Chapter 1
The air was cold, it was dark and raining lightly. Sophia looked up at the sky and felt the cold drops of water hit her face lightly, causing her to shiver. She then looked around to see where she was. She'd never seen a place look so beautiful and terrifying at the same time in her life. She was on an edge of a high green grass cliff, she could hear the sound of waves beating down on the shoreline below her. She walked close to the edge of the cliff and saw that the ocean was about a mile or two below where Sophia was standing. There was something so intimidating about this place but she couldn't place it.
"Sophia, I thought you would come." A man said coming into view from the left of her.
She looked at him who was standing about 40 yards away from her. There beside him was a bound young man. The man that was struggling against the bounds looked at Sophia with such fear in his eyes. All of a sudden she felt a gut retching sorrow and pity for this young man and she didn't know why. She had never seen this man before and she was sure that she had never man so handsome in her life, he was tall and thin with brown wavy hair. But his eyes were something that stood out to her the most. His piercing green eyes was something that Sophia would never forget.
"Please, don't," Sophia said but her voice was almost inaudible against the sound of the waves pounding on the shoreline below.
The man smiled at her, ready to do something terrible to the bound man. "It's too...."
"Sophia! Sophia!" A young girl said while jumping on Sophia's bed with full force.
Suddenly Sophia felt the ground move and it causer her to shoot straight up in her bed. There right beside her, staring right back at Sophia with the blondest hair was a little girl.
Sophia frowned slightly at the girl, knowing that her dream was over. She was convinced that Eloise came up with the most creative ways to wake her up in the morning. Sophia was sure that her little sister's attempt wouldn't work this time. Sophia's bed called her name too strongly today. "Cosa vuoi Eloise?" Sophia said (which meant 'what do you want', in Italian) and rolled to her side to try to avoid her.
Eloise frowned at her older sister. She wasn't about to give up just yet. Their mum asked Eloise to wake her up and she was determined to do just that. "You have to get up for school!"
"Yeah, yeah, don't rush me." Sophia said and closed her eyes hoping to get another 10 more minutes of sleep. She didn't have a good sleep at all last night and she just wanted a little more time.
Eloise rolled up her sleeves, giving one last attempt on getting her sister out of bed. She grabbed the sheets from the bed and gave a hard tug, ripping them off of Sophia. "Mum says you have to get out of bed now or you're going to miss the bus," Eloise said as forcefully as she could.
Sophia shivered, feeling suddenly cold without the covers. With a frown she rolled back over to face Eloise. "Ok, you win." She said as she got out of bed and started to pick out her clothes for school. She looked at Eloise with a hint of anger in her eyes. Sophia had that dream for the past year off and on but she never got to the end of it. Every time she had the dream, she seemed to get closer to seeing who this bound man was. Today was the first time she was able to make out his beautifully chiseled face. She took a deep breath and pushed her anger off to the side. Eloise was only 7 and Sophia loved her to death. She couldn't stay mad at her.
She watched as Eloise bounced around the room and sang some top 40 song that Sophia didn't know. Eloise had blonde curly hair that went down to her shoulders with bright blue eyes that looked almost like the sky on a clear sunny day. And even though she was almost 10 years younger, she was Sophia's only sister and she loved to spend any time with her.
After Sophia got ready, she walked down the steps of the old creaky farmhouse to get to the kitchen with Eloise on her heals. She walked into the kitchen to see her mum, Lucy, cleaning up breakfast for her two other siblings, Alessandro and Bryce.
Lucy looked at her daughter with a frown. Sophia was always late and Lucy wasn't sure how to fix it. This wasn't the first time that she came down the steps with only minutes to spare. In a lot of ways, Sophia reminded her of herself when she was younger. "Sophia, you're late so I'm sorry but you'll just have to stick to a pop tart for breakfast." Her mum said in her British accent.
Sophia had an interesting family, her mom was from a rich, old, and powerful bloodline from England and her dad was from a quiet, simple farm family from Italy. They met at university in Rome and soon got married. Before Sophia was born, her parents hopped between England, Italy, and then finally placed roots in the United States.
