Chapter 2
The memory of the stranger lingered in Lara's mind long after he disappeared into the night.
She couldn't explain the connection she felt, but it was as if their eyes had locked in a way
that transcended words. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw his piercing brown gaze,
and her heart skipped a beat.
Val's voice interrupted her thoughts.
“So I am thinking of entering a partnership with them.” He licked his ice cream and
continued. “This way may be beneficial for my company”
“Mm yes it might be beneficial. You are intelligent. You will do what is best” she slurped on
her ice-cream
“Thanks Lara, is Arachne home?”
“Mm” she nodded
“Well let's get some ice cream for her then”
“I don't know if she takes ice cream” she wiped the sides of her lips.
“All the better then you would eat them later on” he whispered to her and cackled
immediately, his brown curly hair flew with him as he laughed.
They got to her house, and Arachne had made pancakes for dinner. She greeted them and
led the way to the living room.
“Delicious as always, Val hugged Arachne”
“Oh stop it, you haven't even eaten it yet” the older woman blushed.
“Well I know you make the best food around here” he said confidently.
“Thank you. Will you join us for dinner?
“No, it is late. I have to go” he said sadly
“Well I will pack one for you to go” she smiled at him
“I should go use the restroom. I will be back” she had been pressed and hadn't gotten the
chance of a bathroom break.
They both nodded their heads. A few steps away from the living room, she head them
discussing in hush tunes, she smiled and went to her room. She used the restroom and
came back.
They were together by the sink as Arachne packed his dinner. When their gazes landed on
her, they laughed.
“What are you guys gossiping about?”
“You my dear” Val answered mischievously while blinking slowly
Arachne laughed, “ He was telling me about his business.”
“Oh okay let me walk you out then”
“Thank you, Arachne, see you soon.”
“See you, my dear.”
Outside her cottage. Val had called a lift,
“Why didn't you drive today?”
“Didn't feel like it.” he replied.
“Okay.”
“Lara, if you run into any trouble, you have to let me know. By tomorrow I am going to pick you
up and you begin self-defense classes.”
“I don't think I need those.”
“You have to learn to defend yourself, Lara,” he argued.
“I don't think I was built that way.” her voice cracked “I get scared so easily, and I am always
agitated. You know me, Val. I don't think I can do it.” Tears rolled down her cheeks as she
remembered the touches of various men that harassed her. “I am sorry for putting you in a
situation where you always have to save me.”
He ran a soothing touch with his palms across her upper back “I don't mind being here for
you Lara. That is what friends are for, but I know that you can stand up for yourself. I want
you to be safe and not be scared. I want you to grow out of it.”
She initiated a hug with him, and she cleaned her tears and nodded in understanding.
“ If you want, you can track all those disgusting men and kill them if you like” He laughed
She smiled and waved at him as he left, but deep inside of her, she didn't mind the idea of
doing that. She dreamt about tracking those men and torturing them one by one.
“As the days passed, Lara found herself glancing around the bar, hoping to catch a glimpse
of the stranger. But he was nowhere to be found, and she began to wonder if she had
imagined the whole encounter. Maybe she had been so caught up in the chaos of the bar
that she had mistaken a random customer for someone special.
But the memory of his eyes lingered, haunting her like a ghost. Lara couldn't shake the
feeling that she had missed an opportunity, that she had let something special slip through
her fingers.
Why was she so hung up on the thoughts of the guy?
The next day, she attended the self-defense classes with Val it had been a week now, but she
showed no improvement. But she kept coming for the sake of Val. He was her best friend
and he had cared for her from the day she met him when she was 14. Since then, they had
been friends, and she cared about him, and this was a way to show him that she was bent on
growing out of her timid character.
Her shift was for the afternoon, but she was late. She hiked all the way to the bar, and Kael
didn't bat an eye at her he went to his office, and she was met by Aria managing the bar all
by herself. A lot of customers surrounded her ordering for drinks and complaining that she
was too slow. She hurriedly rushed to her aid, apologising to her. She helped her attend to the
customers, served the drinks, cleaned up the mess, and soon. The afternoon rush was over
and Aria finally exhaled loudly.
“I am so tired Lara my back hurts” she stretched to the side, trying to relieve her ache
“I will massage you properly later,” Lara replied. Rubbing her friends upper back and
shoulders “I am so sorry for being late”
“Mm, you were with Val, I am sure.” Aria moaned at the relief
“Yes I was with him. He enrolled me in a self-defense class” she kept up with the motions on
Aria’s back.
