Chapter one
The leaves of the corn crops are sharp as she runs through them. The moonlight dances of her skin . The cold air of the night breeze blows through her pigtails .She can feel the dead leaves crunch underneath her feet . With every step she takes she can feel it. She is closer. Her heart is racing faster and faster . It feels as though her lungs are going to collapse with every step she takes. As she stands still to catch her breath she can hear the barn door open and she knows exactly where he is heading.
She looks up at the moon and she knows which direction to run further. She continues to run knowing he will be in total shock when she finds him. Hide and seek was one of her favorite things to do with her twin brother Johnny. Ever since they were five maybe six years old they had been playing hide and seek in the cornfields now 5 years later they are still playing and till this day Emily is undefeated. The very cornfields they helped their dad plant and crop. Suddenly she stops in her tracks almost falling over because she stopped to fast. Her running and thinking was interrupted by the most horrific scream she has ever heard in her life. It was Johnny. She knew something was very wrong and ran as fast as her little 12 year old legs could carry her.
"Emily! Johnny!" Her dad is screaming out of breath. He obviously heard the scream as well . "It came from the barn Daddy" she yelled back knowing he was searching for that . "EMILY STAY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE" he yelled back . But she was not about to leave her twin brother alone she knew her dad was far behind her and right now her brother sounded as though he needed her. She continued running towards the barn. She reached the barn out of breath and her body had never been this tired but the adrenaline kept her body going. The awful screaming had stopped and it was dead quite again. All she could hear was the wind barely blowing trough the crops. She had never been this scared in her entire life not even the time she broke her arm and had to go to the hospital.
She looked up at the old barn. It was a tall building which always gave her the creeps , but Johnny needed her and she wasn't about to let her brother down. She continued walking towards the big doors of the barn , it felt as though someone or something was watching her every move. When she reached the barn doors it was opened a bit but it was not opened wide enough for her to go trough without opening it further. The wood doors feel cold on her hands , with a slight push she opens the door. The sound of the door opening echo's through the barn. The darkness of the barn is interrupted by die dim light of the moon. She walks in slowly. She suddenly stops when she sees a tall figure almost man like. The fear took over her body and she couldn't move . All she could do was stare at the figure. As soon as her eyes adjusted to the darkness she realized that the tall almost man like figure was just a scare crow her dad has been wanting to put up for a while now but never seemed to have the time for. She continued searching for any sign of her brother. She was just about to go to the back of the barn when a tall figure came running towards her. It was her dad. She ran to him holding on to him as though he was the life itself. "Emily I told you to stay where you were , have you seen your brother ? What happened? Are you hurt ? Why was he screaming like that?" her dad asked out of breath from the running. "I don't know where he is or what happened , I ran here as fast as I can daddy but I can't find him" she answered bursting in to tears "It's okay everything will be okay , Emily I need you to go check at the back of the barn if he is there , I'll go outside to see if he is there."
Emily could see her dad was very worried and just did what he asked despite the fact that every square inch of her body just wanted to hold on to him. She took the flash light he handed to her and turned it on. The light was very dim but it was better than nothing. With one foot in front of the other she got to the back of the barn. She started shinning the flashlight from right to left. Suddenly she stopped. Her heart sank faster than the flashlight fell to the ground. There he was. Johnny. Her twin brother. Laying down on the ground. Lifeless . With a pitchfork driven through his chest. A loud scream came out of Emily . And then everything went dark as she fell into the arms of her father. She woke up to lights flashing . Red. And . Blue . And . Then . Red. Again.
She was hoping it was all just a bad dream but came to the quick realization that she was living in a nightmare. Her bestfriend. Her beloved twin brother was gone forever. Dead. The cops say he must have been laying there hiding from me when the pitchfork fell from the top floor and went right through him. A freak accident they called it. The doctor said he lived for about 3 minutes before he died . That's why we heard the screaming. They said he was better of with a fast death because there would've been no way to save him. That night Emily lost a piece of herself she could never get back. At the funeral everyone looked at her as though she had been the one who drove a pitchfork through her own brothers chest. And at school things got even worst. Those who didn't ask her how she was doing and smothering her with pity were most likely the ones who bullied her and said it was her fault her beloved brother had died.
Children can be cruel. She found that out the hard way when one day about a month after her brothers death she found a note in her locker saying it should've been her that died that night and not Johnny. You see ever since they were little kids everyone always loved Johnny more than her even if they were twins. Johnny just had this personality that everyone seemed to love. There was always this unspoken about comparison between the two of them , even Emily loved Johnny more than she did herself. Johnny had accepted her unconditionally and she was pretty sure he was the only reason she had any friends. But now his gone and she is all alone. Never in her life she had felt this alone. She had this constant feeling of emptiness inside her. Even her own parents couldn't fill the void. After Johnny's death her mother lived in complete silence and her father through himself in work at the farm. Most days he would go work before the sun even came up and only come home after 11pm. Her once happy family was now gone and filled with darkness , loneliness and misery. She hated the farm because it took her brother away from her. She hated school because everyone judged her. She hated the house because it had happy memories in. She hated her parents because they weren't there for her. She hated Johnny for leaving her all alone in the world. But mostly she hated herself because it should've been her.
Emily was very smart , she had always been smart so she applied to boarding schools a cross the country. She finally got her chance. A chance to start over. Were nobody knew her or her story. To everyone else she was just another farm girl wanting a better education than what the small towns has to offer. And that's exactly the way she wanted it. In six years she only made one friend , Katy. She was a rich girl , whose life from the outside looking in was just as lonely as Emily's life. They understood each other. Katy was such a extraordinary escape from the pain Emily had to deal with. Every holiday Emily would go with Katy and she always mad up some excuse not to go home to the farm. The last two days of every holiday she went home but these two days usually felt like a eternity. She tried her best reconnecting with her parents but she was pretty sure she had a better chance connecting with the walls. Her dad looked old an tired from all the work , and her mom grew even more lifeless than she was before.
At the age of 18 Emily had to decide what to do with the rest of her life and since going home to the farm was certainly not a option she applied to the same collage as Katy , The University of Illinois , which was Katy's dream ever since they were 12 years old and just became best friends.
