Chapter 1 — The Night the Sky Broke
The moon had always watched over Lyria — serene, distant, perfect.
Tonight, it felt wrong.
Aria Valenne stood on her balcony, the cool night wind brushing her bare shoulders as she leaned against the marble railing. The air tasted metallic, sharp enough to sting her tongue. Her skin prickled with a strange heat, a pulse beneath the surface that didn’t belong to her.
She pressed a hand to her chest.
The thrum answered.
It wasn’t her heartbeat.
It was something older.
The moon hung low, swollen and luminous, as if straining against the sky. Aria’s breath caught. A faint vibration rolled through her bones, making her exhale shakily. She gripped the railing harder, knuckles whitening.
Then the moon cracked.
A blinding fissure split across its surface, spilling silver light like blood. The world froze. Aria gasped as the pulse inside her surged violently, heat rushing through her veins. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed to the cold stone floor.
The light intensified, flooding her vision.
And then she heard it — a voice, deep and intimate, curling through her mind like a whisper against her ear.
“Moonbound heir… awaken.”
Her breath hitched. The voice felt close enough to touch, warm enough to make her shiver. She tried to speak, but the world dissolved into silver.
---
She fell through darkness.
Weightless. Breathless.
Suspended in a void that hummed with power.
Silver threads coiled around her body, brushing her skin like warm fingertips. Aria’s lips parted in a soft gasp as the magic traced her arms, her waist, her throat — gentle, deliberate, knowing.
A figure emerged from the darkness, tall and glowing with lunar light. His presence pressed against her senses, overwhelming and strangely familiar. When he spoke, the sound vibrated through her ribs.
“You feel it,” he murmured. “The fracture calls to you.”
Aria tried to step back, but the silver threads held her in place. His face came into focus — sharp jaw, silver eyes burning with intensity, a faint scar across his brow. Beautiful. Dangerous.
“Who are you?” she whispered.
His lips curved, almost a smile.
“I am bound to you. As you are bound to me.”
The void trembled. The symbols beneath her feet flared to life, glowing in rhythm with her pulse. Heat rushed through her again — stronger, deeper — and she felt herself drawn toward him, helpless against the pull.
“You must awaken,” he said softly. “Before the kingdom tears itself apart.”
The ground shattered beneath her.
Light swallowed everything.
---
Aria jolted awake in her bed, heart racing.
Her sheets were tangled around her legs, her skin flushed with lingering heat. She pressed her palms to her face — and froze.
Silver markings glowed faintly across her hands, curling like moonlight tattoos.
A knock sounded at her door.
“Aria?” Lysander’s voice. Her brother. “Are you awake?”
She scrambled to hide her hands under the blanket. “Y‑yes.”
Lysander stepped inside, still in his guard uniform, worry etched across his features. “The moon… it’s still cracked. The king has summoned all noble families to the palace.”
Aria swallowed hard.
The silver markings pulsed once beneath the blanket.
“Get dressed,” Lysander said. “We leave immediately.”
He closed the door.
Aria stared at her hands, breath trembling.
The glow faded slowly…
but it didn’t disappear.
And somewhere in the back of her mind, she still felt him — the silver‑eyed stranger — like a warm breath against her thoughts.
