CHAPTER 1 :THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED
I never imagined that one night could destroy everything I had spent twenty-two years building. My name is Amara Williams, and until that night, my biggest problems were paying rent, keeping my job, and convincing my younger sister that everything would eventually be okay. I was wrong. Everything was about to change. Rain hammered against the windows of the small café where I worked, turning the streets of New York into rivers of reflected lights. I stood behind the counter, wiping an already spotless glass while watching the clock. 11:47 p.m. "Amara." I looked up. Mr. Thompson, the café owner, was standing near the kitchen entrance with his arms crossed. "You can go home." I forced a smile. "I still have twenty minutes." "You've been working since seven in the morning." "I need the overtime." He sighed. "You always need the overtime." I didn't answer. He knew about my sister's hospital bills. He knew that I was trying to pay for her treatment while attending college during the day and working at night. What he didn't know was that my sister's condition had gotten worse. I had received the doctor's message that afternoon. We need to discuss another treatment option. Please come to the hospital as soon as possible. Another treatment option. Those words had been haunting me for hours. Another treatment meant more money. Money I didn't have. I looked at the clock again. 11:50. Then the café door opened. The bell above it rang softly. A man walked inside. For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. He was tall, dressed in a perfectly fitted black suit. Rainwater glistened on his dark hair, and his expression was so cold that the warmth of the café seemed to disappear. He didn't look like someone who came into cafés. He looked like someone who owned them. He walked toward the counter. "Coffee." I blinked. "Excuse me?" "Black coffee." His voice was deep and calm. "Of course." I turned around and reached for a cup. As I prepared the coffee, I noticed something strange. He wasn't looking at the menu. He wasn't looking at his phone. He was looking at me. I tried to ignore him. "That'll be four dollars." He placed a hundred-dollar bill on the counter. I stared at it. "You don't have to give me that much." "Keep the change." "That's ninety-six dollars." "I know." I pushed the bill back toward him. "I can't accept this." For the first time, something changed in his expression. His eyes narrowed. "Why?" "Because you paid too much." "It's a tip." "That's not a tip. That's my rent." He stared at me. Then, unexpectedly, the corner of his mouth lifted. A smile. It disappeared almost immediately. "What's your name?" I hesitated. "Why?" "Just answer me." I frowned. "Amara." He repeated it quietly. "Amara." The way he said my name made something uncomfortable twist inside my chest. "And yours?" He didn't answer. Instead, he took his coffee and walked toward a table near the window. Strange. Very strange. I went back to cleaning. At exactly midnight, he stood. He walked toward the door. Then stopped. Without turning around, he said, "Don't go home tonight." My hand froze. "What?" He turned. His expression was serious. "Don't go home." I laughed nervously. "Are you threatening me?" "No." "Then why would you say that?" He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small black card. He placed it on the counter. "If anyone asks you about me, you don't know me." My heart began beating faster. "What is this?" But he was already walking away. I grabbed the card. There was only one thing written on it. Alexander Black. Underneath was a phone number. I looked through the window. The man was getting into a black car parked across the street. The car disappeared into the rain. I stared at the card. Something told me I should throw it away. Instead, I put it in my pocket. Five minutes later, I locked the café and stepped outside. The rain had become heavier. I pulled my jacket tightly around myself and started walking toward the bus stop. Then I heard footsteps. I turned around. Nobody. I continued walking. Footsteps again. This time, closer. My heart raced. I looked over my shoulder. A man was standing beneath a streetlight. He was watching me. I stopped. He stopped. I started walking faster. So did he. I reached into my pocket for my phone. No signal. "Seriously?" I turned into a crowded street, hoping to lose him. Then someone grabbed my arm. I screamed. A hand covered my mouth. "Don't scream." I struggled. The stranger pulled me into a narrow alley. My back hit the wall. I couldn't breathe. "Where is it?" "What?" "The card." My blood went cold. "What card?" He grabbed my wrist. "The card Alexander gave you." I stared at him. How did he know? "I don't know what you're talking about." He tightened his grip. "Don't lie to me." Suddenly, headlights appeared at the entrance of the alley. A black car stopped. The stranger released me and ran. I slid down the wall, shaking. The car door opened. Alexander stepped out. He looked at me. Then at the direction the stranger had escaped. His jaw tightened. "I told you not to go home." I stood slowly. "You followed me?" "No." "Then how did you find me?" He didn't answer. I stared at him. "Who are you?" Alexander walked closer. For the first time, I saw something in his eyes that wasn't arrogance. Fear. "Someone who is about to make your life very complicated." I swallowed. "What does that mean?" He looked at the card in my hand. Then he said something that changed my life forever. "Because that card wasn't supposed to be given to you." I frowned. "What?" Alexander stepped closer. "Your father gave it to me twelve years ago." My heart stopped. "My father?" I hadn't heard that name spoken by a stranger in years. My father had disappeared when I was ten. Everyone told me he had abandoned us. My mother had refused to talk about him until the day she died. "How did you know my father?" Alexander looked away. "Because he saved my life." I stared at him. "What happened to him?" Silence. "Alexander." He finally looked at me. "He's alive." My entire body went cold. "No." "Yes." "My father is dead." "That's what he wanted everyone to believe." I shook my head. "You don't know what you're talking about." Alexander reached into his jacket. He pulled out an old photograph. He handed it to me. My fingers trembled as I looked at it. There he was. My father. Standing beside a much younger Alexander. But there was something else. Written on the back of the photograph were six words: Protect my daughter when I disappear. I looked up. "Why me?" Alexander's expression hardened. "Because your father knew they would eventually come for you." "Who?" He looked toward the dark street. "The people who killed your mother." I stopped breathing. "My mother died in an accident." "No." Alexander's voice was barely a whisper. "It wasn't an accident." Tears filled my eyes. "You're lying." "I wish I were." He took one step closer. "Amara, you have been living a lie your entire life." I shook my head. "No." "Your father didn't abandon you." "Stop." "He disappeared because he was trying to protect you." "Stop!" "And now he's gone missing again." I stared at him. "What do you mean again?" Alexander's face became expressionless. "Because three days ago, I received a message from him." My heart pounded. "What did it say?" Alexander looked directly into my eyes. "It said..." He paused. Then whispered: 'They found my daughter.' A cold shiver ran through me. Alexander opened the car door. "Get inside." I didn't move. "Why should I trust you?" "You shouldn't." He looked at me. "But if you stay here, you won't live long enough to find out who your father really is." I looked behind me. The alley was empty. Then I looked at Alexander. For some reason, I believed him. I got into the car. He closed the door. And as the car disappeared into the darkness, I had no idea that I had just stepped into a world of secrets, murder, betrayal... and a man who would eventually become the most dangerous person I had ever loved.
