A Dangerous Alliance

Morning arrived slowly over the house. The pale sunlight crept through the kitchen windows, touching the quiet room with a gentle glow that felt completely out of place after the chaos of the previous night. Maya had not slept, not even for a moment. She sat at the kitchen table, staring blankly at the cup of tea in front of her. The steam had long disappeared, leaving the liquid cold and untouched. Her injured left hand rested on the table, wrapped loosely in a cloth she had tied around it during the night. The swelling had grown worse, and every small movement sent a dull ache through her wrist. But the physical pain barely registered. Her mind was still trapped in the events of the night before, Damien forcing the door open, His drunken eyes. The moment he pushed her to the bed. Maya closed her eyes tightly. She could still feel the panic that had surged through her chest as she struggled against him. The sound of the glass striking his head echoed in her memory. After he collapsed, she had sat on the floor for a long time, shaking, unsure of what to do. Eventually, she had dragged him onto the bed with great difficulty, cleaned the small wound on his forehead, and covered him with a blanket Even then, sleep never came. She simply waited for morning And now morning was here. Upstairs, the bedroom door creaked open, and Maya heard slow footsteps moving across the hallway. Her body stiffened slightly. A moment later, Damein appeared at the kitchen entrance, His hair was messy, and the faint bruise on his forehead was now clearly visible. He stopped when he saw her sitting at the table. For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then Damien lowered his gaze. "Maya," he said quietly. She didn't respond. He walked slowly into the kitchen and pulled out the chair across from her The sound of the chair scraping against the floor felt unusually loud in the silent room. He sat down For a moment, he simply stared at his hands. Then he sighed deeply "I remember what happened last night." Maya finally looked up His voice sounded different "I'm sorry," he said. The words hung heavily in the air Maya studied his face carefully. There was something almost convincing about the regret in his expression. "I lost control," he continued quietly. "I drank too much." He rubbed his forehead slowly. "I don't even remember half of it... but I remember enough to know I crossed a line." Maya said nothing. Damein looked up at her again "I would never hurt you intentionally," he said. His voice softened. "You and Layrus are the only family I have." Maya's fingers tightened slightly around the cup on the table. "You scared me last night," she said quietly. The words were simple, but the emotion behind them was heavy. Damein lowered his head again "I know." Silence filled the kitchen once more Then he leaned forward slightly. "I swear to you," he said sincerely, "it will never happen again." Maya watched him carefully Something inside her wanted to believe him This was the man who had supported her when she arrived in Sweden alone and pregnant. The man who had helped her raise Layrus, the man who had protected her when she had no one else But another part of her couldn't forget the look in his eyes the night before. "Damein..." she began slowly. But he interrupted her gently. "I know you feel guilty," he said. She blinked. "You think last night happened because of me" Maya frowned slightly. "That's not what-" "But it's true," he continued softly. He leaned back in the chair, sighing deeply. "I pushed you too hard with my questions." He shook his head. "I shouldn't have asked you about Lucas like that." Maya's chest tightened at the mention of Lucas's name. Damein noticed the reaction immediately. But he kept his expression calm. "I already knew the truth," he said quietly. Maya looked up in surprise. "What truth?" He hesitated slightly before answering. "That you still love him." The words landed heavily. Maya didn't respond. Damein let out a tired laugh "It's obvious," he said. "Anyone can see it." He looked up at her again, his eyes softer now. "But that doesn't change how I feel." Maya stared at him. "I still love you," he continued. "And I still want our family." Her throat tightened. Damein leaned forward again. "So if you want to leave someday... I'll accept it." The sentence sounded painfully sincere. "But until that day," he added quietly, "I'll keep trying." The guilt inside Maya's chest deepened She had always been honest about their marriage being a contract But hearing him say those words still hurt. "I don't want to hurt you," she whispered. Damein smiled faintly. "You already have." The honesty of the statement made Maya look down. "But that's okay," he continued. "Because loving someone always carries that risk." He stood up slowly. "I should go to work." Maya watched him as he walked toward the door. Before leaving, he paused. "Maya," he said gently. She looked up. "Thank you for not giving up on me last night." Then he left The front door closed quietly behind him And the moment he stepped outside, the softness disappeared from his face His expression hardened immediately. He walked toward his car slowly Once inside, he pulled out his phone For several seconds he simply stared at the screen Then he scrolled through his contacts His finger stopped on one name. Sophie. Damein hesitated briefly. Then he pressed the call button. The phone rang twice before she answered. "Well," Sophie's voice said smoothly, "this is unexpected." Damein didn't bother with greetings. "You won" There was a pause on the other end of the line. "I'm listening," Sophie replied. "I'll work with you," he said flatly. A slow smile spread across Sophie's face as she leaned back in her chair. "I knew you would come around eventually." Damein's voice remained cold. "But this isn't for you." "Oh?" "This is for me," he continued. "And for my family." Sophie laughed softly. "Of course it is." She stood up and walked toward the window of her office. "So tell me," she said. "What changed your mind?" Damein's grip tightened slightly on the phone. "I realised something," he replied. "Maya will always choose Lucas." Sophie's smile widened. "Now you're starting to understand." "But that doesn't mean I'll let him take everything from me," Damein added. Sophie raised an eyebrow. "Everything?" "My family," he said quietly. "My life." "My future." Sophie nodded slowly. "Good." There was a sharp edge of satisfaction in her voice now "So we're finally on the same side." "For now," Damein replied. She chuckled. "I'll take that." He leaned back in the car seat "So what exactly is your plan?" Sophie's eyes gleamed. "Oh, Damein," she said. "You're going to love this." She paused for dramatic effect "First... we make sure Maya never trusts Lucas again." Damein didn't respond. "And then?" he asked. Sophie's voice turned colder. "Then we take everything he loves." A quiet silence followed. Finally, Damein spoke again. "When do we start?" Sophie smiled. "We already have."
