Chapter 17

"Oh my gosh! It feels like I haven't seen you in forever!" Libby said to Sophia as she opened her front door to see her standing outside. Sophia was amazed that Libby opened the door before she even had a chance to knock. She figured that Libby must have saw Sophia coming from the drive. "I saw you a couple days ago." Sophia smirked and walked into Libby's house. "So what are we going to do?" "I'm not sure." Libby said and frowned. Libby's dad wanted Sophia to come here today for what ever reason but now that Sophia was here, her dad was gone. Libby didn't know what to do with Sophia but she knew that if she let her go she would be punished by her father. "Well how have you been?" Sophia said, starting conversation, seeing that there was something on Libby's mind. "I've been so busy! Oh my gosh you wouldn't believe!" Libby said walking to her family room and sat down on a faded floral couch. Her family was way too tiring and she had been with her mother's side of the family all day. They made her drink tea and talk about traditions. It was honestly hell for her. Then after all her time with family, her dad made her do a bunch of traditional things that Libby could care less about. "Try me." Sophia smiled and sat down next to her. "Well first of all my dad is driving me insane! He is so old fashion and he believes I should be like that too. But I don't want to. Times had changed and I have too." She said honestly to her. "Like how?" "Oh just old family stuff. It is really boring, trust me!" she said dramatically and leaned back into the couch. "How has your day been going." "It's been busy! A whole bunch of boy drama. There is this boy that I like, Elijah and I thought he liked me too but then I met his soon to be wife." Sophia frowned. For as much as she cared, Elijah could rot in hell. "That's tough. What did you do when you found out?" "He wanted to talk about it but I didn't let him have a second of my time. It's not worth it." "I'm sorry. Well at least you have Lewis." Libby said and smiled. "Oh that reminds me. I have to be at his place in like 30 minutes." Sophia said as she remembered that she had to meet up with him as well. "You're really stepping up the game aren't you?" "No, more like him. I have no idea what his deal is but I'm bound to find out." Sophia said with frustration in her voice. Between Lewis and Elijah, she had just about had it with boys. England was starting to be too much work with all the drama and magic. Just when she was starting to like it here, but now, she wanted to go back to the United States. At least there, everything was calm and simple. Libby's father walked into the house from the back door. He stopped as he took off his coat as he heard voices from the family room. A smile came to his lips, proud of Libby getting Sophia here. He wanted to meet her, he wanted to see if she was as strong as her grandmother. "Olivia! Where did you go off to?" He asked with a deep voice from the back room of the house. "Father I have a friend over!" Libby yelled back and sighed as she remembered what he wanted she to say. "It never ends!" Libby rolled her eyes at Sophia. "What?" asked Libby's father as he walked into the room. He was wearing a plain white T and pair of jeans, he had short blond hair like Libby and green eyes, almost as green as the grass outside. He looked oddly familiar and Sophia couldn't place it. "Oh, hello." He said as he laid eyes on Sophia. He made sure to keep his cool, but he could feel the power radiating from Sophia. She was stronger than her grandmother ever was, he wondered if she knew this herself. If he had time he could siphon all the power out right now but that wasn't the plan. It never was. "Hello sir, I'm Sophia Romano." Sophia said polity to him and stood up from her seat. She offered a hand so he could shake it. "Ah, yes. The Romano's." He said, eyeing her hand for a second. He didn't want to touch her because of the power she had. If they touched, he was sure that she could crush him. But then again he remembered what Olivia told him, Sophia didn't know what she was. She had no idea about her family and the power they had. Even if he did touch her, she wouldn't know what was going on. "Pleased to meet you." He said and shook her hand. As they shook hands Sophia felt an electric shock go through her that caused her to jump but she just shrugged it off, knowing it was nothing. "Like wise, sir." She said politely. "So are you living in your grandmother's castle?" He asked, eyeing her from head to toe as if anticipating her to attack. He knew that this wasn't to his brothers' plan but he wanted to test her powers. He wanted to see how powerful she really was. She was a threat to his family line and family plan, just like her grandmother was, and if she didn't know anything about the family lines and magic, it was better to attack now while she was weak. Libby would be mad if she knew about this, but she didn't need to know, he could easily cast a spell that wouldn't take affect until she left the house. "Yes sir." "I'm sorry for your loss. Where you close?" He asked, as he tried to fish out any information she could spill. Her grandmother would have never stepped into his house, let alone talk to him. He was getting farther with Sophia then he ever did with Victoria. "Thank you. And kind of, I thought we were close, but I'm finding out that I wasn't as close to her as I thought." Sophia said, looking into the green eyes of Libby's father. For some reason he looked familiar. "Ah." He breathed back as if in deep thought. If he was going to attack it was going to be now. He looked at her up and down and decided that he