Accelerating along in the darkness, small bits of rock ricocheted off the bare wheel-wells and tumbled out with the cloud of dust behind him. It wasn’t until he was back on a main road that the sporadic street lights cast a pale light on the mess in the right seat. There was blood all over the seat and floor. The sight of it brought Cole regret. He sped on, farther along the empty early morning stretch of road, glancing every few seconds to his right.
