“The Senator is dead!” the soldier on the front shouted and Annabel realized their time was up. She took a deep breath, determined to keep her eyes open. William’s hand remained on her shoulder, but she couldn’t see him. She wondered whether she should turn and face him, look into his cold blue eyes one last time. Before she could decide, she felt the urgent caress of William’s energy around her, followed by a sharp pull of her shoulder. She lost her balance and stumbled back as he switched their places, wrapping his arms around her while positioning himself between her and the guards.
