Chapter One
Sophia The pregnancy test trembled in Sophia Bennett’s fingers as she stood before the towering glass desk of Marcus Blackwood, CEO of Blackwood Corporations. Her heart slammed against her ribs like it was going to tear out of her chest. Two pink lines stared back at her. The results were clear, undeniable, and terrifying. She had rehearsed this moment a hundred times over on the elevator ride up to the 78th floor, but nothing prepared her for the way Marcus’s cold and impatient eyes lifted from his laptop, as if she were just another item on his agenda. “Whatever it is, Bennett, make it quick,” Marcus said, his deep voice curt and disinterested. “I have a board meeting in twelve minutes.” Sophia swallowed hard, tasting the metallic edge of fear. She stepped closer and placed the white plastic stick directly on top of the contract he was reviewing. The two pink lines seemed to glow under the harsh LED lights. “I’m pregnant,” she said, her voice steadier than she felt. “And it's yours.” For three full seconds, the only sound in the vast corner office was the low hum of the air conditioning. Marcus stared at the test like it was a foreign object that had somehow contaminated his pristine workspace. Slowly, he leaned back in his black leather chair, his tailored charcoal suit stretching across his broad shoulders. The same broad shoulders that her hair had cascaded down in hot, steamy nights of passion. Those same shoulders. “Pregnant,” he repeated flatly, as if testing the word. His expression didn’t change. There was no shock, no joy, nothing. “Yes.” Sophia lifted her chin, refusing to shrink under that icy gaze. “Almost seven weeks. I thought you deserved to know first.” Marcus’s jaw tightened. He picked up the test with two fingers, as if picking up discarded trash and examined it for a moment, then dropped it into the wastebasket beside his desk with deliberate finality. “Clean that up on your way out,” he said coolly. Sophia’s stomach dropped. “Did you hear what I just said? I’m carrying your child, Marcus.” “I heard.” He rose from his chair in one fluid motion, all six-foot-three of him towering over her. The floor-to-ceiling windows behind him framed the glittering city skyline like a kingdom he ruled with an iron fist. “And now I’m going to speak clearly so there’s no misunderstanding.” He walked around the desk until he stood directly in front of her. The scent of his expensive sandalwood cologne, wrapped around her, triggering memories of tangled sheets and breathless nights that now felt like they belonged to another lifetime. “I don’t want children,” Marcus stated, each word precise and cutting through the pain that already sat in the center of her heart. “I never have. This was never part of our arrangement. You knew that.” “I didn’t plan this,” Sophia shot back, anger rising to meet her fear. “We were careful, but it happened anyways. This is your baby too, you know.” Marcus’s lips curved into a humorless smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “My baby?” He reached into the inner pocket of his suit jacket and pulled out a sleek black checkbook. With swift and practiced movements, he wrote out a check and tore it free. He held it out between them. “Ten million dollars. Take it, terminate the pregnancy and disappear completely from my life and my company. Change your name if you have to. I don’t care how you do it, just make sure this problem…. And you, goes away.” Sophia stared at the check, her vision blurring with hot tears she refused to let fall. She wasn't going to let him see her weak. The number swam before her eyes. It was more money than she could ever dream of. It was more than enough to pay off every debt her family had and then some. Her hand moved before her brain could stop it. The sharp crack of her palm meeting his cheek echoed through the silent office. Marcus’s head snapped slightly to the side. A faint red mark bloomed on his flawless jaw. He didn’t flinch an inch. He didn’t even look surprised. “You heartless bastard,” Sophia whispered, her voice shaking with fury. “You think you can just write a check and erase your own child? Like I’m some disposable employee you can pay off?” She snatched the check from his fingers, tore it once, twice, three times, and let the pieces flutter to the marble floor like snow. “I don’t want your filthy money,” she said, stepping back. “And I don’t want you anywhere near my child. You don’t deserve to be a father.” Marcus watched her with those unreadable gray eyes, his cheek still bearing the faint imprint of her hand. “You’re making a mistake, Sophia.” “No,” she said, already turning toward the door, her heels clicking sharply against the floor. “The mistake was ever letting you touch me.” She paused at the threshold and rested one hand on the heavy glass door. She looked back at the man who had just tried to erase their unborn child with cold cash. “Enjoy ruling your empty empire, Marcus Blackwood. I hope it keeps you warm at night.” Without waiting for a reply, Sophia Bennett walked out of his office and out of his life, the echo of her footsteps were the only sound following her down the long corridor. Behind he r, Marcus Blackwood stood motionless, staring at the torn pieces of the check scattered at his feet.
