"That can't be. It's not possible. I was at my house and..." Sophia looked around the room trying to find that book that was on the table. Her eyes stopped at a leather bound book that looked only about 3 years old but had the same design on it as the one that sent her here. "And this book took me here." Sophia said and pointed to the book.
"You came from that?" The other girl asked in amazement. She smiled slightly. She thought it might work, but she didn't know that it would work so fast. This girl was exactly what Elizabeth needed at this moment.
Sophia nodded. "Yes." She couldn't believe but one thing was for sure, she was here and she didn't know why or how to return.
"You mean to say it worked?" Elizabeth said with a huge smile coming to her face. She never actually thought it would work, calling someone from the future like this. She thought only elders had that power.
"Yeah...I guess." Sophia said with confusion in her voice. She was confused why this girl standing in front of her was so excited that she was here. This went against logic, how could this be a happy moment?
"My goodness! I can't believe it! You must be here to help me!" She said and smiled.
"Can you please tell me what you're talking about?"
"Oh not now, we need to get you out of those clothes before my mum finds you like this. Come, follow me." She and started to walk out the door of the library. Sophia stood in the library for a second as she debated whether or not to follow. It didn't take her long to decide that this girl was probably a safe to follow.
After she helped this girl Sophia thought that maybe she could get Sophia back to her proper time. So Sophia followed the girl, looking around as the girl lead her through halls and up the grand staircase. Everything looked so different, there weren't the nice paintings on the walls and the halls weren't even painted, they were just gray stone. It gave a cold dark feeling even though it was summer. The girl led her to a room that looked all too familiar to Sophia, it was her room in her time.
"Is this your room?" Sophia asked as she walked in. It looked a little different but the bed was in the same place and it was still the 4-poster bed that Sophia had.
"Yes, of course." The girl, Elizabeth said looking around her room as if trying to find something.
"Um, Elizabeth, how old are you?"
"15." She said proudly. "Ah found it. This isn't mine but I think it'll fit you." Elizabeth said and gave her a long white dress to wear.
"Thanks." Sophia said and took the dress.
After she was done changing, she looked at herself in a mirror that was shoved in the corner of the room. Sophia's mouth almost dropped to the ground. The dress was as if it was made for her. It fit perfectly and the color complemented her skin tone and make her eyes sparkle in the light.
"You look well in it. You look almost like my sister." Elizabeth said, as she thought about her words and what to say properly to her.
Sophia turned to Elizabeth and frowned, suddenly remembering that she was stuck in the past. She was positive that she was going to miss dinner, and what would her mom think about that? "Thanks but I don't know why I'm here or how I got here, can you please tell me?"
"Yes but of course. I am not completely sure how you got here either so we will need to talk to someone that does know. Follow me please." She lied partly. She kind of knew how she got her here, but she was positive that she didn't know how to send her back. Elizabeth walked out of her room and walked down the stairs but ran into someone that Sophia believed that has seen before.
"Elizabeth, who is this?" The beautiful women with blonde hair just like Elizabeth's asked. The only difference in the hair was that this lady had hers hanging by her sides instead of in a loose bun.
"It is my friend, from, the next town over Mum. She is here for a visit." Elizabeth lied quickly, just praying that her mother wouldn't see past her lie. Sophia thought for a second about telling her the truth, maybe she could help return her back, but she decided that it might not be the best idea right now. What if she made Sophia stay here longer than she had to? No, she was going to wait until Elizabeth brought her back.
The mother looked her daughter up and down then nodded. "Very well then, I will not keep you." And with that Elizabeth's mum left them.
She and Sophia walked down to the busy kitchen. The kitchen was bigger than the kitchen in Sophia's time. It was also much busier here, with people running from one end to the other, smells came from all directions and made Sophia and Elizabeth's mouth water. Sophia liked the commotion and the smells coming from this place. While Sophia looked to see what the cooks where making, Elizabeth went up to the cook and whispered something in his ear quickly. He stopped what he was making and then whispered something back to her. She came back to Sophia and said, "The man we need to talk to bring you back to your time is not here. He's on a trip, and no one knows when he will be back. But in the meantime can you help me?"
Sophia frowned. She had a feeling that she wouldn't be able to leave this time period any time soon. Sophia felt excitement in her bones as she walked around the castle but at the same time she had a feeling that this wasn't right, that she shouldn't be here. But she couldn't help but feel that this was all a dream. "Um, sure. What do you need?"
"Everyone knows that we are having a huge ball next week, I have to give a speech and play a song on the piano. It has to be unique. I don't know what to do." She pouted.
Sophia gave a sigh in relief, glad that this request she could actually help with. "Of course I'll help you," Sophia said kindly.
"Fantastic! Come with me!" Elizabeth said and grabbed Sophia's hand and led her to the ballroom. The ballroom looked almost the same but instead of just white walls with patterns cut into the wood paneling, the patterns in the wood were outlined in gold. This room looked more beautiful than what this room looked like in her time. She looked around, taking everything in, but she was most amazed by the beauty of how the chandelier in the room. It would shine on the gold patterns, making the gold dance on the wood floor.
Elizabeth walked over to the grand piano and started playing this beautiful tune that was jazzy at the beginning and changed to a slow graceful beet. "And this is where I get stuck." Elizabeth said and stopped just when the song couldn't get any better.