“Very thoughtful,” her friend replied.
“Aria!!” Lara pulled at her black straight hair.
“What!” she exclaimed. The pull had hurt her, yet she still spoke, turning to face Lara. “ Let's
not pretend. He likes you!”
“He is just being caring and nice. I have known him since I was 14”
With her hands on her waist. “Hmm you have known me since you were 8”
Funny thing was Lara couldn't remember anything before she turned 14. Yet Aria told her
They have known each other longer. She has no memories of playing with her as a little girl. She knows Arachne adopted her, but she wasn't sure who her real parents were.
Arachne told her that she, Aria, and Lyra played when they were little. The older lady didn't
know her parents she just met her by an orphanage and took her in when she was 8 years
old and Aria claims they have been friends since then.
“Yes yes you are my best friend. No one is taking your place.”
“No one!” Aria laughed and hugged her. The classes are good for you, though. We are
going out this Saturday”
“Oh yes, today was Friday. She had totally forgotten.”
“I won't forget” she promised
The two friends went on laughing and discussing.
“Hey excuse me, can I get a few drinks sent to my table?”
Lara's stare went from Aria to the stranger she had met that night. His brown eyes, his grey
hair. He had come to the bar again. They locked eyes before his gaze moved away.
“Yes, what do you need?” Aria exclaimed happily
“Cocktails”
“Coming right up” she responded enthusiastically, smiling back at the stranger.
He nodded and left “Well that is my que” Aria squealed excitedly
“You are never so happy to serve drinks” Lara took out a rag to wipe the tiled surface.
“Oh common that guy is hot. Maybe I will get his number” Aria went on to get the cocktails
ready.
Lara kept wiping the bar counter while glancing at the stranger's companions. He was with
three other people, two guys and a brunette. She clung to his arm while he conversed with
the two guys. Aria served her drinks and wasn't fazed by the daggers the brunette threw her
way.
They left after a while, and Lara kept thinking of those brown eyes. She smiled today, and no
one had caused any trouble. Aria was with her, and she had met the stranger again.
The gray-haired man came a few times with his companions. Most times, another guy joined
and this guy had the same physical features as the brown eyed stranger. She guessed
They were brothers.
Today, she was sitting on one of the tables when he and his company walked in. The brunette was at his side. Emily attended to them. They looked gazes again, and she smiled at him and returned her focus to the pretty blonde sitting in front of her.
“So that is why you can't notice that I cut my blonde hair short. “
“Huh what do you mean Lyra”
“I mean, who's the hot guy? Does he like you?”
“Breathe, no, he is just a regular” she tried to hide her smile. “Also I love your hair”
“Thank you, and he has certainly made an impression” Lyra stared at her with a knowing glance.
“Of course he has,” she agreed, turning back to catch the eye of the stranger.
He smiled back at her, and she felt her cheeks redden.
One evening, as she was closing up the bar, Lara noticed a familiar figure standing outside. It was the stranger, his eyes fixed intently on hers. Lara's heart skipped a beat as their gazes met, and she felt like she was melting into his eyes.
"Lara," he said, his deep voice sending shivers down her spine. "May I walk you home?"
Lara hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to make of the stranger's request. But there was something about him that put her at ease, something that made her feel like she could trust him with her life. She nodded, and the stranger smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners.
As they walked, the stranger asked her questions about her life, listening intently to her responses. Lara found herself opening up to him in ways she didn't think she could. She told him about her job at the bar, her friends Lyra and Aria.
The stranger listened attentively, his eyes never leaving hers. Lara felt like he was seeing her, really seeing her, for the first time in her life.
When they reached her house, the stranger turned to her, his eyes burning with an inner intensity. "I'm Alexander," he said, his voice low and husky. "But my friends call me Alex."
Lara smiled, feeling a sense of connection with Alex that she couldn't explain. "I'm Lara," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
As they stood there, the air between them seemed to vibrate with tension. Lara felt like she was standing on the edge of a precipice, staring into an unknown abyss. She was scared, but she was also exhilarated, like she was teetering on the brink of something amazing.
And then, without warning, Alex reached out and brushed a strand of hair out of her face. His touch sent shivers down her spine, and Lara felt like she was melting into his eyes.
"I'll see you again soon, Lara," Alex whispered, his breath sending shivers down her spine.
And with that, he turned and disappeared into the night, leaving Lara feeling like she was floating on air. She watched him go, her heart pounding in her chest, and wondered what she had just gotten herself into.
