Julie's heart was beating so fast as she followed the man down a well-lit hallway. She recognized him, Marcus, a former student who graduated a few years before her. He had a big reputation for arrogance, and she wasn't sad to see him depart university.
Marcus took her into a small conference room and closed the door behind them. He waved for her to sit, and Julie agreed.
“So Julie, it's been a while,” Marcus said, sitting back in his chair and inspecting her.
“Yeah, it has. I didn't expect to see you here.” Julie said, trying to keep her voice down.
“Life is full of surprises,” Marcus smirked. “But let's get down to the point. I remember you from school. Always focused and driven. It's impressive.”
Julie, realizing where this was heading, stiffened. “Thank you. I worked hard to get here.”
Marcus smirked, his eyes shining. “That's clear, and I can help you. There is a position available, and I believe you will be perfect for it.”
“Really?" Julie replied with a sense of hope. “That's great, I am very interested."
“I know you could be. But there is a catch. The job carries a specific requirement before it can be yours.” Marcus said as his smile widened.
“Requirement?” Julie asked.
Marcus leaned closer to Julie. His voice changed to one of a false sincerity. “You know I have always admired you, Julie. And believe that we can have something amazing. I want you to be my girlfriend and the job is all yours. Just say yes. As simple as that.”
Julie's cheeks flushed with anger. “Are you serious? You think I can compromise my morality for a job?”
Marcus’ expression toughened. “You can either accept my terms or leave with nothing. I am offering you a route in, Julie.
Julie's chair scraped loudly on the ground as she stood up. “I would rather have nothing than sell myself like that.”
Julie's heart was pounding from range and disappointment as she stormed out of the room. Without paying attention to where she was going as she rushed down the hallway, she collided with someone coming around the corner.
“Whoa, slow down my dear.” a voice said, calming her.
Julie looked up and saw an elegant, tall woman with a warm smile and sharp eyes. “I am so sorry Ma, I wasn't looking,” Julie said.
The woman raised an eyebrow, diverting her attention from Julie to the room she had just left. “Hope you are okay?"
Julie nodded, trying to compose herself. “Yes I am fine, just had an odd experience back there.”
The woman tried to relax her expression." My name is Rebecca, and I am the owner of this company. Please, can you tell me what happened?”
“I-um, I was here for an interview, but it wasn't what I expected.”
Rebecca signaled to Julie to follow her. “ Come, let's talk at my office.”
Julie took a deep breath and recounted everything when she got to Rebecca's office. Rebecca's expression was unreadable but she listened carefully.
Rebecca leaned back in her chair, contemplating as Julie finished recounting her story. “Marcus' behavior is intolerable, and I am sorry you have to go through that. I will deal with that later. As for you, I see you have got potential.”
“Thank you, Ma!” Julie said in excitement.
“Please call me Rebecca. Now, I can't offer you the position Marcus mentioned, but I have another opportunity for you. It's entry-level, and the salary isn't that great, but it gets you in the door.”
Julie nodded. “I just want a chance to prove myself. I will take the offer.”
Rebecca handed her a contract paper. “Good, welcome aboard. We will talk about the details and your resumption date later.
Julie left the office with a lightened heart, full of relief and anticipation. That evening, she planned with Mason to celebrate the job offer at their favorite neighborhood restaurant.
“Tell me everything Julie, how did it go?” Mason asked, holding her hands from across the table.
Julie smiled as she recounted everything that happened that day. “ It was a rollercoaster, but I got the job. The pay isn't much, but it's a stepping stone.”
Mason moved closer to the table, holding her hands tight. “This is only the beginning. I am very proud of you.”
Julie felt the day's stress slip away as they ate. Right then, a familiar voice called out, “Mason! Is that you?”
Mason's face broke into a huge smile as he turned to the voice. “Desmond, wow, it's been ages!”
“I can't believe this, how are you doing man?” Desmond asked as he approached the table.
Mason stood up and hugged his old friend. “Good, I am good. This is Julie, my girlfriend. Julie, this is Desmond. We attended school together.
“Nice to meet you, Desmond.” Julie smiled politely.
“Likewise," Desmond replied, shaking Julie's hand." We should catch up sometime, Mason. It's good to see you.”
“Sure” Mason agreed, exchanging contact information. “Let's see you sometime soon.”
“That sounds fine,” Desmond nodded. “Enjoy your evening, you two.”
As Desmond left, Mason sat down with a look of surprise and recollections on his face. “What a small world, I can't believe I ran into Desmond today.”
“It is,” Julie smiled as she continued with her dinner.
