That night Lusie had gone to bed with wraps of bandages on her forearms and stomach. Her wrists and ankles were bruised to dark purple from the straps that had tightly held her down. Her head was fuzzy and she could not tell what happened but her body was in great pain. She was left alone in her room for days feeling the pain.
Tom came by with her medicine once a day then would come by later in the day to check the wrapped up wounds. He wouldn't talk while he was unwrapping the bandages. That's ok because Lusie was remembering how cruel him and Dr. Williams had been with their scalpulles and knives. At Toms touch to the opened wounds they made for her tissues Lusie flinched afraid.
Lusie wanted to cry. She was pretty sure her stomach cut would heal without a scar but her right forearm would leave a nasty scar. Not only had they tortured her skin but drugs had been pushed into her blood making Lusie become sensitive ten times more when Dr. William submerged her head into the water. He had held her head down keeping her from coming up causing her throat to burn and start to black out. Only when her body stopped struggling did he pull her out letting her throw up the water she had swallowed.
As time past and the more medicine Tom forced down her throat Lusie just became dazed. Her thoughts pondered on her parents and how her life went from normal to hell. She preferred her thoughts to the depressed feelings she was starting to have with the throbbing pain. Not even talking with her grandfather while it was just her in the room helped keep her spirits up. Lusie doubted she was going to be able to ever leave. She had not even heard a word from her parents in the week or more she had been here.
"Lusie" her grandfather said sitting on her bed corner next to her feet. He looked concerned for her. The pain she was going through was worse than he thought would happen. He could tell from the dazed look the medicine had fogged her eyesight. Her grandfather has been worrying about losing her. She may very well be consumed by the heavy depression and amnesia the shock treatments had started to cause.
Lusie turned her foggy gaze to him. She wondered why her grandfather even stayed by her side. When he was alive he had not seemed pleased to be around her. Whenever she had come to visit he would stay in the other room. They had never really had many conversations until after he had past. Lusie vaguely remembered the first time he had appeared.
"Why do you stay?" She finally asked.
"You and I are similar. I never told you when you would come over but...you remind me of when I first started to hear things."
"What do you mean?" Lusie's voice was soft. She was surprised by his words but the pain she was feeling made her voice being close to a whimper.
Her grandfather could see the pain Lusie was feeling in the sound of her voice to how tense her body laid on top of her thin blanket. Seeing her like this made him wish he was alive to take her out of this hell. Though when he was alive he had been terrified to be thrown into a hospital himself.
"When I was alive and 16 I started to hear voices. I thought it was my parents at first but one night the voices turned into an apperision. I would have plenty of sleepless nights. However I never told a soul knowing full well about these types of hospitals. Not even your grandma knew." He spoke trying to tell the story to his granddaughter to hopefully distract her from all the torture Lusie was in.
"If you were like me then why did you not tell me when you knew I was experiencing the same thing?" Lusie felt a knot in her throat feeling the emotion of hurt and realizing she wasn't the only one.
Her grandfather was silent not completely sure how to phrase the words he had thought about plenty of times in his life. He had known about Lusies ability by the jumpiness in every move she made. He had wanted to share with her. Yet all the years he held in the secret made it difficult to speak of it. As he had laid on his deathbed he felt the regret of never being there for her.
"I kept the secret for so long. I was not sure how to say the words. I regretted every moment you would come over to visit and the words got stuck in my throat like led. The feeling just grew as the years went by." His voice seemed shaky as if he was still feeling so.
Lusie could understand not wanting to talk about it. After all her parents only ever thought about how much it was a problem. She could not fault her grandfather for keeping it to himself not to worry others. Lusie was just happy to finally know she wasn't alone. Even though she had to find out while laying on a thin blanket on her uncomfortable cotton mattress with other patients screams could be heard at a distance.
Her eyelids become heavy and sleep was trying to drag her down. Yet Lusie did not want to. She wanted to learn more about her grandfather's ability. Sleep was persistent and the grandfather welcomed the sleepiness for her. He knew if she was to survive Lusie needed as much rest and hope that she could get.
Lusie's eyes closed and she began having deep breaths that would usually cause her pain. In sleep she did not feel any of the pain. Her grandfather waited a while longer making sure she was asleep before drifting through the walls. Someone had told him he needed to go to the only person strong enough in this hell hole that could lift his granddaughter up. Even if she would not see him anymore.
He past room after patient room trying to avoid eye contact or notice the horrible conditions they were in. He only stopped moving when he entered a completely dark room with a strapped jacket teenage boy. The boy was blindfolded restricting the guys sense of sight. However his hearing had grown stronger from the lose. Lusie's grandfather stared at the demon possessed teen wondering if he would really be able to help his granddaughter.
The guy's head moved up as if he had sensed the grandfather's spirit in the room. Knowing he could not see the spirit the grandfather was shocked to be acknowledged. Silence was in the room in thick layers. Taking a chance the grandfather took a deep breath and thought, I will do anything to help Lusie get through this.