Sophia shrugged at her mother. Some people would say that her mum was pretty, she was thin, with curly blonde hair and blue eyes. Eloise looked a lot like her, the most out of the kids. All of the Romano kids had different looks but one thing was for sure, they all had the same beautiful blue eyes, as blue as the Mediterranean sea, at least that was what Sophia's father would always say. "Um, I'll just stick to a yogurt," Sophia said and went into the fridge.
"You always have yogurt, when are you going to get sick of it?" Bryce said while putting his plate in the sink. He had brown wavy hair with those famous Romano blue eyes. He was 14 ½ which made him the oldest boy in the family. And him being the oldest boy made him entitled to being Mr. know it all, or at least in his mind.
She turned around to face her brother, not having the patience to deal with him at this moment. To her, it was too early in the morning to work with Bryce. "You know what I'm sick of? Your voice." She replied and got a spoon.
"Well I'm- I'm always sick of your voice," Bryce said stumbling over his words trying to think of a better comeback.
"Is that the best you got?" Sophia said eyeing him from head to toe, ready to take him if needed.
Lucy stood in the background until finding a proper moment to step in. She couldn't stand to see her kids fight. She had a feeling that it was going to be one of those days. "Bryce, Sophia, cut it out." Lucy said with her mad look to her face, which kind of looked like she was making a kissy face but also making her lips into a thin line, if that was even possible. The kids like to call this look the mad mom lips.
"He started it." Sophia said stubbornly, pointing to her brother.
Lucy threw her hands up in the air. She was so tired of this fight and she just wanted them to stop. All she wanted was to have them have a nice breakfast together as a family. "Oh for petty sakes, I don't care who started it, I just want you to finish it." she paused and looked at the time and went on to say, "Oh goodness, you missed the bus, I'll have to take you guys in."
"You know if you let me borrow the car I could drive them." Sophia said crossing her fingers behind her back hoping with all her might that she could drive to school this time. For years and years, her mum always drove her and dropped her off at the front door of her high school like a child. She could feel it in her bones, today was the day that she was going to get to drive.
Lucy thought about it for a second and then remembered all the errands she needed to do today. "I need the car though today." She said flatly.
"Please! Mum, I'm a senior and I have to be one of the only cheerleaders on the team that doesn't have a car!" Sophia pleaded with her. She knew that a lot of the team talked about this behind her back and she knew that this would make it stop.
"Well once you have enough money, you can buy your own car." Even though her mum and dad both came from a rich family, they both believed strongly in 'making it for yourself'. This meant that she had to buy all her own clothes if she wanted new ones and she would have to buy her own car. Sophia thought this was cool and all but making only $10 a week out of chores and babysitting jobs weren't cutting it, she wanted a car now.
Sophia saw this as a losing battle so she just sighed and said, "Fine."
Marco's hands shook slightly as he walked down the stairs carrying the letter he just printed out from the computer. He didn't want to have this conversation with his family not now, or ever. He read the letter at least 5 times already to help brace himself for what was going to happen next. "Sophia, Eloise, Bryce, Alessandro, we have to talk." Marco, their father said coming into the kitchen with a white letter in his hands. "I just got this e-mail and it's important."
When her dad said the last sentence, Sophia shifted her weight uneasily. There was a tone to his voice that she didn't hear often, it was stern. In the second, Sophia felt a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach.
"We got a letter from England." Marco stated and let out a breath.
"Ooh can you read it? I want to see what Gran wrote!" Eloise said excitedly. Sophia smirked at her. She was so cute with her innocence. If Eloise could remember Gran never emailed them anymore, she just texted them or used skype. No, Sophia knew that there had to be something else going on.
Her dad unfolded the printed letter and started reading,
To the Romano family,
I'm very sorry to inform you of this but Vitoria Ainsworth passed way last Friday night. I'm sorry we haven't got to you sooner but we thought this would be the most formal. The funeral will be held on September 12, 2012 imminently following that I will be reading her last will and testament.
If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to call,
Sincerely,
Aaron Hallchurch
Sophia couldn't believe her ears; she just talked to her on Friday morning. Her gran sounded completely fine, happy to talk to Sophia. Sophia looked up at her parents, who were both crying now, even her dad, Marco was shedding some tears. Sophia wanted to cry with them, a part of her thought that this must be a dream. She wondered how could have this happened. Her mind was spinning, trying to piece together the pieces, trying to figure out how this happened. Right now, it felt like someone just ripped out her heart and she couldn't feel anything but numbness.
