Chapter 4

"Wake up Sophia!" Eloise said jumping on her bed in the way early morning. "Why?" Sophia mumbled and pulled the covers over her head, not willing to wake up anytime soon. She was determined to spend all day in bed to show how unhappy she was with being here. "Because it's your first day at school!" Eloise cheered to her. Eloise was more than excited to get to school and she wanted to make Sophia feel her excitement. She let out a deep sigh. Sophia almost forgot about that. "Yeah..." Sophia said and got out of bed. She couldn't believe a week had gone by since she left her home in the states. Now she was going to go to her first day of school in England. She was terrified. In the states she had everything she wanted, she spent years building that up, and now, she had to start with nothing. She didn't want to move out of the bed but she knew she had to go she got ready. She didn't put much effort into her outfit and soon shuffled her feet down the stairs to see her mum reading the newspaper and her dad talking to one of the maids. "I'm so excited for the first day of SCHOoOoOL" Eloise said jumping up and down around the kitchen. Sophia gave a small smile from this. Eloise was cute, even if she could be annoying at times. "Did you just smile? Miss my life is ruined and I'm never going to smile until to get back to my real home?" Alessandro said coming up to Sophia. Sophia blushed and quickly changed the smile to a straight face. She wasn't about to break her front just yet. "No." "No, I think I saw that too." Bryce said and smiled at her, wanting any excuse to tease her. "Whatever." Sophia said and grabbed some toast and sat at the table next to her mother. "Sophia, there is something in Grans will that you should read." Lucy said and put down her newspaper and looked at her daughter who was dressed in a T and sweats. She frowned at her daughter choice in clothes. "And what are you wearing? Go upstairs and change, that is not acceptable for your first day." She said and shooed her daughter off. She was determined to have all the Romano kids in tip-top shape for the first day of school. She wanted the town to say only good things about the Romano family. "Fine." Sophia mumbled and got up and walked back upstairs to change her outfit. Abraham saw Sophia walking up the stairs with a sour look. He had noticed her only giving sour looks recently. Victoria wanted him to make sure fit in better to this life, but he had no idea how to go about that. "Good luck on your first day." Abraham said as Sophia passed him. "Yeah, whatever. I just can't wait to leave this place." he stopped in his tracks. She didn't mean that, he was sure of it, but it still hurt. "But this place is amazing, it's magical, you just need to open your eyes to it." "If you say so Abraham." Sophia said and walked into her room. She walked over to her suitcase she and dug through it and found a white V-neck shirt with a light purple ruffle skirt that came up about 3 inches above her knees, she put in some gold stud earrings but her eyes stopped at her dresser. There were a couple pieces of jewelry she had but only one thing stuck out to her, the gold ring she found in the dirt over a week ago. She had never worn it but for some reason, she felt a need to keep it with her all the time and since she didn't have pockets, she thought maybe she should wear it. She reached for it and put it on her ring finger to see if it would fit. To her surprise it did. She held it out on her hand to admire it as it caught a sunbeam and glittered. It was as if it was just bought from a*****e. With a small smile she smoothed out her skirt and walked back down stairs. "Is this better?" Sophia said to her mum once she got to the kitchen. Lucy smiled at her daughter as she looked at her outfit. She knew that Sophia could look beautiful if she tried. She noticed a gold ring on her hand, she was pretty sure that she had seen that ring before. She just couldn't remember where she saw it, but it had been years since that moment, it couldn't be the same ring. "Much. And where did you get that ring? Did gran get it for you?" "Um yeah, I don't wear it much because I don't want to get it dirty." Sophia lied quickly and put her hand behind her back so her mum wouldn't get a clear view of it. "Alright, so what did you wanted. Now show me. And why are you still in your PJ's you have to take us in you know." She smiled again, and said, "No I'm not. Dads going to take you in today. But here read this line." She gave Sophia the will. Sophia took it and read the line, 'to my dear Sophia, I hate ripping you away from your friends but some things are just necessary. And I hope someday you'll forgive me. I know this won't make everything better but I give to you my car.' Sophia put down the paper and smiled a huge smile, the first time in a week. "I thought you weren't going to smile anymore." Lucy said and smiled. "This stay just got better, I got a CAR!" she said and did a quick little dance. "You can't drive it yet, we need to set up forms so it's not illegal." Marco cut in. "Ok, that's fine." Sophia said still