The day it all changed
It started as a normal day, Cara woke to her alarm and went to the bathroom. Then she noticed how quiet the house was, no cooking sounds from downstairs. Mum would normally have breakfast on the go by now. Suddenly it struck Cara today was important. It was her 18th birthday. So where the hell was mum and dad? Surely the constant reliable, if somewhat boring parents hadn't suddenly flaked and abandoned her? Ok, she was being dramatic but life was always routine. Mum and dad left each morning to work in the stuffy museum exactly 20 mins after Cara left for School. They were there every morning, unless on a business trip. She ran downstairs passing Dad's home office, which was open. Wierd he kept it locked all the time, Cara had never been in that room. Glancing in "dad is messy" she giggled to herself looking at all the boxes and books on every available surface haha. She continued to the kitchen, no cooking but mum and dad were sitting at the kitchen table, looking really serious.
"Morning sweetie, Happy Birthday," said Dad as they both came and hugged her. Cara noticed a large book on the table. Not the expected cards and presents that were standard for birthday mornings. "sit down honey, today is a big day and the sooner we get started the better" said mum with a strange look on her face. Cara took a seat at the table, well this isn't the morning I expected. She looked at her mum's face, the same ice-blue eyes Cara had, but where mum had white-blonde hair Cara had her dad's jet black hair. It made a stark contrast to her eyes. She liked the way she looked an exact split between her parents and unique.
"So today is a big day, 18, and time for us to let you in on a family secret. Time for you to learn your true destiny" Before Cara could speak dad placed the book in front of her, there was handwritten text and drawing of animals a few words stood out Beast, Monster, Abomination. She looked to her parents, "what is going on mum? dad? what are you talking about secrets and destiny?
Mum pulled her own chair closer to Cara and started speaking in an excited way " we don't work at the museum, its our base. We are hunters. Not like deer, we hunt supernatural creatures. There are evil beings that should never have been allowed to exist. Our family have and always will be hunters. The skills are passed down and come alive at 18 yrs old. You will now begin your training. You will learn to track, capture and kill the monsters. You will become the greatest hunter of all time. You were born at the same time as the Alpha king. He is the biggest threat to humanity and it is written the hunter born within the same moon cycle will carry the power to destroy the hold these monsters have and end this war once and for all. That's you, you are or will be the greatest hunter ever born. Your training will start tonight" Cara laughed and looked around for the cameras, she was a cheerleader, straight A student. Her parents were steady boring, normal. Where they going insane she had heard tumors could cause personality changes.
"Cara this is important" her dad interrupted her thoughts. He was showing her a double page in the old book, it was a family tree. She was there so was her mum and dad. It went back centuries, each one before mum and dad stated fallen in battle. " We aren't messing with you, this is your birthright. We have always done what we can to give you a normal life for as long as we can. But your powers will arise tonight and your training has to start. He will feel you come into your power. He will start hunting you hoping to get you before your training is done. We can't allow that. You must find him in your time and on your terms." Cara didn't believe them, this was some weird joke. It had to be A hunter? Powers? She pushed against the table to stand up, she needed space and the table went flying across the kitchen. "what the hell?" Her mum walked towards her and Cara lifted her hand up and told her NO don't come closer. Her mum froze mid-step, Cara lowered her hand and her mum moved. She tried again held her dad up to her dad and he froze, she could see him trying to move, but it was as if he was held in a forcefield. Ok so maybe not a joke then? She said quietly as she lowered her hand and her dad was able to move.
"We need to get out of here now, we need to get to our base to start your training" they hurried her out the door into the car and started driving towards the museum. Cara was wondering exactly how strong these powers were? would she get more? Could she really kill someone? This Alpha King? But if he was evil then it was her duty. She had so many questions and so much to learn. She suddenly felt like this was the best birthday ever, she wasn't ordinary, she was special. she had a destiny and she was going to be the greatest warrior of all time, she could feel it. Alpha Wolf king won't know whats hit him.
