Chapter 4:

Xavier: I arrived to the ballroom early. Only the servants could be seen doing last minute preparations. Their was a couple of men behind the cedar bar washing glasses and stocking up an extensive collection of alcohol. The band that would be playing for the evening was tuning there instruments on stage. Several maids set silver plates on a table big enough to seat fifty. Pink roses lined the center of the table in clear vases. I noticed name plates were being set up at each seat. I walked along the table, hoping to find where Alpha would be seated. I’m not sure why I care, but I hoped she would be near me. My search was interrupted when Strauss called out my name. Strauss and Edgar, my Gamma, stood at the bar. “Do we have good seats this year,” Strauss asked. “What are you two doing here this early?” Strauss lifted his glass. “Pre-gaming.” “He’s hoping to find a woman tonight,” Edgar said in his ever present monotone voice. “Speaking of women, is it true? Is The Sun Pack’s Alpha a female?” “Yes.” Strauss gave a low whistle. “Never thought something like that would happen.” “Same here, but I saw her initiation. She is the daughter of Alpha William.” “Are her skills to the level of most Alphas,” Edgar asked. I thought back to our race. Alpha may not have won, but I had to run at my top speed just to beat her. “Her skills are more impressive than I thought, but I haven’t seen much. We’ll find out tomorrow.” “Are you worried, Xavier,” Strauss asked with a glint of amusement. “Not at all. How could a woman beat me?” “Don’t be so arrogant.” I turned to see Alpha standing with that daring look in her green eyes. She had on a strapless white mermaid gown that accentuated every curve. Her long red hair flowed down her back in curls. I thought she looked beautiful last night, but tonight she looked like an angel. “I’m a lot stronger than you think.” She stood with a man on either side of her. One looked like a ken doll with neatly groomed blond hair and blue eyes. The other had black hair slicked back and hazel eyes that seemed to look me over with concern and a bit of annoyance. “Who are your friends?” “My Beta, Saphir.” She gestured to the man eyeing me. “And my Gamma, Mason.” She motioned to the ken doll. “Nice to meet you,” I said shaking hands with both of them. “These are my men. Strauss is my second in command, and this is Edgar, my Gamma.” Alpha shook hands with both. “And your name,” Edgar questioned. She gave him a smile. “You can call me Alpha.” Edgar seemed a bit taken aback. “My name is Alpha.” “That’s a unique name,” Strauss spoke up. “Would you like a drink?” “Red wine, please.” She gave him a smile and it didn’t sit right with me. She shouldn’t be so friendly with a man she just met. I pushed the annoying thought away. “No whiskey this time,” I asked with a smirk. “Are you taking it easy this time, Alpha Alpha?” She gave me a knowing smile. “Just warming up. I wouldn’t want to drink you under the table.” “I’m not worried. You seemed like a lightweight last night. Isn’t that why I accompanied you to your room?” To my delight her cheeks flushed red. “Don’t make it sound like that! I would never invite you to my room in that context. You’re not my type!” Her eyes were daring me to suggest otherwise. Saphir and Mason laughed like it was a joke. “Hello, Young Alphas.” I sighed at the sound of Daniel’s voice. “Alpha Daniel. So nice to have some decent company finally,” she said glaring at me. That was my cue to leave. I grabbed a scotch and walked over to the lounge area at the end of the room. Large opened double doors lined the area, leading to a terrace, that let in a light breeze. I sat on one of the couches and watched as Alpha was speaking to Daniel and his Luna, Sarah. He introduced her to Beta Lester and Gamma Troy. She was laughing at something they had said. Her melodic tone reached my ears like a lullaby. Saphir whispered something in her ear. Unfortunately, even with my heightened hearing I couldn’t hear what he said. My wolf and I growled. They seemed close and I didn’t like it. He was too friendly with the leader of his pack. “Why are you growling like a mad dog,” Sterling asked from behind me. “Alpha. Something about her seems to keep bothering me. This is why woman shouldn’t be Alphas,” I said with irritation. I heard a female chuckle. “You were right, Derick. He seems on edge.” I turned to find Derick with his Luna, Molly. “Hello, Luna Molly. How’s the pups?” She gave me a wide smile. “Very excited to be having a sister on the way,” she said