The hospital room felt suffocatingly quiet, White walls. The slow rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor. The faint antiseptic smell lingering in the air. Everything about the room felt controlled except the people inside it.
Sophie lay against the raised hospital bed, pale but very much alive, her fingers gripping the blanket tightly as though she were drawing strength from it. Across from her stood Maya and Lucas.
Maya's arms were folded across her chest, her posture rigid, her face calm but her eyes sharp. Lucas stood slightly in front of her, as if instinctively placing himself between the two women. Sophie's gaze locked onto Maya.
Then suddenly she laughed, a bitter, hysterical one. "So this is how it ends," she said hoarsely, her voice trembling with rage.
"Maya Bennett standing here like some innocent saint." Her finger shot toward Maya.
"What did I ever do to you?" she screamed.
"You killed my baby!"
The words slammed into the room like thunder.
Lucas's jaw tightened.
Sophie continued, her voice growing louder. "Not only did you kill my baby, but you also took my chance of ever being a mother!" Her breathing grew heavier as tears streamed down her face. "Do you know what Dr Anna just told me? Do you know what you did to me?"
She slapped her hand against her stomach. "I can never have children again!"
Her eyes burned into Maya. "And for that, Maya Bennett, I will send you to prison."
Lucas cut in immediately. "That is not happening."
His voice was cold. Final.
Sophie slowly turned her head toward him. "What?"
Lucas stepped forward. "There is no way Maya is going to prison for something she didn't do."
Silence filled the room.
Then Sophie laughed again, quieter this time, shaking her head slowly.
"Wow."
She wiped the tears from her face as she looked between them.
"Lucas Thoreau protecting his dear baby mama."
Her lips curved into a mocking smile. "How touching."
Her gaze sharpened. "Since you're both so determined to defend each other, maybe we should stop pretending."
She leaned forward slightly. "I want Layrus."
Maya's expression hardened instantly.
Sophie continued calmly, almost casually. "Since he is already a Thoreau heir publicly..." she shrugged lightly, "...he is my child."
For a second the room went completely still.
Then Maya clapped her hands slowly. The sound echoed sharply through the room.
"Wow, Sophie." Her voice dripped with sarcasm.
"So this was the plan all along?" She tilted her head slightly.
"All these dramatic acts, the tears, the accusations... all just to get your hands on my child."
Her eyes turned ice-cold. "Let me inform you of something clearly."
She stepped closer to the bed. "There is absolutely no way you will ever be Layrus's mother."
Her voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. "Not today. Not tomorrow. Not in this lifetime."
Sophie's smile faded Her eyes shifted slowly toward Lucas Then her tone changed.
"I know you can't wait to divorce me."
She leaned back against the pillow comfortably.
"But that will only happen in your dreams."
Lucas said nothing.
Sophie's eyes gleamed with victory. "You want to protect Maya Bennett?" she said slowly.
"Then listen carefully, Lucas."
She pointed between the two of them. "I can destroy her life with one statement." Her voice became soft but deadly.
"A grieving wife who lost her baby after being attacked... do you know how easy it would be for the world to believe that story?"
Maya's fingers curled into fists.
Sophie smiled. "The police would investigate." She looked at Maya.
"Doctors make mistakes too. Licenses get suspended. Careers get ruined."
Her eyes returned to Lucas. "Your precious app launch? Your company's reputation? All of it is gone in one scandal."
She paused. "So here are my terms."
Lucas's expression hardened.
Sophie spoke clearly. "You remain married to me." Her gaze was unwavering.
"Not just publicly." She emphasised the next words.
"You stay married to me and be intimate with me like a real husband."
Maya's eyes flashed.
Sophie continued. "I keep my shares in Thoreau Systems."
She smirked slightly. "After all, Mr Thoreau gave them to me because he believed I was carrying the next Thoreau heir."
Sophie finished calmly. "If you refuse..."
She shrugged lightly. "Then Maya goes to prison."
Maya slowly turned to Lucas, Her eyes were fierce A silent warning, Don't do it.
Sophie watched the moment with amusement.
Lucas looked between the two women.
Then he spoke. "I accept."
Maya's head snapped toward him. "What?"
Sophie's smile slowly widened.
Lucas didn't look at Maya His voice remained steady. "I accept your terms."
Maya stared at him in disbelief. Her heart pounded with anger. "Sophie will stay married to me," Lucas continued.
"She keeps the shares."
Maya's eyes burned.
She knew exactly what Sophie was doing. And Lucas had just walked straight into it.
Sophie leaned back into the hospital bed, satisfied.. "Smart choice," she said softly.
Lucas finally turned toward Maya. But she was already looking at him.
Because she understood something Sophie didn't. Lucas had made the deal to protect her but by doing so He had just handed Sophie the power she always wanted.
