Chapter 2 — The Palace Summons

1091 Words
Aria dressed slowly, her hands trembling as she fastened the clasps of her gown. The silver markings on her palms had faded to faint lines, barely visible unless the light struck them just right. She didn’t know whether to be relieved or terrified. The memory of the silver‑eyed man lingered like a warm breath against her neck, impossible to shake. She touched her throat, remembering the way the threads of moonlight had curled there, intimate and deliberate. Her pulse quickened. *What was he?* *What was she becoming?* A sharp knock broke her thoughts. “Aria, we need to leave,” Lysander called through the door. She inhaled deeply, smoothing her hair before stepping out. Her brother stood in the hallway, armored and tense. His eyes scanned her face, searching for something she couldn’t name. “You look pale,” he said quietly. “Did something happen?” Aria hesitated. She couldn’t tell him. Not yet. “Just tired.” Lysander didn’t look convinced, but he nodded and led her down the manor’s grand staircase. Servants whispered as they passed, their gazes flicking nervously toward the cracked moon still visible through the windows. The fissure glowed like a wound in the sky. Outside, the carriage waited. Aria climbed in, settling across from Lysander. The horses stamped anxiously, their ears flicking back as if they sensed the tension in the air. The carriage lurched forward. --- The ride to the palace was silent at first. Aria watched the moon through the window, its fractured glow reflecting in her eyes. Every time she looked at it, the pulse inside her stirred, responding like a living thing. Lysander cleared his throat. “The king believes the fracture is a sign. Some say it’s an omen of war. Others think it’s divine punishment.” Aria’s fingers curled around the edge of her seat. “And what do you think?” “I think,” Lysander said slowly, “that something powerful has awakened. And the palace is afraid.” Aria looked away, her heart pounding. *If only he knew how right he was.* The carriage rolled through the city streets, where crowds gathered in uneasy clusters. People pointed at the sky, murmuring prayers or curses. Children clung to their parents. Guards patrolled every corner, their armor gleaming under the moon’s fractured light. When the palace gates came into view, Aria’s breath caught. The towering spires seemed darker than usual, as if the moon’s wound had cast a shadow over the entire kingdom. The carriage stopped. Lysander stepped out first, offering his hand. Aria took it, her palm warm against his gauntlet. The silver markings tingled faintly. They walked through the palace courtyard, where nobles whispered behind jeweled fans and guards stood rigid with unease. Aria felt eyes on her — curious, suspicious, fearful. She kept her chin lifted, though her stomach twisted. Inside the grand hall, the king awaited. --- King Thalen stood at the far end of the chamber, surrounded by advisors and mages. His expression was grave, his crown casting sharp shadows across his face. When Aria and Lysander approached, he raised a hand. “Lady Aria. Sir Lysander.” His voice echoed through the hall. “Thank you for coming so swiftly.” Aria bowed. “Your Majesty.” Thalen’s gaze lingered on her longer than necessary, as if searching for something beneath her skin. Aria resisted the urge to hide her hands. “The moon’s fracture is unlike anything recorded in our history,” Thalen said. “The royal mages have detected a surge of lunar magic across the kingdom. It is… unprecedented.” Aria’s pulse quickened. She felt the silver markings warm beneath her sleeves. One of the mages stepped forward, robes shimmering with runes. “Your Majesty, the surge is strongest near the Valenne estate.” Lysander stiffened. “What does that mean?” The mage’s eyes slid to Aria. “We believe someone in your household may have been… touched by the fracture.” Aria’s breath caught. Heat rushed through her body, the same heat she had felt in the void. The silver‑eyed man’s voice whispered through her memory. Moonbound heir… awaken. Thalen stepped closer. “Lady Aria, have you felt anything unusual since the moon cracked?” Her throat tightened. She could lie. She could protect herself. But the king’s gaze was sharp, and the mages were watching her with unnerving intensity. “I…” Aria swallowed. “I felt a pulse. A warmth. But I thought it was just shock.” The mage’s eyes narrowed. “May we examine your hands?” Aria froze. Lysander stepped forward immediately. “If you intend to accuse my sister—” “No one is accusing her,” Thalen said firmly. “But we must understand what is happening.” Aria exhaled shakily. Slowly, she extended her hands. The silver markings flared. Gasps rippled through the hall. The mages stepped back, eyes wide. Thalen’s expression hardened, not with anger — but with fear. Lysander grabbed her arm. “Aria—” The markings pulsed again, brighter this time, responding to her rising panic. The air around her shimmered with faint silver threads. The mage whispered, “She carries lunar magic.” Thalen’s voice dropped to a whisper. “The Moonbound Heir.” Aria’s heart stopped. The title echoed through her mind — the same words the silver‑eyed man had spoken. The same words that had wrapped around her like a promise. Thalen straightened. “Lady Aria, you must remain in the palace until we understand the extent of your connection to the fracture.” Lysander stepped in front of her. “She is not a prisoner.” “No,” Thalen said. “She is a necessity.” Aria’s breath trembled. The silver markings glowed softly, as if answering the king’s words. And then — faint but unmistakable — she felt him. The silver‑eyed man. His presence brushed against her thoughts, warm and intimate, like a hand sliding along her spine. You are not alone, his voice whispered. Aria’s knees nearly buckled. Thalen didn’t notice. “Prepare her chambers. And summon the High Seer.” The hall erupted into motion. Lysander gripped her shoulders. “Aria, what’s happening to you?” She looked up at him, eyes wide, heart racing. “I don’t know,” she whispered. But she did. Something ancient had awakened inside her. Something powerful. Something bound to the man with silver eyes. And the kingdom was already afraid.