rubbing her stomach. I bowed. “Congratulations.” Raising, I said, “Three pups, huh? This calls for a celebration. Let’s grab a drink.” We arrived at the bar. Alpha and her men were still there chatting, along with Strauss and Edgar. Luckily, Daniel was off somewhere else. “Bartender eight shots of your finest whiskey.” I gave Alpha a look over my shoulder. “You’re joining the celebration, aren’t you?” “What are we celebrating?” “Molly and I are expecting our third pup,” Derick grinned. “Congratulations,” Alpha said excitedly. “Alpha Derick, this is my Beta Saphir. He is also expecting.” “Did you bring your mate,” Molly asked. “She’s too far into her pregnancy to travel.” She nodded in understanding. Molly turned to Alpha. “It’s nice to meet you Alpha Alpha. Derrick has told me so much about you. It’s an honor to meet a female Alpha.” She beamed. “Thank you. I look forward to the ranking. I’m going to have these guys running with their tails between their leg.” “Unless there's a race involved.” I said giving her a smirk. She rolled her eyes at me and turned so her back was facing me. “I was an only child. Saphir is the closest thing I have to a brother. It must be nice to have a big family.” Derick and Molly beamed. You could see the love between them as he rubbed her stomach. I grabbed two shots off the counter and handed one to Derick. “Let’s toast to the father to be.” Everyone raised their drinks. “To Derick and Molly, may your child be strong and your bloodline continue to rule The Blue Dawn Pack.” Everyone cheered before drinking there whiskey. “What are we celebrating?” I turned to find the brunette that was in Alpha’s room this morning. Maybe I’d finally get to figure out who this woman was. Alpha: Somehow during the festivities I had forgotten about Tallia. She stood in a tight red dress with lips to match. She was fond of low cut dresses, but opted for one with a halter to hide the hickie I gave her last night. “Alpha Derick and Luna Molly are expecting a child,” Mason said. I could tell from his eyes that he wasn’t pleased that she attended. Tallia gave them a bow. “Congratulations.” “You don’t have to be so formal, Doll,” Molly said, trying to ease Tallia. “Thank you. I haven’t been around other Alphas, besides Alpha.” “And you are,” Xavier asked, eyeing her. She gave him a tight lipped smile. “I’m Tallia, Alpha’s…” A part of me was worried she’d say girlfriend. Before I could stop myself I said, “Maid.” I could see her eyes widen slightly. I felt bad, but I couldn’t let the other Alpha’s know I was in a relationship with someone other than my mate. Tallia composed herself and gave the group a sly smile. “Yes. I fluff Alpha’s pillows every night and make her bed in the morning.” I gave her an incredulous look. I cleared my throat. “Let’s do another round. To the happy couple!” I hoped the distraction and liquor would stop the group from noticing the double meaning in her words. Not too long after the music for King Edward and Queen Selena’s entrance began. The crowed silenced and looked to the stage where a set of double doors opened. The King and Queen entered the room. A large silver crown with moons topped the Alpha King’s head. He had a long cloak that draped behind him. He looked regal standing there with a scepter topped with a silver moon in his right hand and jeweled rings on the other. Queen Selena had a silver headdress full of jewels hanging from it. Her off the shoulder black gown was adorned with silver sequence. She reminded me of the night sky as her dress twinkled with every movement. The king smiled at the crowed. “Hello, everyone. I hope you’re enjoying the festivities. I am honored to have you all here. Let’s take a moment to welcome the newest member of our Alpha family. Alpha of The White Sun Pack.” I wasn’t expecting to have to introduce myself to the entire crowd. I took a deep breath and smiled as I walked towards the stage. King Edward continued to talk, “I know many of you remember the late Alpha William. I am pleased to announce that his daughter continues his legacy.” I stepped up on the stage. Many members of the crowd looked surprised. They clearly didn’t hear the rumors about me. The Queen gave the crowd an encouraging smile. “Let’s all give our congratulations to Alpha Alpha, the first female pack leader of The White Sun.” The crowed roared to life. Everyone clapped their hands and I even heard a few whistles. I beamed at the fact that so many accepted a female Alpha. Alpha Edward spoke again. “Thank you everyone for