Chapter 2: Meeting past foes

821 Words
Oliver walked out of his home, greeted by a serene scene filled with earthly joy and contentment. Parents played with their children on the square nearby, their faces beaming with happiness. However, Oliver knew that in just one more month, all of this would turn into mere illusions. He briskly left the residential area, and not far away, there was a Michelin three-star Western restaurant. Indulging in a meal there typically cost at least five to six thousand pounds, an extravagance Oliver had hesitated to experience before. But now, he didn't care. Entering the restaurant, Oliver chose a window seat and proceeded to order the most expensive dishes on the menu, along with a bottle of Lafite Rothschild red wine. The bill easily amounted to fifty thousand pounds. Even the waitstaff cast admiring glances at Oliver, thinking him to be an affluent heir. After all, who else could afford such an extravagant feast? Oliver paid no attention to the onlookers, reveling in the delightful dishes before him. Perhaps it was the result of surviving six months in a frigid post-apocalyptic world, but savoring these exquisite flavors moved him nearly to tears. His eating became somewhat ferocious, drawing the attention and discussions of other diners. Oliver, however, paid no heed to their opinions. In a post-apocalyptic era, people would kneel and kowtow for a pack of instant noodles. When that time came, all civilized norms and morals would be mere echoes. While Oliver indulged in his meal, a woman passing by outside the restaurant couldn't help but stop. She was an elegant figure with flowing hair, wearing Gucci high heels – none other than Oliver's nemesis from his past life, Faye Rain. Accompanying her was her close friend, Lily Cunningham. As they strolled past the Michelin three-star restaurant, both women couldn't help but cast curious glances inside. The luxurious atmosphere inside had always been an unattainable dream for them. Faye, with a surprised expression, uttered, "Isn't that Oliver? How can he afford to dine here?" Lily, equally astonished, covered her mouth and said, "Oliver, so he's secretly wealthy? Look at the feast on his table, costing at least fifty thousand pounds. Who could afford such extravagance for a single meal?" Lily's tone carried a hint of envy. She knew that Oliver had been pursuing Faye for the past six months. Despite Faye not outright rejecting him, she hadn't accepted him either. Faye, a certified gold-digger, hoped to marry into wealth. Considering Oliver's stable life in Tianhai City – with a car and a house – she wasn't ready to let him go. But witnessing Oliver enjoying a luxurious meal that most people could only dream of, Faye's suspicions were aroused. "Could it be that Oliver is a hidden wealthy man?" Faye mused, tilting her head and flashing a hint of excitement in her eyes. "Right, in those TV dramas, there's often a character like him. Clearly rich but pretending to be an ordinary person in search of true love," Lily chimed in. Faye, her eyes brightening, considered the possibility. "Maybe I've been underestimating him. If that's true, I won't need to put in much effort. I might as well enjoy the benefits." The two women decided not to enter the restaurant directly but instead waited outside, pretending to coincidentally encounter Oliver. Faye wanted to maintain her goddess-like image, ensuring that even if Oliver was wealthy, he would still be her devoted admirer. After enjoying a satisfying meal, Oliver planned to head to the nearby supermarket to stock up on supplies. Despite his confidence in looting resources from the Walmart warehouse soon, a cautious approach dictated that he should prepare in advance to avoid any unforeseen circumstances. Surviving hunger in the past made Oliver intolerant of any risks. The impending apocalypse demanded meticulous planning and preparation. As he happily paid the bill and stepped out of the restaurant's grand entrance, a familiar voice echoed from the vicinity. "Oliver, what a coincidence!" Oliver turned to see Faye Rain and Lily Cunningham approaching. Faye, sweeping her hair behind her ear, deliberately revealed her fair neck and pink earlobes, a classic move to captivate a man's heart. Oliver's gaze, initially cold, warmed up for a moment. However, he quickly suppressed any emotions. This woman had caused his demise in his previous life, even scheming to use his rib to make soup. Suppressing the urge to retaliate, Oliver responded calmly, "Nothing, just mistook someone for a moment." He had changed his mind. Rather than ending her swiftly, he decided to let her experience the despair of the apocalypse first before employing various methods to torment her. With ample time to prepare and the advantage of his past life's memories, he had a hundred ways to make her suffer. For now, there was no need to deal with her immediately. The top priority was to build the safest refuge possible, ensuring a comfortable survival in the impending apocalypse.