smiling. She could handle that. She was just happy that her gran understood her, even in her will, she got Sophia. And that was why she loved gran so much. "Oh man look at the time, we got to go kids!" Marco said getting the keys from the white and black sparkling granite counter top in the kitchen. Before they knew it, Marco was walking his two oldest kids to the school office where they got their papers and information about their classes. While Marco laughed with the secretaries, Sophia couldn't help but feel more intimidated by the passing second. This school was so posh than anything she was used to. She knew that she couldn't fit in here. While her brother could barely hold his excitement. He was looking for a change and this was just what he needed. After they got all of the information sorted out, Marco said his goodbyes to them and took Eloise and Alessandro to their school, down the road. "I can't believe that today is everyone's first day of school." Bryce said looking at the paper of his classes that he had for the new school year. He was referring to the fact that this school has not started but in the states, they had already been going for two weeks already. "I know it's kind of weird." Sophia said. "But hey Bryce, I have classes across the street, so I'll see you later." Sophia waved and walked outside. Lucky for her the was sunny and it was somewhat warm, she would have liked it warmer though but she couldn't complain. This was great weather for England. She walked into the large brick building to see that it looked just like a normal high school, there were lockers on both sides of the wall with school color murals on the wall. The floor was the same nice shade of white and black tile bricks the same color as her new 'home'. She still refused to call it her home, she wouldn't, it was Gran's home, not hers. It was never going to be hers. "Sophia?" a familiar voice asked from behind her, snapping her out of her thoughts. Sophia turned around to see the short blonde haired Libby with a floral short sleeve top dress that covered a little less than half her thighs. To cover her thin legs, she wore a pair of black tights. "Hey." Sophia said and smiled. "I didn't think I would see you anytime soon, let alone in my school. What's going on?" Libby asked. In reality, she wanted to know if Sophia was going to be attending this school with her. "We now own the castle but we don't really want to leave the states so we're going to try to rent it out. But it needs to get ready for that. So in the meantime, we're going to live here so I need to go to school here." "Very cool. What are your classes? Here can I see your paper." Libby said and took her paper and quickly looked over it without waiting for a response from Sophia. "Cool we have 3 classes together, French, British litt., and theatre." She said and smiled. "Sweet, so um, where is everyone?" Sophia said looking around the hall. It was deserted besides her and Libby. It gave this school an eerie feeling that Sophia wasn't a fan of. "Well, we're 30 minutes early. No one comes this early. Most people come 5 minutes early, just enough time to get to their classes." She nodded at Libby. "So why are you here so early?" "My dad had to go into London today so he just dropped me off." Libby said and shrugged as if it wasn't a big deal. "Here, since no one is here I'll give you the grand tour." She said and took Sophia by the hand and started to walk her down the hall. After the tour, they walked into their first class, French together and they were the first people in except the teacher of course. "Miss Harlow, may I ask who this is?" The teacher asked. The man was old with a thinning hairline. He looked like he was all most from one of this murder mystery shows on PBS late at night. It gave Sophia the creeps and he rubbed Libby the wrong way too, but she wasn't about to tell that to Sophia. She didn't want to mess up her first day. "Oh I'm new..." He said cut her off, "oh miss... Romano. " His voice was smooth and low as he said her last name as if he was thinking about it. "Yeah, Sophia Romano." Sophia said and held out her hand to shake his. He eyed for a second as if her handshake would kill him and said, "Why don't you find a seat." He turned to face the chalkboard and started writing, without even shaking her hand. "What's wrong with him?" Sophia whispered to Libby as they walked off to find a seat. "I don't know. Maybe he needs to warm up to the new school year." She said kindly. But both thought that he was weird and his room seemed to emanate this weird feeling that Sophia didn't like, it gave her the shivers. A couple of minutes later a couple girls came in and said hello to Libby and Libby introduced Sophia to them. Soon afterward, more people started to file in and take seats. The bell rang and the teacher turned around to talk to his class. "As you might have noticed we have a couple of new people in the class so we're going to start off introducing each other in French as a warm-up. Libby why don't you start, say your name and what you like to do." Sophia looked at Libby and Libby looked