After stumbling into Desmond in the restaurant, Mason couldn't contain his joy. After supper with Julie one evening, Mason's phone beeped with a message from Desmond.
Desmond: It was great to see you, Mason. Let's catch up for coffee tomorrow. Same place at 10 a.m?
“Desmond wants to meet me tomorrow, should I go?” Mason said to Julie as he showed her the message.
“Of course, it will be beneficial for you to catch up with an old friend. And who knows, perhaps he might have some work leads for you.
“Yeah, I think I have to go,” Mason replied, sensing a glimmer of hope.
Mason arrived at the restaurant a few minutes earlier the next morning. He ordered a coffee and chose a quiet spot near the window. In a short while, Desmond entered, dressed sharply in a tailored suit.
“How have you been Mason?” Desmond said with a broad smile.
Mason stood up and they hugged. “I am doing well. How about you? You seem to be doing well.”
Desmond smiled, “life has been good. Sit down, let's catch up.”
Desmond ordered a coffee as they sat down. Mason felt curious as they talked about old times. Desmond used to be the confident, ambitious kind, but there was something so different about him now. A polished and assured demeanor that comes with success.
Desmond leaned back in his chair. “So, what have you been up to?”
Mason felt a little uncomfortable. “Actually, I am still looking for work. Julie has just secured a new position, but it's been tough finding something for myself.”
“The job market is difficult,” Desmond said, nodding attentively. “But, hey, maybe I have something that can help.
“Oh? What is that?” Mason lifted his eyebrows.
My father's company is expanding, and we are looking for intelligent, driven individuals. I can put in a good word for you. It's a high-paying position with good benefits,” Desmond said as he leaned closer.
Mason's face was filled with excitement. “That sounds amazing. What is the Job?"
“A managerial role, supervising a team and managing some project coordination,” Desmond explained. “ I know you have the skills and the motivation. We just need to get you up to speed on our operations.
Mason's mind was filled with options." That's incredible, Desmond. I am short of words.”
“Say yes, we need someone like you. And to be honest, it would be nice to have a familiar face around,” Desmond replied, smiling.
Mason, feeling an odd combination of exhilaration and anxiety. “This is a very important decision, I need to speak with Julie about it.”
“Okay,” Desmond replied, fixing his eyes on Mason's face. “Take your time to think about it. This might be a game changer for you.”
Mason nodded, “ Thank you, Desmond. I will.”
They talked for a while, catching up on life and reminiscing about past times. As their conversation deepened, Mason couldn't ignore the fact that Desmond was observing him more closely than usual. The way Desmond gazed at him made him uncomfortable.
After a long conversation, they rose to depart. Desmond clapped Mason on the shoulder. “I will be in touch. Try and think about the offer. We would love to have you work with us.”
“I will,” Mason assured Desmond, shaking his hand. “ Thanks again for the offer.”
Mason repeated the conversation in his mind as he walked home. The offer seems appealing. It was a lifeline for him, but something in Desmond's expression bothered him.
Julie was waiting for him with a hopeful expression when he got home. “ How did it go?”
Mason smiled, trying to shake things off. “ Everything went nicely. Desmond offered me a high-paying job in his father's company.
“That is great, what did you say?” Julie's eyes widened in excitement.
“This is an important decision. Though it sounds like an amazing opportunity, I told him I would think about it.” Mason said, sitting close to her.
Julie held him tight, “ I am very happy for you! Mason. This might be the breakpoint you have been waiting for.”
Mason felt both excited and skeptical, “yeah, it could be.”
That evening, Mason kept twisting and turning in his bed. His thoughts racing. He couldn't stop thinking about Desmond's proposal. The position seemed so ideal for him, but the way Desmond gazed left him concerned. Was it just old pals reuniting or was there something more?
They stayed in touch over the next few days. Desmond sent nice messages and answered Mason's job-related queries. Mason found himself gradually warming to the notion, despite his doubts.
Finally, Mason made a decision one evening. He called Julie, setting her down. “I am going to accept the position, it's too good to pass up.”
Julie's eyes beam with pride." you deserve it, Mason, I believe it's the best decision for you.”
The next morning, Mason called Desmond with a burst of excitement." I am in, when do I start?”
Desmond's voice was kind and welcoming as he responded. “That is fantastic news, Mason. How about Monday? We will set you up and introduce you to other staff.
“Ok then, Monday.” Mason agreed with him. “Thank you again, Desmond, I appreciate the opportunity.”
Mason felt exhilarated as he hung up the phone. This was his chance to turn things around. But the suspicion of Desmond's intentions persisted in the back of his mind.
Monday arrived so fast and Mason found himself in the slick modern lobby of Desmond's father's business. Desmond greeted him pleasantly, introduced him to the team, and showed him around the workplace. Mason felt a surge of optimism as the workplace was buzzing with activities.
“This is your office, welcome aboard, Mason,” Desmond explained, opening the door to a large, well-appointed space.
Mason took a deep breath. “Thank you, Desmond, I will not let you down.”
“Let's get you settled in, I know you won't,” Desmond said, with his eyes fixed on Mason's face.
Mason became more immersed in his work as the day continued, meeting colleagues and learning the ropes. But now and then, he caught Desmond staring at him with an intensity that made him nervous.
When Mason drove home that evening, he couldn't stop thinking about all that happened that day. The position was all he had hoped for, but Desmond's actions continued to bother him. He chose to keep it aside for the time being, after all, he had a lot to prove and his new career to focus on.
“How was your first day?” Julie asked as she embraced him with a kiss as he entered the house.
Mason, feeling relieved, smiled. “It was fantastic. The staff is excellent and the work is fascinating, I think I like it there.”
Julie held his hand “This is only the beginning and I am very proud of you.”
Mason held her tight, ignoring all his worries about Desmond. “Yeah,” he replied softly. “just the beginning.”
As Mason lay in bed that night, his phone vibrated with a text message from Desmond. “Dinner tomorrow? Just two of us. We need to talk.” Mason stared at the message for a long time. What did Desmond want to Discuss?