needed to. If she lived from this spell, he would know the power she had. But if she died, his brother would hate him for it but if Sophia was out of the picture, they could come up with a new plan that was not on a time crunch. This was for his family. He patted Sophia on her shoulders and as he made connection to her, he cast a spell. Sophia didn't feel anything as he casted the spell but she did think it was odd that he patted her on the shoulder. No wonder Libby didn't talk about him much, he was kind of an odd person. "Ok dad, are you done?" Libby asked impatiently to her father. He wanted to talk to Sophia, see her, and he was done. Libby wanted him to leave so they could spend more time together. Libby thought her dad would scare her off, just like he did with many of her other friends. "Oh yeah, um, Olivia can I have a word?" her father asked, casting his gaze off Sophia, onto his daughter. "Sure." She said and smiled at Sophia reassuringly then walked down the hallway out of ears of Sophia. While Sophia was waiting for Libby to return, she sat back down on the couch and looked around the room. It was filled with two more chairs the same floral print as the couch with a flat screen TV hanging up on the middle of the wall. It was a nice family room, warm and welcoming but something was off. she turned her head to look on the side of the room where her gaze stopped on a hanging portrait of a man with electric blue eyes, blonde hair to his shoulders and a wild smile. She sat there in shock as she looked at the picture of Lord Nelson. Her mind spun with ideas on why they had this picture. Could they have won it as a prize? Gambling maybe? Maybe it's not Nelson but someone that looks a lot like him. Alternatively, maybe Lord Nelson was their great grandfather. If that was the case, could I trust them? Was Libby really my friend? Sophia thought as she stared that the portrait. She could have stared at the photo forever but what brought her down to earth was her phone that went off. With a buzz, she immediately jumped up from the couch and checked her phone to see that Lewis had texted her asking where she was. "Can he just take a chill pill?" Sophia whispered under her breath as she texted him back saying that she was at Libby's. Libby walked into the room and let out a breath. She couldn't deal with her father's old fashion personality sometimes. "Ok sorry about that. My dad can be a little needy." Libby said to Sophia. "Hey Libby who's that?" Sophia asked and pointed to the portrait of Lord Nelson. She tried to keep her voice calm but she was shaking inside. Her best friend couldn't be related to that monster. Libby frowned. She didn't want to tell her the truth about the man in the painting. She knew that if Sophia knew the truth, she would run away and Libby would lose a friend that didn't care about her family line. "Oh, him. Well, um, I really don't know. I never asked. If you ask me it's kind of creepy." Libby said and shuddered. "It's like he's looking right at you." "That's the truth." Sophia said and casted her gaze from the portrait, down to the ground. The picture a life like quality to it, it was almost like Nelson was in the same room as her. It creeped her out and she didn't want to look at it anymore. As soon as she looked down at the ground, her phone went off again, she quickly got it out of the pocket and saw that it was Lewis once again asking her when she was going to be at his place. "Who it that?" Libby asked, peering over Sophia's shoulder to read the text. "It's Lewis. Let me tell you, this is one odd boy." Sophia said while texting Lewis back. "Well if he wants you over so soon why don't you just go over. I am fine with that. I can always help my dad out. But you better tell me details tomorrow." Libby said and smiled. "Ok. I will see you tomorrow at school. Ugh, I still have to do that Time line history project by Tuesday." Sophia said with a frown, suddenly remembering all the things she needed to do. "Me too! Tell you what. After school tomorrow, come over here and we can work on it together!" She said excitedly. "Sounds like a plan." Sophia said and smiled as she got up from the couch. "Ugh." Sophia sighed and put her hand to her head. She was suddenly starting not to feel that good. She thought that maybe it was a cold that she was getting or that she was too tired, and shrugged it off. "Are you ok?" "I'm fine, my head just hurts a little. It's no big deal." "So what's the rush?" Sophia asked as she walked into Lewis's small town house. "I needed to talk to you." Lewis said as he closed the door behind him. "Well I'm here. What is it?" Sophia snapped at him, suddenly getting mad at nothing. Her head was now pounding and it was starting to effect her personality. She was mad, tired, and in pain, and just wanted to go home. "Here follow me, we can talk in the kitchen." He said leading her into the small modest kitchen. "I always like to snack when talking or watching TV. Do you want anything?" He asked Sophia as he dug around in the fridge. He was trying to get on her good side but Sophia was bit temperamental lately, it was a bit hard for him to work with her. Plus he had never really had any true friends, so making a friend as pretty as Sophia was hard. He didn't know what was normal for friends to do. This was all new grounds for him. "I want nothing from you." Sophia spat at him and stumbled backward, losing her balance. She was suddenly dizzy and couldn't think straight. "Are you ok?" Lewis asked, as concern filled his eyes. She was not acting like herself and he was worried that something happened while she was time lapsing. His family always told him