"Her abilities to deceive, manipulate and kill are what make her lethal."

***

Balance. That's what the organisation aimed to achieve.

A purpose passed down from generation to generation. But corruption is inevitable over time, a desire for money and lust for power is part of being human. The Balance lost sight of their true aim...

Grim was Balance's greatest achievement. Raised from birth to kill without remorse, without emotion and without a trace. She was a living weapon and embodied innocence. They thought that they could control her, manipulate her for the rest of her days.

They were wrong of course.

Realising the corrupt nature of the organisation she set herself up for capture, staging the premeditation for an FBI trainee's murder. It got her ten years in jail, eligible for parole by five with good behaviour. But four years into the sentence she was happily serving, a case that a BAU team at the FBI thinks has to do with the Balance, she is temporarily pulled her out of prison to consult on the case.

Her knowledge of Balance is invaluable, her understanding of an assassin's mind crucial. But those ties to the organisation fog her vision and, the torment of her previous life shows in every move she makes. She knows she has to help catch the client, the one who paid for a series of people to be killed. But as the case unravels, more and more of her past comes to light...

And it all seems to be leading to something worse than she could ever imagine.

00: Prologue
Balance; (verb) bring or come into or keep in equilibrium *** Grim I remember the first time I saw him. It was raining as he sat in 'Jack's Café', a mug of coffee sitting to the front and to the left of him, next to the file he was reading through. I remember seeing him through the lens of my black camera, watching as he looked up from his file to look outside. I knew he couldn't see me, but I also knew from experience that people can sense when they are being watched. His dark, black hair had begun falling into his green-brown eyes. He was my target, the person I had been assigned to kill. Of course, it wasn't until after I had seen him that I had begun the path to changing my mind. When looking back through the photos I was able to see the words on the file he was reading over. It was a cold case, a murder from ten years ago that they hadn't solved yet. I knew about it, because I was the killer. His personality, his behaviour, it didn't match the reasoning behind him being a target. He wasn't the kind of person to commit a s****l assault... his profile was also inconsistent within the Balance archives. It was choppy, filled with misinformation that would only be noticed if you were to follow up every part of their life. If anyone else were assigned to him they wouldn't have. But it was me. I always profile my targets, gather my own information, figure out their routine, their personality and every part of their life possible. He was a almost a psychology doctorate, currently training to join the Federal Bureau of Investigation while completing his degree. He seemed like the kind of person to help save lives, he could make a great difference in this world. And me, well... I was the personification of death.