at her, both showing worried faces at each other. She opened her mouth and started to say, "Je...." But she was cut off by a boy that ran into class late. He had sandy blonde hair with a Hollister shirt so tight you could see his mussels. He looked like he could be a model for Hollister himself. "Mr. Reed, you know the bell was rung. Let's not make this a habit." "I'm sorry..." he said out of breath, trying to catch his breath. He walked over and sat at the only seat available, right next to Sophia. He looked over at her and gave a small smile. She quickly looked away at Libby. Libby gave her a wink and then said her name in French. The rest of the class when by so fast and before they knew it, it was time for the next class. "Hey Sophia, can you get to your next class?" Libby asked after French was over. She forgot she had to work in the Library for the next period and if she was late, she could get a lower grade in the class. "Um....yeah...I think...." Sophia said unsure of herself, trying to remember where it was again. She knew that it was a bit concerned to leave Sophia alone but she needed to get to that library in time. She also noticed Lewis looking at her the whole time. She knew that he would never talk to her if Libby was around, so her leaving was doing Sophia a favor. "Great. I'll see you at lunch." Libby said and walked out with some of her school friends, leaving Sophia alone. Sophia picked up her books and walked out of the room. She looked back at the room number as she started down the hall so she could go back to this place if she got lost. As she took another step forward and ran into the Hollister kid. "I'm sorry." Sophia said and blushed, almost dropping her books on his and her feet. She wondered why she was so klutzy at the most inopportune times. "No big deal, hey um, I didn't get your name." He said and gave a smile. He knew as soon as he walked into that classroom that she was Victoria's granddaughter. He could feel the energy she gave off and she looked like her grandmother in the old photos he has seen. He wanted to know if she was like her in personality as well. If soon he wanted her with him instead of against him. "Oh it's Sophia Romano." She said and got a better hold of her books so they wouldn't fall. He smiled lightly at her. She was pretty and he didn't think that often about other girls. "Sophia....nice name. My name is Lewis by the way." He said and held out his hand to shake hers. She shook his hand and he went on to say, "So you're new?" "Yeah, I'm here from the states, Virginia." He racked his head with what to say next to her. He was never very good at talking to people, let alone people from his age group. "Very cool. So what classes do you have?" She said all the classes she had and found out that she had two classes with him and he volunteered to take her to her next class. They talked all the way to her class and she found out that he lived in that states for a bit. He was the same age as her and he was on the school football team (soccer that is). The rest of the morning went in a blur and before Sophia knew it, she and Libby were sitting at a table together for lunch. "So, you think Lewis is cute?" Libby asked Sophia at lunch. She was always up to get the latest gossip on the boys, and this would brighten up her day if Sophia were to share. What Sophia didn't know what that she was already talk of the school, Lewis never talked to anyone. "I, well, yeah, he's cute and nice. What is he like?" Sophia said picking the pepperoni off her pizza. Libby frowned. She had to be careful not to say too much, after all it wasn't sure place to share. "Well, he's a bit of a loner, I don't know much about him. And he doesn't have too many friends, at least that go to this school. Nevertheless, for what it's worth, I've never seen him come up to a girl like that, let alone the new girl. You must be something special Sophia." Libby said and smiled. Sophia didn't say anything but she smiled a Libby. Already she seemed to forget more about Matt in the states as she thought about Lewis. She liked Lewis already and she wanted to know more about him. Being a loner just made her want him even more. It was like the hardest things were the things that she wanted most. She looked as Sophia picked the last pepperoni off her pizza. Her eyes caught glimpse of the ruby ring on her finger. She had seen that ring before in a book she read before. Victoria told her about the ring and how old it was and how it had been lost in time. She also remembered how this ring picked its wearer. "Sophia? Where did you get your ring?" Libby asked looking at it, snapping her out of her thoughts. "I just, um, my Gran gave it to me." she lied again. She didn't want to turn this ring in and she thought she better stick to the same lie that she told her mum. She frowned. She knew that her gran didn't give her this ring because it wasn't hers to give. Libby didn't think that Sophia was supposed to be the one to wear it. "That cool." She said as the same happy smile returned to her bright face. "Yeah, I like it." Sophia said and smiled back at her.