attending. Please, be seated and dinner will be served.” The seating arrangements were assigned by rank. King Edward and Queen Selena were seated at the head of the table, followed by the Alphas and Lunas, then Betas, Gammas were seated next, ending with guards and others that accompanied their Alphas. Xavier was seated next to Alpha Edward, and lucky me, I was seated between him and Derick. A roast was served with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. Wine was poured in everyone’s glass. Everything smelled delicious and looked like it had come straight out of a magazine. The taste was even better. The King had a gourmet chef in his kitchen, no doubt. “Your majesty, everything tastes divine. I can’t remember the last time I ate this well,” I said to Alpha Edward. “Thank you, Alpha. It was my mother’s recipe. She would have been pleased.” I was surprised. I assumed he had a famous chef concoct the meal. I had heard Alpha Edward was a modest man, but to use a family recipe for a formal occasion such as this was beyond humble. “I like to honor her by sharing her cooking at every Summit. She was always in the kitchen cooking up something. This was always one of your Father’s favorites.” I smiled. “I’m pleased that I’m able to take after him.” “You have much of your mother’s grace as well. When you walked to the stage with your head held high, I could see your mother’s spirit in you,” Luna Selena admitted. “You both are so kind.” The rest of the meal was mostly miscellaneous chitchat. Saphir was seated next to Derick and Molly, who were giving him tips on raising pups. Daniel, Tobias, and their Lunas had small talk. Sterling joked around with a Beta I didn’t recognize. Xavier was surprisingly quiet. After dinner music was played and many danced. An occasional member from one of the other packs would greet me and introduce themselves to me. Everyone was very kind and accepting. I was speaking with Georgio and Juan, Tobias’ Beta and Gamma, when he grabbed my attention. Tobias stretched out his hand and asked, “Can I have this dance?” I turned to Luna Maria. “Do you mind?” “Not at all, Dear,” she said with a smile. With her blessing Tobias and I headed to the dance floor. “Do you know how to waltz?” I smiled at him. “I am the daughter of Luna Kaitlyn. Of course she taught me to dance,” I said receiving a laugh from Tobias. My Mother loved to dance. She always insisted it was an effective form of exercise and a good skill to have. I recalled disagreeing with her as a child, but now I was happy she had taught me. We continued dancing until the song ended. Someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned to find Daniel. “My turn.” I glanced behind him to Luna Sarah. She gave me a nod and I took his hand. It may seem old fashioned, but my mother always taught me to ask permission from a male’s mate if I wanted to dance with him. Some wolves, male and female, can be very territorial. I was told it was respectful. I know I’d be jealous if someone asked Tallia to dance without my permission. We danced for two songs, then I headed to the bar. “Need a drink,” Sterling asked, leaning against the bar. He handed me a double shot. I could tell by the smell that it was one of my favorite top shelf whiskeys. I downed it in one gulp. “Mind if I ask for a dance?” I laughed. “I didn’t realize I’d be doing this much dancing. I think I need a rest. It’s been awhile.” He grabbed my hand and pulled me to the middle of the dance floor. “Come on. It’ll be fun.” I sighed, conceding. I didn’t get to dance in a setting like this often and I felt closer to my Mother when I did. I smiled to him and placed my hand on his shoulder. Sterling had just put a hand on my waist when a roar rang through the entire ballroom. The music stopped and everyone stared at the direction it came from. I could hear footsteps pounding on the marble floor. I looked behind me and found an enraged Xavier stalking towards us. His jaw was set and his eyes appeared bloodshot. When he approached us he didn’t hesitate to rip Sterling away from me. “Dude! What the f*ck?” “You ask a lady to dance, you don’t demand it,” he yelled to Sterling. Something about his actions annoyed me. My wolf snarled. He thought I was so weak I couldn’t deny a man a dance? “Do I look like I need saving?” He turned to me in shock, then annoyance. “I’m not a Princess that needs you to come rescue me. I can protect myself. Why do you even care who I dance with?”  “Yeah, Xavier,” Sterling said, with curiosity in his eyes. “Why do you care?”
