Here's some bread and some cheese and an Apple some oh you need some water...." Elizabeth said running around the kitchen then stopping occasionally to give Sophia an arm full of food.
"Whoa, slow down. I just need some bread and an apple." Sophia said as she sat down at the long beat up wooden table, unloading food that she held in her arms. There was no way that Sophia would eat all of this. She needed Elizabeth to stop for a minute so she could tell her that.
"Oh, very well then." Elizabeth said, stopped, then walked over to Sophia as she started to eat. She looked at her and wished that she could do something else for her. She barely knew Sophia but yet she was willing risk her life for her.
Elijah walked into the kitchen and saw the two girls at the table eating in silence. He took a breath and let it out, hoping that Sophia wouldn't be still mad at him. He trusted Sophia but he realized that he could never develop feelings for Sophia. He needed to start guarding his emotions better."There you are." Elijah said and walked up to them. Once he was up closer to them he saw that Sophia was wearing a familiar shirt. "Is that my shirt that Sophia is wearing?"
Elizabeth gave a large smile at him. It took him long enough to notice. "YES! Doesn't it look lovely on her?" Elizabeth cheered.
He frowned, it wasn't normal for women to wear men's clothing. But he had a feeling that it was common in Sophia's time because she didn't seem to mind it. "It is, well, fine, I suppose. I have to go. I'll be back in 15 minutes with Abraham." Elijah said and walked out of the kitchen.
Elizabeth frowned as he left then looked at Sophia. This was not like him, he was normally friendly. "What is wrong with him?" Elizabeth said
"So he doesn't normally act like this?"
"No."
After about 15 minutes or so Sophia was done eating and had enough time to teach Elizabeth how to play beer pong. "So kids really play that game in your time?" Elizabeth asked as she looked at all the glasses that were set up cross the table. She was starting to question the free time of the 21st century teenagers.
"Oh it quite essential to know how to play. I don't drink so I play with water or some other drink but it's fun. Next time I'm around I'll make sure to bring a ping pong ball and we can try it out." Sophia said and smiled, leaning back in her chair. She was trying her hardest to relax because she knew that soon she would be running for her life in a castle far away. She tried to not think about though, it was too stressful.
"Oh yes please do." Elizabeth said happily.
Abraham walked into the kitchen and watched the two girls talk. He watched how Elizabeth smiled and laughed when Sophia spoke. He hadn't seen her this happy in months. He found it very pleasant to see her this way. He just hoped that this personality would stay. "Are you ready?" Abraham asked to the girls with Elijah on his heels.
"Oh..." Sophia stated as her smile quickly faded away. She almost forgot that she was going to risk her own life for her sister. The time went by way too fast. An overwhelming amount of fear washed over her, as it finally clicked that she might not back, that she might get hurt or someone could die. This was not a game, this was real and Sophia just realized that fully.
She was scared of what to expect once in Lord Nelsons castle. She didn't know anything about magic, how could she protect herself? "Yes, I'm ready." She said in a somber tone and got up from her chair.
Abraham watched he personality change in a second and he realized that maybe she wasn't ready for this. She didn't have to do this, she wasn't obligated to go and he wanted to let her know that. "Very well. You know you can back out still." Abraham said kindly.
Sophia looked back at Elizabeth's fading smile then to Elijah. These people were family to her, she wanted to do anything for family. Her father told her that family was everything and she planned on doing everything for them. "No I made up my mind and I'm going."
Abraham sighed with a nod. He didn't think that there was anyway to convince her otherwise. Her grandmother was just a stubborn. "Your choice. I'm going to make a circle on the floor with coal and once the circle is complete I want both of you to get into the circle and hold hands...." He said as he got on his hands and knees on the stone kitchen to make the circle.
Sophia looked at Elijah who smiled kindly at her. Anger raged inside of her. Once again Elijah looked like her best friend, kind, polite, friendly and loyal. She couldn't say that this was the look on his face 15 minutes ago. She wanted to know why he was acting this way because it was crushing her on the inside.
"Good, it's ready." Abraham said and got up from the floor. He looked at both of the kids as if giving then one more chance to back out. He knew that they wouldn't take it though.