Eloise looked at everyone confused. She was positive that this was not true. She had talked to her gran so recently. "I don't get it." Eloise said after a minute.
Bryce looked at his younger sister, not having the patience to deal with her. He knew that she was too young to understand these kinds of family matters. "Gran's dead Eloise, she's not coming back." Bryce said bluntly with a tear running down his cheek.
"Gram can't be dead though." Eloise said, her blank stare was gone and tears were falling from her eyes as she finally pieced together in her head what the letter meant with Bryce's blunt help.
"She is though, sweetheart. But it's going to be ok; we're going to be ok." Lucy said and hugged her trying to comfort her youngest daughter even though she was crying herself.
Sophia felt out of the picture, her emotions weren't coming to her, she felt in a daze. She wanted to cry or feel something, but she couldn't. So she got up from her seat and walked up the stairs to her room and got on Skype. When she got on Skype she looked through her contacts and saw that her grandma was still on the list with a green circle by her name. Sophia knew that the letter was not true because she was still on Skype. Sophia hit call and just let it ring. It rang for a good minute and Sophia slowly realized that her Gran wasn't going to answer, not now or ever. Tears started to fall now as her emotions started coming back to her. Just when she was about to end the call, it went through, but no one was in front of the camera. She just saw what was in background, which was a mound of books piled high.
"Gran, I know you are not there but, I want to talk. I just I ... You can't be gone..." Sophia couldn't think of anything more to say so she just hung up.
Marco watched as Sophia talked to no one on Skype and it killed his heart. He hated seeing his family like this. "Sophia, we need to talk again." Marco said and knocked on her bedroom door.
She did a sharp nod of her head at her father and watched him go sit down on her bed.
"Can you come downstairs so we can tell this to everyone?" Marco said softly. Sophia nodded as she got up from her chair and followed her father down the stairs back down to the living room where everyone was sitting back down again.
Once Marco and Sophia sat down her father said, "We are leaving tomorrow for England."
As soon as he said that Bryce gave a small smile and did a little fist bump in the air. Alessandro on the other hand had just a confused look to his face. But Sophia just sat there in shock. No, she didn't want to leave. She had plans for tomorrow. She had a test at school. She couldn't' leave tomorrow."What?" she managed to choke out.
"Pack your bags the plane leaves at 11 a.m."
"But I have a date with Matt." Sophia said remembering that she was going to hang out with her boyfriend tomorrow; they were going to plan for homecoming together. They were both on the homecoming court and agreed to help plan for the night that was coming up soon.
"Well I guess you'll just have to call him, won't you? And relax we're only missing a couple days of school and you should be back on Wednesday."
"Fine," Sophia mumbled and got up and started to her room. Sophia felt like she needed to go to England but everything seemed to be happening this week, voting for homecoming all this week and homecoming game on Friday and she was even going to try out for the school play on Thursday. Her life was here, and she was missing all of it.
Sophia's phone started to buzz in her back pocket and without a second to wait, she answered it with a, "Hello?"
"Hey it's Matt..." a deep voice said over the phone.
She smiled at the phone. She loved it when he called her. "Hey matt, I was just about to call you. I need to tell you something."
"Ok shoot." He said calmly.
"I'm going to England, for a few days. My Gran, she died and I have to see her funeral. I am sorry that I have to miss voting and stuff but I'll be back over here for homecoming." Sophia said all at once, the words flying out of her mouth. She was worried about what he was going to do. They had never done a long distance before.
There was a minute of silence and then he said, "It's ok. I understand. Just try to have fun, k? And I'll hold down the fort here. And I'm really sorry about your Gran. You can't stop things like this from happening. It's not your fault."
Sophia sat on her bed with her mouth hanging open. She couldn't believe how cool he was about it. This made her smile when he said that and feel even more grateful about having a boyfriend like this. She was so lucky to get him and she knew it. "Thanks."
"No problem. So when are you leaving?"
"Tomorrow, at 11 in the morning."
"Ooh, you have fun with that."
"Hey, Matt, I have to go."
"Don't say any more, I understand. Just call me tomorrow."
"I will."
