Kate's pov.
I hastily sifted through the stark papers searching for it. "Ugh, where is it? " I mumbled and then continued to search through the drawer but all I found was some empty candy wrapper, a half-eaten doughnut and some files that contained information on the waterfront. I wonder what that's about? Anyway, I got onto my knees and inspected the floor. For the most part, the floor was perfectly normal till I reached under the desk where the floor sounded hollow. Bingo! I found his safe. It must contain most of his secrets. I then heard footsteps approaching the door and I panicked, so I jumped out the window. Thank God I carried a grappling hook today otherwise I would be in a real pickle. I would have ended up splatting on the sidewalk. I hid at the ledge of the window as the person approached and took a seat at the desk, picked up a folder from the drawer, stood up and walked to the window. " Kate, I know you're here or should I call you Rose? " Jake said and my body froze. I clung onto the grappling hook tightly and stayed put, not moving a muscle. " Come on Kate, don't you know that it is rude to decline an invitation, come in, and maybe, just maybe, I won't kill you, think about it," he said, his voice going to a very low octave. He was practically whispering now. With a sigh, I flung myself back into the window and tackled him to the ground. Now I was straddling him, which was awkward, till I got a good look at his face and realized that it was just Arion, I swear this guy. " Get up dufus, " I said, holding out my hand to him. Which he took. " How did you find me? " I questioned him angrily, making him rub the back of his neck and look away from me nervously. And he remained quiet. " Arion, answer me" I growled, making him shrink away from me. "B_butter cup, you are probably going to be mad when I tell you the truth, " he mumbled while looking at the floor, "B_but, your dad made me promise to keep an eye on you. " he finished nervously. Now how could I be mad at him? Dad had always been very persuasive and since Arion was the only person I was close with, it made sense that he would somehow get him to protect me, not that I needed it but that was my Dad, overprotective.
We left Dragon Corp and went to an ice cream shop to talk. We took our seats at one of the booths located near the window. I got vanilla and chocolate while he got cookies and cream. I turned to him and indicated for him to regale me with the tale of how my father got him to agree to spy on me. " Well, do you remember the necklace I got you for your fifteenth birthday? " he asked while scooping his ice cream out of the cup with the plastic spoon. "Yeah, " I said, recalling the time when he gave me the necklace that now rested on my neck, I unconsciously traced the little circle at the bottom of the little chain. " Well, it has a tracking device," he added and looked at him and he gulped. " So what were you thinking? " I asked him, throwing my hands up in exasperation, " You could have blown your cover, not to mention mine, " I said in one breath before sighing loudly. Our meeting was interrupted when my phone rang, breaking the silence. When I checked the caller ID, I saw that it was Devon. "Hello? " I spoke. On the phone and waited for him to respond, but instead, I received silence for a while, and then I heard a voice that did not belong to Devon. "Give it up, you can't win, I will take over and everyone will think it was you, even Father and Dixie like they did last time.," there was a pause before the voice continued "You know, I hear the government is watching your every move, you need to be careful, not that it will help you, I mean, after all, today is the day you meet your maker. " After I heard that, I rushed out of the ice cream shop and pulled my tablet out of my purse and started tracking the phone call. I hurried to my car and quickly dug into my stash of disguises and settled on the black-haired wig and joggers with black vans and a blue tee. I then hurriedly drove to the location that was on the outskirts of town. Not that I care for him much, but I can't let my subject get killed before we can convict him. Though he is kind of cute. But that is beside the point. I crawled into the vent shafts of a huge building. The phone was coming from the top floor. The ground floor was full of guards and I had to use one of my gadgets to put them to sleep. We call them the sleep bombs. It's like a smoke bomb, but instead of smoke, it produces a potent sleeping gas that knocks out the person for ten hours. By the time I reached the seventh floor, I was so tired but powered through till I reached my destination. From my hiding place in the vent, I could see Devon tied to a chair while another guy sat in front of him and was holding a water bottle and a face towel which he placed on Devon's face and then poured the contents of the bottle out onto the towel. Waterboarding is so immature, but oh well, guess a bad guy may look all tough on the outside, but deep down, they are all children. I silently got out of the vent and hid behind a crate. " Well, well well, so it's time Dev, you were always dads favourite. '' The voice paused and I realised it belonged to a man who was standing at the door. " But after tonight, everyone will think that you are me." he walked over to Devon and squared next to him. He snapped his fingers and the man who was sitting in the chair picked the towel off Devon's face. He gasped for air and then the guy pinched his cheeks and said tauntingly, "So I guess since no one has come to your rescue, no one cares much for you. " "You're wrong. " Devon said weakly, right before going limp. I took this opportunity to jump out of my hiding place and scared the two bad guys. " I don't think you should count on all your dreams coming true," I said, taking a fighting stance. After a quick survey of the situation, I decided that beating them would have been so easy. I softened my features and stood up straight, pulling my mask over my face and got one of the sleep bombs that I had left. I raised my hand and hurled the bomb to the ground next to the two criminals. “ what is this?” one of them asked but was cut off by a yawn. Soon both of them were fast asleep and so was Devon. I gently untied the rope that had been used to fasten him to the chair. I hoisted him over my shoulder and made my way back to my car.