Sophia stepped inside the circle and Elijah followed in and grabbed her hands tightly. His hands were so warm against Sophia's and it quickly warmed hers up. He gave her hands a squeeze and then forced a smile at her. He wanted her to loosen up a little.
If only she knew that he would risk his life to save hers. If only she knew that for the past hour he had been talking to Abraham about the details of the plan. He was going to protect Sophia at all costs. She was really just here for a distraction and as soon as lord Nelson saw her, Abraham would send her back, leaving Elijah to face the beast on his own.
"You might feel a small pinch. I may be a bit rusty." Abraham said and started to chant archaic words that Sophia had never heard before.
"Hold on tight." Elijah whispered in Sophia's ear.
She did a sharp nod then all of a sudden she was flying through the air at the speed of sound then it all stopped. In a second, they were placed on the ground gently as if they never went anywhere to begin with.
Elijah looked around to see if they were where they needed to be. He saw the castle off on the distance and he knew that they were exactly where they needed to be. "We're here." Elijah said and let go of her hand.
"What?" Sophia asked and slowly opened her eyes to find that she was about a half of mile down a road to an old pretty white brick castle. The wind was warm that whipped though the grass but it still sent shivers down her spine. "This is it?"
"Yes. This is where my uncle lives." He said and started walking down the dirt road lined with big trees. He could never forget about this place and the nightmares that he had to endure here. As much as he wanted to forget, he knew that was not possible.
"It's nice." Sophia said and started walking down the road with Elijah. She looked around her as she heard birds chirp up in the trees. Her eyes caught the sliver of sun that was sinking below the horizon while the sky lit up with brilliant pinks and oranges. It was peaceful if she didn't know any better. She took a deep breath and felt the sea breeze blow through her hair and the salt-water air, tickled her nose. She was expecting Lord Nelson's house to be scary, dark, cold and not welcoming but the nature around the castle gave a false sense of safety and tranquility.
Elijah needed to prep Sophia a little before they got into the castle. She just needed to know a little bit of the information, nothing too detailed, but as much as Abraham would have liked it, Elijah didn't want her to go in blind. "This is what you need to know about the castle. Where my uncle would keep Elizabeth's sister would probably be at the basement level. We can go in through the back. It's Sunday so all the maids should be off of work today so we won't bump into anyone."
"That is fine. Elijah, we need to talk though." Sophia said. If she was going to risk her life, she wanted to clear some things up with him before they went in.
Elijah knew exactly what Sophia was wanting to talk about but he didn't want to talk about this here. "We are talking." He said, playing dumb.
Sophia shook her head at him. "No, why are you acting so oddly? Elizabeth said that it's not like to you act this way."
For a minute it was quite as he thought about what he should really say. Ever since that ball, he started to have dreams about her too. All these dreams were about her and him, having a life together then Sophia died, she always died in his dreams. He couldn't let this dream come true. As much as he wanted her, he knew that she was meant to say in her time and he was meant to stay here. If she stayed, she would die and he couldn't let that happen. Elijah finally spoke up, "I....I've dreamt about you too. The dreams just started."
"Then why didn't you tell me that?!" Sophia asked, raising her voice at him out of anger scaring some of the birds from their nests from the branches above. Panic filled his face showing that she was a little too loud just now. Sophia frowned, as if reading his mind. "Sorry. Is your dream about the cliff too?" she asked with a softer tone.
He shook his head at her. "No, I haven't had that dream. But I've had others. What is the cliff dream that you have?"
Sophia debated for a second if she should tell him but soon decided that it was worth sharing with him. If he knew then maybe he could prepare for it. "It's the only one I have, over and over again. It's not every night, just off and on. And every time I have it I get a little more into the dream."
"I've never had one like that before. What is it about?"
She frowned. This was more painful then she thought it would be. "Lord Nelson is on a cliff, with you gagged and bound and he wants to make a deal with me. The book for you and you tell me not to make the deal." She said.
"Sounds like me." He chuckled.
She frowned at him. He was taking this a little to light hearted. "And the dream always ends with you being pushed off the cliff." She said as she mumbled the ending.
