*Flashback*
Mother is running through the woods yet again, from what? I'm not sure. All I know is she tells me to close my eyes tight and not say a word, I can't even cry unless we want to be caught. He blonde hair is fluttering behind her as the wind whips around us. We hear a howl in the distance and I feel her pulse speed up and she begins to breathe heavily. I squirm a little wanting to try and comfort her but she places her hand on the back of my head clutching me to her chest.
"Shhhh love everything will be ok" She tries to reassure me and I grab hold of her shirt trying to pull myself even closer. She comes to an old red Ford Taurus that she had covered with branches a few months ago and frantically pulls the branches away placing me behind the driver seat gently kisses my forehead and reminds me to buckle my seat belt.
I feel the seat belt click when she gets in and buckles hers and gives me a gentle smile while throwing the car into reverse making the tires squeal in retaliation for just a moment until we make it to the black top just six yards away.
Mother throws the car into drive and once again we will start a new life in some insignificant town, different day same story. I rest my head on the car window bidding the place where I just had my eighth birthday goodbye. As the light of the moon washes over us I think I seesomething in the woods and try to focus a little harder. I realize that there's something following the car and you can start to hear growls in the distance. I look to my mother scared of the beasts following us when out of no where a big knarly looking brown wolf charges into the side of the car making my mother run down into a revine. The car rolls for what seemed like forever. When it finally stops the car is pinned between two trees on its side and mother was unconscious.
I got my seat belt off and climbed my way to mother and started to cry. I felt her comforting part fall gently on my back. "Shhhhh I need you to be strong" was all she said before I felt the car being drug backwards. I started whimpering and the car was being rolled back to its wheels. There were people shouting but the wolves were gone. When a man opened mothers door I began to plead. "Please sir my mother she's hurt really bad" I sniffle and wiped the tears on the back of my sleeve. "I'll do anything just don't let her die" I hugged onto the man's leg hoping he'd heart my pleads of mercy.
The man patted my head and sent me with another man who put me in a black SUV to get warm. I was thankful until I saw the first man grab hold of my mother by the neck. I tried to get out but they had me locked in so I started to pound on the windows. I was yelling and screaming trying to get someone to listen. I did this for close to an hour and a half when we pulled up to a house that looked familiar. It was an old brick plantation home with three stories. The first man was tall and his shoulders were so wide it was hard to believe he'd fit through a doorway without having to turn side ways. He had salt and pepper hair and wore just a mustache. The car that had my mother drove to the back of the house and we were parked in the front. He opened the door and gestured for me to get out of the vehicle.
I shook my head no and crossed my arms "I want to see my mother! " I yelled
"You'll do best to mind your manners with me boy" the man said with a deep but dangerously calm voice. I stared at the man not prepared to move and the man sighed.
"This isn't how I wanted to tell you this but you are my son" I felt my eyes bulge out of my head and I shook my head. "Mother told me my father died in battle"
The man sits and thinks on this for a few minutes and shrugs his shoulders. "You can believe what you will but when you get good and hungry you just come on in and get you some food"
My stomach makes a traitorous sounding grumble as it's been a day and a half since I've had a proper meal and I jump out of my seat walking next to this strangers side.
"By the way my name is Jebek what's yours?" The man said. The rest of the conversation went pretty smoothly and after I got a full belly they let me sleep in the most comfortable bed and I alert till morning.
The next morning I was awakened by the sounds of drums and when I peek out the window I seea crowd of people gathered around a stage. I go downstairs just in time to see someone light the stage on fire and to my horror I hear my mother screaming.
I run with everything I had ready to throw myself into the flames to save her but an arm caught me. I try to fight off who ever is holding me back trying to get to mother. I see a peace wash over her face as she looks at me and smiles. "Shhhh love it's all going to be ok" She says. As soon as those words leave her lips a cloud of black smoke devours her like it's last meal. I kick and scream and I feel moisture in the air. "Wake up!" I hear someone yelling as I'm fighting
"Wake up!" I hear it louder and the feeling of ice cold water is being dumped on me. That's when I realized I was dreaming again.
I look up and give a sheepish grin to this Goddess of a woman. She probably thinks I'm a fool.
"Uhhh... hey" I say rubbing the back of my neck. I try to get her penitrating gaze off me by using small talk. "So I hope you slept well..." as those words left my mouth I feel Cole hit me upside my head with his tail.
"We need to get moving" She says with this brooding look.
"Ok love where to..." I'm cut off by her putting a hand up to stop me from walking.
"Let's get one thing clear" she says then brushes her hair out of her face with the hand that was on my chest. "Yes we are mates but that doesn't mean I trust you" hearing this Cole puts his head on his paws with his ears back whimpering. "Our last mate rejected us and if given enough time you'll see we are a monster" Cole growls he doesn't tolerate disrespect very well and we are not her ex mate.
I pin her up against the cave wall and she is breathing heavy. I look at her lips and the shock on her face. "Let me clear things up I'm not your ex mate and no matter what anyone says I see no monster."
