Chapter One - The Omega No One Wanted
The moon hung low over the Ashwood Pack, bathing the village in silver light. Most wolves loved the full moon. It was a time of celebration, strength, and pride. For Luna, it was another night to survive. She tightened her thin cloak around her shoulders as the icy wind swept through the forest. Her hands were raw from scrubbing the packhouse floors all day, and her stomach growled painfully. She hadn't eaten since yesterday morning. "Move faster, useless omega!" A harsh voice echoed behind her. Luna flinched instinctively. She turned to see Beta Rowan marching toward her with an angry expression. "I-I'm sorry," she whispered, lowering her eyes. He grabbed the heavy bucket she carried and dumped the freezing water over her head. "You call this clean?" he barked. "The Alpha's hall still smells dirty." The freezing water soaked through her worn dress immediately. "I'm sorry..." "That's all you ever say." He shoved her so hard she stumbled into the mud. Several pack members laughed as they walked past. "No wonder nobody wants her." "She's probably the weakest omega ever born." "I heard even rogues wouldn't take her." Luna kept her head down. If she cried... They would laugh harder. So she stayed silent. --- Luna had never known kindness. Her parents had died when she was six during a rogue attack. After that, Alpha Victor had allowed her to stay in the pack—but only because she could work. She cooked. She cleaned. She washed everyone's clothes. She gathered herbs. She repaired clothing. She even slept in the storage shed behind the packhouse. She wasn't considered family. She wasn't even considered a real pack member. Just...useful. --- That evening, the pack gathered for dinner. The smell of roasted meat drifted through the open windows. Luna stood outside. Waiting. When everyone finished eating... She would be allowed to collect the dirty dishes. Sometimes... If she was lucky... Someone left behind a small piece of bread. Tonight... Nothing. Only bones. Her stomach twisted painfully. She quietly picked one up, hoping there might still be a little meat. "Disgusting." A sharp voice stopped her. It was Iris. The Alpha's daughter. Beautiful. Proud. Cruel. She kicked the bone out of Luna's hand. "Even dogs deserve food more than you." The others laughed. Luna bent down to pick up the bone. Iris stepped on her fingers. Pain shot through her hand. "I said leave it." Luna bit her lip until she tasted blood. No tears. Not here. Never here. --- Later that night... The Alpha summoned everyone to the courtyard. A messenger from another pack had arrived. "The Blackthorn Pack requests permission to cross our northern territory tomorrow," the messenger announced. A murmur spread through the crowd. Blackthorn. Everyone knew that name. The strongest pack in the region. Their Alpha... Kael Blackthorne. Some called him the Moon's Chosen. Others called him the Blood Alpha. It was said he had defeated three rogue packs before turning twenty-three. Some believed he had never lost a fight. Others whispered that his wolf was so powerful even Alphas feared him. Luna had never seen him. She doubted she ever would. Someone like him would never notice someone like her. --- The next morning... Before sunrise... Luna was sent into the forest alone to gather herbs. "Don't come back until the basket is full," Beta Rowan ordered. "It may snow..." "I don't care." She nodded quietly. "Yes, Beta." --- Hours passed. The deeper she walked... The colder the forest became. Snow began to fall. Her fingers turned numb. The basket grew heavier. She finally found the last herb growing beside a frozen stream. As she reached for it— A low growl echoed behind her. Luna froze. Slowly... She turned. Three rogues stood between the trees. Their eyes glowed golden. Their clothes were torn. Their wolves pressed close beneath their skin. One of them smiled. "Well..." "What do we have here?" "An omega." Another sniffed the air. "And she's alone." Fear gripped Luna's heart. She backed away. "I-I don't want any trouble." The largest rogue laughed. "We do." He stepped forward. "Run." Luna didn't hesitate. She turned and sprinted through the trees. Branches tore at her arms. Snow made the ground slippery. Behind her... She heard them laughing. They weren't even trying yet. They were hunting. Her lungs burned. Her vision blurred. She stumbled over a tree root. The basket flew from her hands. Her ankle twisted painfully. "No..." She tried to stand. Pain exploded through her leg. The rogues emerged from the trees. Slow. Confident. Like wolves surrounding injured prey. "Game over." One reached toward her. Luna squeezed her eyes shut. Please... Moon Goddess... Help me... A deafening roar shattered the forest. The ground seemed to tremble. Every bird took flight. The rogues froze. Their confidence vanished instantly. "What...?" A massive black wolf burst from the trees like a living shadow. Its fur was darker than the night. Its silver eyes burned with terrifying fury. The air itself felt heavier beneath its Alpha aura. The rogues staggered back. "An...Alpha..." The black wolf lunged. In one swift movement, it slammed the first rogue into the snow. The second barely had time to shift before he was thrown into a tree with crushing force. The third turned to flee. The enormous wolf chased him into the darkness. A scream echoed through the forest. Then... Silence. Luna stared in shock. The great wolf returned, its chest rising and falling steadily. Snow clung to its thick black fur, and its silver eyes met hers. It stepped closer. She should have been terrified. Instead... For the first time in years... She felt safe. The wolf lowered its head, sniffing the air around her. Then its eyes widened. A deep, stunned rumble vibrated from its chest. Far away, hidden beneath the wind, a single word echoed in the mind of the wolf's human half. Mate.