He frowned as he stopped dead in his tracks. He shook his head, that couldn't happen. He was supposed to live a long life. His father said that family curse ended with him in his dying breaths. Abraham once told him that dreams sometimes foretold the future and sometimes they are meant to tell a lesson. This had to just had to be a lesson. Elijah kicked a rock down the dirt road as he thought about what to say. "That won't happen. I will make sure of it." He said, although he wasn't sure if that statement was true.
"I'm sure it's nothing." She said and for a minute it was silent. "Why did you not tell me about your dreams sooner?"
"Abraham told me too. He doesn't like me to get close to you. He says that I can't be with you because of the time difference. He keeps reminding me that you are not from my time. But the thing is I can't help falling for you." He said honestly and looked up at Sophia from the ground. He just thought how Abraham would disapprove of Elijah's actions now but right now, if they were risking their life, he didn't care what Abraham thought.
Sophia smiled at him. She felt like finally she was getting somewhere with him. He was finally being 100% honest with her. "I can't help falling for you. I find you magnetic and I can't stop gravitating closer."
He opened his mouth but quickly shut it as if he decided it was worth not sharing. There was a second of silence and he shouted out, "get down!"
Sophia quickly dropped into her stomach in the long grass with Elijah. She looked over at him with fear in her eyes. She didn't know what was going on but she could see fear in his eyes too.
Elijah looked around and noticed that the coast was clear. He had reason believe that he saw someone looking out the window. He was fearing that lord Nelson was already waiting for them. "False alarm." He said and peeked over the grass. "I thought I saw someone in the window."
"Well it's better to be safe than sorry." Sophia said as she got up from the ground and brushed herself off. She rubbed her knees. She was sure she just got bruises from dropping down so fast.
Elijah knew that they couldn't walk to the castle any longer. That was going to make them stand out too much. They needed to run and get out of sight as soon as possible. "We're going to sprint the rest of the way, is that fine?"
"That's fine. I'm ready if you're ready."
"Let's go!" He said and started to sprint to the back of the castle. He felt the air rush around him. Memories flooded from when he last ran though the castle here. He was running for his life, following Abraham. He remembered pushing the pain of the lashes on his back to the back of his mind as Lord nelson chased after them. Abraham promised Elijah a better life. Abraham lived up to his promise. That seemed so long ago to Elijah.
Once they got to the back door of the castle, Elijah said, "stay back, I need to open the door." He went over to the large wooden door and rubbed his hand over it to see if there was any traces of magic on it. He didn't feel any magic in the bones of the door so he thought it would be safe to open the door without using his magic. He remembered that Nelson kept the back door unlocked for the workers. They got into the castle easily and once they were inside, Elijah said, "I'm going to go down stairs. How about if you stay here?"
"That's fine." Sophia said and watched as Elijah rounded the corner and disappeared from view. After he was gone she looked around her the hall that she was in, it had wood panel walls with bright red rugs on the floor with lots of portraits on the walls. The inside looked even more expensive then the outside and this was only the back entrance. She was amazed that someone would put so much money into a house. This castle looked even nicer than Elizabeth's castle.
In a poof of smoke Lord Nelson appeared behind Sophia without a noise. He smiled at himself, Elijah was making this a little too easy. "There you are Sophia." Lord Nelson said from behind her.
Sophia froze in place as she heard his voice. She didn't dare to turn around to face him, she was frozen in place. Only one thought was in her mind, run, and she didn't care if Elijah said to stay. She needed to get away from him. In a split second she started to sprint up the first pair of steps she saw and darted into the first room that she found at the top of the stairs.
A young lady paced the room. She heard voices from down stairs that she had never heard before. She knew something was happening. As she took a seat on her soft bed the door opened and came running in a girl with long straight brown hair. "Who are you?" The young women said to Sophia.
"I'm Sophia." Sophia said quickly as she locked the door behind her. She hoped that lock would hold him because she didn't want him coming in. She quickly backed away from from the door and prepared for the worse. She didn't know what Nelson wanted to do but she did know she need to stay as much away from him as possible. She looked around her and saw a letter opener on a small round table and she dived to get it into her hands.