"That's breathtaking." Sophia said in awe.
"Thank you but I just don't know what to write next. Can you help?"
"Um...I'm not too good at making up songs, I just play them." Sophia said shaking her head. She had been playing for over 8 years but she liked to read sheet music not make it up. She was no good at making up music of the spot. "Wait and how did you know I played?"
Elizabeth looked at Sophia's hands. She knew a musician anywhere. "It's your hands." She said and started playing with the keys.
Sophia sighed, still not believing that she was helping a girl write a song in the 1800s. "Here move over, let me give it a try." Sophia said and sat on the bench. She put her hands on the piano and started to play what she thought was the ending of Elizabeth's song. When she reached the end she started play cords to transfer to a Coldplay song she loved, 'Postcards from far away' it seemed to fit so perfect with it, like a missing puzzle piece.
"That's lovely. Did you just make that up?" Elizabeth said excitedly.
The sun hit the chandelier again, lighting up the gold flecks on the wall. A light summer gust of wind came in and made the room warm. Sophia closed her eyes as she played, lost in her own thoughts. "No but I like that song."
"May I use it?"
She looked at Elizabeth and shrugged. She didn't see any harm in that. "Sure. Go for it."
"That was easy, now, can you help me with the speech?"
"Well yeah, but what time is it?" Sophia asked, she didn't know what time it would be when she got home but here the sun was starting to set. She knew that she should get back to her time soon, if not her parents would start to ask questions and how could Sophia explain this to them? They would think she was crazy for sure.
Elizabeth looked at a clock in the corner of the room for the time. "Oh my! It's 7 already. I need to do some chores before bed!"
"And I need to go back home." Sophia said and got up from the piano bench. She couldn't risk staying here any longer. Her parents will be worring about her for sure.
Elizabeth frowned at her new friend. She didn't want her to leave. Unlike Victoria, her granddaughter, Sophia, actually spent time with her. "You'll be back, right?"
Sophia was sure this was all a dream. How could she ever come back to this place? That was not possible. Time travel was not possible. "Yeah sure." She shrugged, humoring her, knowing that Sophia would never come back.
Elizabeth was so excited to hear that Sophia would come back. This was a start to a great friendship, she was sure of it. "Come to the ball. It won't be the same without you. You helped me with this song."
"Ok, I'll be here." Sophia said and smiled.
"Next Friday, come at 4 so you can get ready. I have a good dress for you."
"I'll be here." She lied and followed Elizabeth out of the ballroom.
"Oh and can you help me with the speech too? So maybe in a couple days come over again?"
"I'll try to be here." Sophia said, running this lie deeper into the ground. If this was all a dream, how did it feel so real to her? She suddenly felt guilty about lying to Elizabeth, knowing that she was getting her hopes up for nothing.
Elizabeth took a step up the stairs. "Thanks so much for helping me. Do you know how to go back home?" Elizabeth asked. She knew that she would never have the power to return her back, but she was sure Sophia could figure it out on her own. After all Victoria came and went to this time as she pleased.
Sophia looked down the dark hall and frowned. She had no idea how she got here, let alone how to get back, but it seemed that Elizabeth was too busy to show her herself, so Sophia didn't have a choice. She had to at least try to get back on her own. "I think, but I really didn't know how I got here in the first place so, I can just try."
"Very well, let me know if I can help." Elizabeth said and took another step up the stairs.
"Alright, thanks." Sophia said and waved goodbye then started walking back to the library. She couldn't believe that this was her house now. The castle now looked very different from what it looked like at her time. She touched the stone wall as she walked and remembered that she left her clothes in Elizabeth's room. She couldn't return home like this. She turned around on her heels and started to walk back up the stairs but in the process, she ran into a middle-aged man with blonde hair.
"Oh I'm sorry." Sophia muttered and then looked right into his blue piercing eyes. Her mouth dropped a centimeter. He was beautiful.
He looked down at this brown haired girl and frowned. She looked so much like her grandmother. She shouldn't be here. Her grandmother wouldn't have wanted her to come so soon. This girl couldn't fix anything that the grandmother hadn't tried already. "This isn't your time."
"Yeah, it's late I must be going." Sophia said trying to not know what he was talking about. Did she really stand out that much?
"Don't mess with time Sophia. Bad things can happen." He said sternly.
She held back amazement that he knew her name. As he looked down at her, Sophia felt uneasy, but at the same time, she felt sad and she couldn't explain it. There was something about him that Sophia knew all to well and she couldn't place it. "I don't know what you're talking about." Sophia said quickly then ran down the hall as fast as she could to get into the library.
She closed the door behind her and found the book at the same place she had left it. She ran to it and picked it up. As soon as she picked up the book, it flew open just like that last time and before she knew it she was in the library in 2012.
"Sophia, oh there you are. You know it's time for bed and please tell me why you're dressed like that?" Lucy said coming into the room from the hall.
Sophia looked down at herself to see that she was dressed in the same dress that Elizabeth gave her. Sophia smiled at her mother. She couldn't believe that she was back. It worked and it was easy to get back. "It's a long story."
Sophia walked down the brightly lit halls, up the dark wood stairs then got changed and got into her room in 2012. She could barely process what happened. It felt like a dream. It had to be a dream.
