CHAPTER 1: THE RIVALRY IGNITE
Riverside High was known for one thing above all else: its reputation for academic excellence. It was a school where success was measured in grades, scholarships, and awards, and every student knew that to rise to the top, you had to be the best. But for Emily Carter and James Turner, being the best was more than just a goal—it was a battleground. Emily, with her sharp mind and disciplined approach to everything she did, was used to being at the top. She knew exactly how to study, how to play the game, and how to win. Nothing could break her focus. But then there was James, with his effortless charm, creativity, and natural talent for anything he put his mind to. He didn’t need to follow the rules; he made them. And ever since they were assigned to the same class in their first year of high school, they had been locked in a fierce academic rivalry that neither could afford to lose. It wasn’t just about grades anymore. It was personal. --- The Beginning of Their Competition Emily sat at the back of the classroom, her eyes glued to the clock, counting down the minutes until the start of the final exam for Advanced Placement Physics. Her study notes were spread out before her, organized neatly with color-coded tabs. She had spent the entire weekend revising. Every formula, every equation was etched into her mind. She had to get the highest score—not just to secure the scholarship that was on the line, but to remind herself that she was in control. And yet, her thoughts kept drifting to James, sitting two rows ahead of her. He was already scribbling on his notepad, probably solving complex problems in his head without breaking a sweat. His posture was relaxed, his confidence evident in the way he carried himself. He had a way of making everything look easy, while she struggled to stay one step ahead. It was a game of pride, and in this game, losing was not an option. When the bell rang, signaling the start of the exam, Emily’s focus sharpened. But as she reached for her pen, a sharp voice pierced the air. “Emily, don’t you think it’s a little too late for that last-minute cramming?” James’ voice was calm, almost teasing. He turned to glance at her with a grin, his blue eyes glinting mischievously. The words didn’t sting—he had said worse before—but the way he said it, with that arrogant smirk, made her blood boil. She shot him a quick glance, meeting his eyes. “Just making sure I don’t let you win by accident,” she replied coolly, her fingers tightening around the pen. He chuckled, clearly unbothered. “Well, don’t stress yourself out too much. I’m sure you’ll do fine.” The exam started, and Emily pushed him from her mind. Every second felt like a race, a ticking clock that mirrored the competition between them. But as the minutes passed, something strange began to happen. Her mind kept wandering, not to the equations in front of her, but to the way James’ casual demeanor seemed to haunt her. His words echoed in her head, the playful challenge of his tone lingering long after he’d turned back to his own test. --- The Mysterious Connection After the exam, as students filtered out of the classroom, Emily headed straight for her locker, trying to shake off the nagging feeling that something was off. She was used to being the best, but that feeling of being pushed by James, rather than competing alongside him, had begun to wear on her. It wasn’t just the competition—it was something more. She reached for her books, but then her eyes landed on something strange: a small, old envelope tucked into the corner of her locker. It wasn’t the kind of envelope the school used for official notices. This was a thick, faded paper, with a wax seal embossed on the front. Her heart skipped a beat. Opening it carefully, she found a single sheet of paper inside. The message was typed, its font old-fashioned and almost illegible, as if it had been printed years ago. The message read: "Stay away from James Turner. Your families’ past is darker than you know." Emily felt a chill run down her spine as she read the words over and over again. The name “Turner” lingered in her mind. She had never thought to question why James’ family always seemed so different from hers. Her mother, a renowned doctor, and James’ father, a successful businessman, had never seemed to interact. But they had crossed paths at the school once, years ago, when she was younger. Could there be more to their past than she realized? Before she could ponder it any further, a familiar voice interrupted her thoughts. “Emily, everything okay?” James’ voice was close, and when she turned, she saw him standing just a few feet away, his expression unreadable. Her pulse quickened, and she quickly shoved the letter into her bag. “Yeah,” she said, trying to sound casual. “Just… just tired, I guess.” James raised an eyebrow but said nothing more. Instead, he turned and walked away, leaving Emily standing in the hall, her mind spinning with questions. --- Cliffhanger That evening, Emily couldn’t stop thinking about the letter. She stared at the sealed envelope in her hands, wondering who could have sent it. And why? Then, in the silence of her room, her phone buzzed. It was a message from an unknown number. “If you want answers, meet me at the old library after school tomorrow. Don’t tell anyone.” Her heart raced. Was this the same person who had sent the letter? Was it someone trying to warn her—or perhaps manipulate her? And what was the connection between her family and James’? Emily had no choice. She had to find out. ---