She had seen people here before in an attempt to save her. They always failed so she was done with getting her hopes up. But this girl was acting so differently than all the others though. "That's not going to do any good." The young lady said with a bored tone and got up from her bed. She walked over to Sophia and looked at her closer. Sophia looked so familiar to her, she looked like family. "You look kind of like me." She said surveying Sophia from head to toe.
Sophia stopped in her tracks to take a breather. She looked at this lady from head to toe as well. "We kind of do." She said, looking at this young women with brown strait hair and blue eyes. Come to think about it, she looked a lot like Sophia. She was just a little smaller and less tan.
"Where did you come from?" The young lady asked Sophia.
"I'm here to save Elizabeth's sister with Elijah."
"That is me. Sarah." She said and smiled, "did you say Elijah was here too?" Excitement filled Sarah as Sophia said his name. He had never tried to save her himself. Her heart swooned as she thought about Elijah, she missed him the most.
"Yes he is." Sophia said, not paying attention to Sarah.
"I knew that he would save me!"
As soon as she said this, the door flew open to reveled Lord Nelson. "Hello loves. So how do you like my house? Is it nicer than your little castle back home?" he asked and smiled widely at both of them.
"Stay back." Sophia said and took a couple steps back holding up the letter opener. He lunged for them and the first thing that came through Sophia's mind was to lung back. She plunged the letter opener into his arm as he came for her. He cried out in pain and took a few steps back.
"Now love, that was too far." He said as his smile faded. He lunged again and grabbed Sarah by the arm. She had a panicked look, fearing what he would do next to her. "Sarah, it appears that your knight and fiancé is here to save the day. Why don't you go and see him. I need to talk to Sophia, alone." After he said that, he pushed her out the door and locked it.
At this moment Sophia didn't pay attention to the fact that she was alone with Nelson. The only thing on her mind was one word, fiancé. This had to be the reason why Elijah was so distant. "Fiancé." She mouthed and sat down on the bed. Why did he tell Sophia that he liked her if she couldn't be with him anyhow. Why didn't he just say that he didn't like her and didn't want to be with her, that he was already betrothed. If he did, Sophia would have stayed away from him for good.
"Yes, my nephew is engaged. Isn't that great. However, that is not the point..." but before he could finish Sophia found a silver candle stick holder and hit him on the side of his head, enough to knock him to the ground.
She looked at him at the ground and couldn't believe that that simple action worked. "Take that!" She said and kicked him in the gut as hard as she could. She then ran to the door, unlocked it then ran out the room to find Sarah and Elijah.
Sophia had no idea where she was going. She was just hoping that she would run into someone she knew in the next minute. She didn't know how long Lord Nelson would stay down. "Elijah?! Sarah!?" Sophia yelled running through the halls.
Elijah heard Sophia yelled from behind him. He sighed, frustrated that she didn't listen to his instructions. She was so much work sometimes. "Sssh." Elijah said and grabbed her arm. He covered her mouth with the other hand and pulled her into the shadows.
Panic filled her has she didn't know who grabbed her. She hoped that it wasn't Lord Nelson out for revenge. She tried to wiggle out of the person grasp, but they pulled her into a tight hug, that was when Sophia calmed down. She looked up at this person hugging her and saw Elijah.
Rage flew through her as she saw him and then she jammed her heel into his foot. She was not in the mood to deal with him right now. He was not on her good book.
He let go immanently and grabbed his foot with his hands, "what was that about?" He hissed with a look that was confused and angry at the same time. That was uncalled for and he didn't have the time nor patience to deal with this right now.
"You didn't tell me you where engaged." Sophia hissed through her teeth and stormed off down the hall. Right now, she rather save herself if it meant staying away from him.
Panic filled through him. He didn't want her to find out this like this. He wanted to have a long talk about this and tell her this himself. It wasn't as simple as Sophia thought because he didn't love sarah. "Wait! I can explain!" He said and caught up to her.
"Save it Elijah, I don't want to hear it."
"Elijah!" Sarah said, rounding the corner of the hall. She smiled at him and hugged him then kissed him over and over again.
Sophia watched as her heart sank to the ground.
Elijah pulled out of the embrace and looked as red as a tomato. This was not what he wanted Sophia to see. "This isn't the time Sarah. We have to leave." Elijah said.
With a nod they all started running to get out of the castle.
