Chapter 1: The First Encounter
It was the first day of senior year at Vista Ridge High, and Daisy felt a familiar mix of excitement and anxiety. She adjusted the strap of her backpack and glanced nervously at the bustling crowd of students in the school courtyard. Daisy wasn’t like the other girls; she was thick, her curves often making her feel out of place in a world where slender was celebrated. But today, she told herself, would be different. This year, she was going to stand out for all the right reasons. As the bell rang, signaling the start of the first class, Daisy hurried to the hallway, her heart racing. She hadn’t yet spotted her best friend, Harper, but she had bigger concerns. Ken was in the same class this year—the lean, tan boy with dark brown eyes who had once been her childhood crush. Daisy’s stomach flipped as she remembered the long-forgotten flirtations they had shared during summer break years ago. Ken had always been popular, effortlessly cool, and had a smile that could melt any girl’s heart. And yet, Daisy had never expected him to take notice of her. Walking into the classroom, Daisy's eyes immediately searched for him. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Ken sitting near the window, laughing with his friends. The sunlight streamed in through the glass, casting a golden glow on his tousled hair. He looked perfect, the image of a California beach boy, and for a second, Daisy wondered if she was still the awkward girl from years ago, too scared to approach him. Ken’s gaze shifted, and their eyes locked. For a moment, time seemed to stretch out. Daisy couldn’t breathe, and she swore she saw a flicker of recognition in his expression. Was it possible he remembered her? He smiled, and in that moment, the world seemed to disappear. "Hey, Daisy," he called out as she walked in, his voice smooth and easy. Her heart raced even faster now, and a blush crept across her cheeks. "Hi, Ken," she managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper. She took a deep breath, gathering the courage to walk toward the desk next to him. She had always admired him from afar, but now it felt like fate was pushing them back together. Was this a sign? Ken’s friends, including his best friend, Aaron, looked at them curiously, but Ken seemed unfazed. He moved his books aside, making space for Daisy. “You can sit here if you want.” Daisy didn’t need to be told twice. She sank into the chair, her fingers brushing against his as she placed her books down. The subtle spark of electricity didn’t go unnoticed by either of them. For the next few minutes, the room buzzed with chatter, but Daisy couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed. She had spent the last few years wondering what could’ve been between them. Was he just being polite, or was there something more? “Do you have a plan for after graduation?” Ken asked, his voice low and casual, as though they had been friends for years. It was a question that caught Daisy off guard. After all, high school hadn’t been the easiest for her. Her parents had divorced, and the emotional weight of that had made her question a lot about her future. But here, in this moment, with Ken asking her about her life beyond high school, it felt like everything was about to change. "I’m not sure yet," she replied, keeping the vulnerability in her voice hidden beneath a calm exterior. “What about you?” Ken shrugged, his tan arm resting on the desk. “I think about traveling, you know? Seeing the world. It’s always been a dream of mine. Maybe go to college, but... who knows?” His eyes met hers again, and for a split second, Daisy saw something in them—an openness, a connection. It sent a shiver down her spine. The bell rang, signaling the start of class, and they both turned their attention to the front of the room. But Daisy couldn’t shake the feeling that this encounter was the beginning of something bigger, something she hadn’t expected. As the day went on, Daisy found herself replaying the conversation over and over in her mind. Was it just a friendly chat, or was Ken interested in her? She couldn’t deny the chemistry between them, but it was hard to tell if he saw her as more than just a classmate. Later that evening, as she sat at her desk, staring at the phone screen, Daisy couldn’t help but wonder if this was destiny at work. Would she and Ken find their way back to each other in a way she had always dreamed of? Or was this just a fleeting moment? She didn’t know the answer yet, but one thing was clear: her world had just shifted. And she wasn’t sure where it would take her.