that time lapsing was dangerous. "I'll be fine once I leave this place." She snapped as she hung onto the wall for support. She was not feeling good and she didn't know why. It scared her but for some reason she was physically not able to talk about it. "Sophia, what's wrong, really?" Lewis asked as he walked up to her. "Nothing!" she said and ran her fingers through her hair. She was panicking. She needed help and she didn't know what was wrong with her. Lewis frowned as he watched her quickly spiral out of control. He had been around a lot of curses to know when to see one. "What's that?" He asked and took her hand and flipped it over to reveal the underside of her arm. On her wrist, her veins had a blackish huge to them. They looked sickly. Lewis had seen this curse before, it required a lot of power to heal her and Lewis wasn't sure if he had the power to help. "This is not good." He frowned She saw her arm and freaked out even more. She didn't know what was happening to her but her veins felt like they were on fire. "Lewis, it hurts." Sophia said mumbled at him with worry in her eyes as she looked at her wrist. She was feeling worse by the second and she just wanted it all to stop. He tried to calm his mind. If he was going to help her, he needed to think clearly. He wanted to do all he could to save her from this but he knew that he only had minutes to work until time ran out. "Let's get you to the couch." He said kindly holding back the fear in his eyes. "Ok." she breathed and passed out in his arms. Lewis frowned as he looked at Sophia. "Great. This is not good at all." Lewis mumbled as he carried her to the couch. "You're going to be ok." He said to Sophia and brushed some hair from her face as if she could hear him. He looked at her and felt his heart swell. Ever since he saw her in that French class, he felt a pull to her that he couldn't explain. That had never happened to him before. He started to think that he was starting to develop feelings for her. He didn't want her to die. He couldn't have her blood on his hands. He needed to save her. Knowing that he couldn't do this alone, he called his dad and mum down from up stairs. He needed help from people that knew this magic better than he did. Hearing the fear in their son's voice, Lewis' parents flew down the stairs to see their son kneeling right beside a sleeping girl covered in sweat. As soon as they stepped into the room, his father felt the darkness of a curse around her. "She's cursed." Lewis's Father said and knelt down right next to Sophia. "Look at this." Lewis said and flipped over her arm to reveal the black veins creeping up her arm. He frowned at the sight. He had seen this before but not for years. The curse was a fast killer if not treated quickly enough. The last time he had seen this, the cursed person died before the spell was lifted. "I've seen this only once before. We don't have much time." As if knowing exactly what was needed of her, Lewis' mum spoke up, "I'll get my stuff." With that, she ran down stairs to get her herbs and spices. "Who did this to her? And who is she?" Lewis's Father asked and looked up at Lewis. This spell was serious, he wanted to know what this girl did to deserve this. He had told Lewis time and time again to keep his distance from the other family lines. Seeing this, he knew that Lewis wasn't listening. Lewis looked at Sophia and frowned. His father was not going to be happy with him when he finds out who she was, but he needed to know. "She's a Guarder, a pretty clueless on at that. I don't think Victoria taught her anything about Guarding." Lewis said. "She's a Romano." He nodded at his son, suddenly things were clicking into place for him. "Who would do this to her?" "The Harlow's." Lewis said bluntly as if he was positive that they were the only people that would do this. He didn't trust any of the Harlow's, not even Libby. They had broken their families trust too many times. Well, Libby hadn't, but Lewis wasn't going to give Libby the chance to do that. The Harlow's were all snakes to him. They were the only people in the world that would want to kill Sophia. "Now Lewis, even though they are Baygonens doesn't mean they're all bad. People can change and he's even told me that himself. We don't live in the stone ages anymore." Lewis father said sternly. He was willing to forgive the family for all the things they have done in the past. "So you're going to believe him just because he said he's changed? No dad, I know Libby's dad is up to something. I can feel it every time I'm at her house." he frowned, disappointed that Lewis had even visited their house. There was a reason why he didn't want his son into this, he was too young for all of this. "Well, we'll work on that later. Let's just focus on this." Lewis mum said with an armful of jars. She put them down on the coffee table then she looked at Sophia's arm to see the black veins had reached half way up her arm. "This is spreading fast. Lewis, I need you to remember all the things she told you." she said with calmness on her voice. "She got mad at me for nothing, and then she got dizzy and then passed out." Lewis said. "Ok, Stefan I need you get the hazel leaves." Lewis's mother said to Lewis' father and then whispered something in Sophia's ear. "I want to help." Lewis said as he watched his mother and father work on grinding herbs in a dish. "Lewis." She sighed not even looking at him. She couldn't let him help with this. It was too dangerous. "No mum. I want to help. I can do it. she's my friend." She sighed, knowing that he would not back down. "Ok when we give this mixture to her I need you to read an enchantment."
