Chapter 1
Camille kept on looking around, hoping that she could get some help. Why does her car get a flat tire this time when she was too far from town already? The road was isolated, it was getting dark, and she was in an unfamiliar place. Her heart starts to beat faster, feeling nervous. If she encounters a bad guy here, she certainly will be in big trouble, and it could lead her into danger.
She was on her way to her boyfriend’s house. Axel Griffin told her that he was in his hometown in Florida. She had no idea that the town he was referring to was a twelve-hour drive away from New York. And now, she was lost. Axel hasn't answered his phone for the past two days.
She was so badly in need that she ended up coming here, looking forward to talking to Axel. She needed money to pay for the surgery on her sick mother. The doctors said that if she didn’t immediately undergo her heart surgery, there was more likely a chance of having another heart attack. Her mother's illness is a traitor. She has to do something.
Axel was a rich man. He was one of the owners of a distillery company where she had previously worked as a clerk. When he confessed his feelings for her, she immediately accepted him because she was impressed with his hard work, even though he was rich already. When he found out that she hadn't yet graduated from college, he sent her to a costly university. She had just graduated last month and is currently looking for a job. It's not like Axel offered to send her back to his company. Her boyfriend even wants her not to work. The problem was, her mother's health condition came after she had a heart attack the other day.
She needed at least one million. Axel could afford to lend her money. He is not stingy with her; in fact, he even bought her a car last year, though it was only second-hand; he said he bought it from his friend. But besides paying for her tuition fees and buying a car, he also paid for the apartment she rented in New Jersey. In short, Axel has been the one who has sustained her and her mother’s needs for more than a year.
She looked around again, but there was no one around. It’s already five-thirty in the afternoon, and after a few minutes, the darkness will fill in the surroundings. She even didn't eat because she rushed to come here. Besides her being in need of money, she also misses her boyfriend, whom she hasn't seen for more than two months. Axel said that he was so busy going back and forth to New York and Florida because his father asked him to go home due to some important things. For months, Axel was just sneaking around into her apartment after not giving him what he wanted—to get her virginity.
They never had s*x in their one-year relationship. If there’s anything, it's just a kiss down to her breast. Axel was a one-hot, good-looking guy; there’s no doubt about that. It was just that she didn’t want to engage in premarital s*x. Maybe she was still studying during that time; that’s why she was afraid he might get her pregnant. Or maybe it's because he didn’t mention anything about marriage. But if Axel will now ask for her virginity, she will give it to him wholeheartedly, for the sake of her mother, who badly needs her urgent surgery.
A horn from a car that was so expensive made her startled while musing in her mind about Axel. The driver got off and approached her. She somehow managed to breathe a little.
"Who are you looking for?" the man in his uniform asked. Her fear was gone when she heard his respectful voice.
"I'm looking for Axel Griffin’s house. Suddenly, my car stopped and got a flat tire."
"Oh! How are you related to Sir Axel?"
"I’m his girlfriend."
She saw the surprise and confusion on the driver's face. He turned around to look in the car and scratched his head.
"Ah... Well... Just a minute." He quickly went back to the car and talked to someone inside the car. She couldn't see who was with him and how many were inside. The car's window tint was almost black. Maybe it became darker because the surroundings were getting darker. After a minute, the driver went back to her.
"Just go ride and come with us. No one will dare to touch your car because the land is already occupied by the estate." He pointed to the black and shiny Ford Expedition.
"Is Axel’s house far from here?"
"It's only about three minutes away, ma'am. Sir Axel is not in the estate, but if your car breaks down, we'll just ask Sir Nicholas' men to take care of it."
"Who is Nicholas?"
"Sir Axel's brother."
"Axel has a brother?" She doubted the man, perhaps pretending to know what she was talking about. "Maybe you’re mistaken, or maybe you're referring to a different Axel."
"If you intended to come into the Griffin estate, and you say you're looking for Axel Griffin, I'm sure we're only talking about one person. It's almost already night, and there’s no other way here and no one to ask for someone’s help."
Axel didn't tell her that he had a brother. The only things he mentioned were his father and his stepmother. But since she had no choice at the moment, against her will, she went with the driver to the car, carrying her shoulder bag and a small backpack. She had no intention of staying there for so long.
She wasn’t expecting that Axel’s brother, whom the driver was referring to, was extremely handsome and had such a strong s****l appeal. This is the kind of thing that, when you've crossed paths, you’d rather choose not to take your eyes off it. In this case, he’s too formal. He just nodded at her as she sweetly smiled at him. She wanted to regret that she felt stupid for doing so. In the corner of her eyes, she was sure he never looked back at her again.
She finds the man snobbish and arrogant. She also felt awkward because it was silent inside the car as they passed through the road going to Griffin’s house. They were passing by, full of trees, while turning, which made the surroundings seem darker. In another chance, she will be afraid of her situation right now because she is with strangers. But she had to take the risks for the sake of her mother's safety.
She saw a grand mansion just after a few moments. The man still didn't talk. If it is Axel's brother, the two have a big difference from each other. Axel was always smiling and friendly to other people. This one is aloof, and it must be costly for him to say a few words. Maybe he thinks highly of himself and thinks of her as a low-class woman.
Most rich people are like that. She shouldn't be surprised. But she was lucky enough to have a boyfriend like Axel, who was humble and even didn't look at her status in life. He loved her, even though she was poor.
"Go back to my car with Bert and check the damage." His baritone voice was deep as the car pulled over in front of the mansion and the man got off. "So, that is the reason why, all of a sudden, it disappeared in the garage, he let his lover use it."
She furrowed her brow. The man was not talking to her, but it seemed like he was referring to her while talking to the driver.
Lover?
"Yes, sir. Maybe Bert could fix it and bring it right here." The driver looked at her as she got out of the car. "Well, where is she going to stay now that Sir Axel is still out of the country?"
Out of the country?! Axel didn't say anything about going out of the country. She felt anxious again. What about her mother?
"In the guest room next to the library. Tell Tindy to accompany her," the man replied, not even looking at her.
"Is Axel out of the country?" she asks to confirm with the driver.
"Yes. But don't worry, Sir Nick will certainly let Sir Axel know about your presence here in the mansion. Tindy will be the one to bring you to your room. I'll just go back to your car so the repair man will check on it."
"What does your Sir Nick mean to check his car if there’s damage?"
"The one you were using was Sir Nick’s car. It just suddenly disappeared from the garage some time ago. We're not surprised that it was Sir Axel who took it." The driver scratched his head before getting into the car. She wanted to ask what he meant when he said that she was a lover, but the car was already moving in front of her, and a helper led her inside the mansion.
